Its a personal line. If you can't enjoy their material without thinking about what they did (or are alleged to have done), you are probably going to boycott.

If you can separate the art from the person, you probably won't.

I just don't go in for the notion of pressure on others to boycott as if anyone who still consumed the art is compounding the alleged crime.

    Memories of Ice

Dancer's Lament if we count ICE books.

They aren't standalones anyway. Standalone is different from self contained plot. The former requires that it be read and enjoyed without having read the others (which would be a silly standard either forcing redundancy into series or only ever liking book 1's and true standalones). The latter can lean on knowledge from prior books but only evaluates the story on its own.

As the rest of the series gets shaped, the plots run into and over each book more, so plot threads run all over if self contained. But MOI and DG, even though they lead or hint other places, have strong enough central narratives with resolutions to stand alone.

But 'he just knows because he's Dujek' is not an answer. Again, this is not just another case where Erikson just leaves it up to you. This seems like an oversight.

If you want to believe it is an oversight, believe that.

Just stop prodding, because clearly anything we could tell you relies on knowledge you don't have yet.

@Nevyn I've done that in a lot of other cases, it's just that from my point of view these questions do not leave much room for satisfying explanations down the line. Of course I am going to keep reading, the world building, the plot, even the characters are extremely interesting and intriguing.

@Abyss I understand completely. But this kind of explanation does not make a lot of sense, that's what I'm saying. We have no indication and no inclination to believe that Lorn's plan was common knowledge for example. I'm not looking for exposition dumps, not at all, I want sufficient clues to figure things out myself. Dujek suddenly saying to Whiskeyjack 'You know, Lorn's in the Barrow' doesn't come from seemingly anywhere. And yes, spies could have found out, but we should have at least some slight indication.

This series will always be short on "satisfying explanations".

What you gain is greater overall understanding and occasionally new revelations that put old information in a different context.

But the point remains, they become hard things to proper discuss with people who have not read further.
