The only thing I know is that Rake is/was the best. We all know he could have killed Dassem, by sword or warren, but threw the fight to enter Dragnipur. That is not up for discussion, it is fact. He beat an Elder God, dozens of Segulah, and countless thousands of others(evidence in dragnipur). Who can come even close except maybe Icarium or the same Elder God who thought him an upstart? Segulah, no chance. Avowed, no way. Being alive for half a million years and defeating every person that has it in for you is insane! Rake obviously does not turn away from most fights and he likes to stick his nose into others' buiness.

If it would have taken a warren to beat Dassem then Rake is not the best swordsmen. I'm slightly in the minority who think Dassem is greater than Rake at swordplay. Icarium even alludes to the opinion that Dassem was perhaps more than his equal (we all know this is in terms of swordsmenship as Dassem has few other offensive skills).

Rake is almost certainly better than Dassem, and Icarium, overall. He's just too smart and all arounded to fail - as you point out his track record against Elder Gods and other unspeakables is unassailable (plus Erikson loves him in his own way.) None of this changes my opinion on swordplay, from what I've seen I choose to believe that Dassem and Icarium are no.1 and no.2 in no particular order.

In they're fight in Darujistan Rake used Dassems strike as a way of killing himself with Dragnipur!!(is what I took out of that scene) by deflecting he's blade off of Grief and into he's own head. Thought that was why Dassem was so upset afterwards cos he knew that's what Rake did, which would mean all during they're fight Rake was just waiting for the perfect time to do so. which in my eyes would make him Superior just as Tool used the Flat of he's blade when facing the Seguleth.

Quoting this because it has a quote on Rake beating an Elder God- from near enough the start, at least MoI, I've always been convinced Draconus also threw that fight, just as Rake did with Dassem.

I've read it once, fully intended on rereading it probably several times. W9uld have reread it by now if i hadnt been so busy with years with uni and terrible at concentrating on more hands 1 complex, time consuming thing.

Definitely rereading it in prep of WiS. I very much enjoyed it.

I came to the conclusion many years ago, and also wrote it somewhere in a thread around here back then, that Kallor is the narrator trapped in his own creation. Or as it is put here, the dreamer who dreams of being a butterfly/tyrant/destroyer of worlds... but still can't or doesn't want to wake up. :)

    Edit: https://forum.malaza...ost__p__1087033

Do you mean he is the author of the Book of the Fallen? As that is Kaminsod.

Or the author of the Kharkanas trilogy? As that is Galen, narrating to Fisher, I believe.

I do agree however that there's far more to Kallor than we have been shown so far.

After the current in-progress series are finished (Witness, Kharkanas, B&KB, PtA), both authors will be done writing stories in the Malazan world.

Please, sir, may we have some more?

There's the hint about a Kallor book. Obvs either author could plan that as part of their current sets, but even so..

I've always wanted a book/s on the human First Empire and Dessimbelackis and First Heroes (someone once mentioned Steve riled this out, anyone got a link to the primary source for this by any chance please?), but hey if there's a Kallor book then maybe that thag will have stiff to do with those. Also, a Kallor dedicated book is even better anyway so fuck yeah.

Just noticed something (maybe not for the first time but I may have forgot) when reading chapter 2 of The Crippled God (started my reread of the series way back when the forum was doing a reread, it's took me this long to get there), when Ruthan Gudd has rescued Bottle, Ruthan jokes about how he never thought he'd want a dog, dur to something that happened as a child.

And remember what we learn about Arathan and the dog thag his sisters did? Could be a pretty solid, yet obscure throwaway line, connection indicating Ruthan being Arathan.

Not sure if this has been discussed before but I don't remember seeing it, however I've been away from the forum and my memory is that bollocks I may have mentioned itbefore myself.
