I will be pre-ordering as soon as school refund money comes in. Good to hear that the Tower of Ghenjei will be resolved in this book (though I knew it had to happen soon, it's nice to have confirmation), and probably the Black Ajah as well. :)

Tower of Ghenjei? I swear, the things I don't remember from this series could fill, um, something rather large and empty...

Still, sounds sweet.

I know exactly what you mean. I didn't like the series enough to reread it, but am planning on finishing it and am afraid I won't remember half of what's going on. Terez should write us condensed versions of each book, about 2 pages long with all important info. Hell, I bet she already has for one reason or another.

THE WHEEL OF TIME (abridged)

The Dark One wants to destroy the world.

Rand goes nuts. Mat gets lucky. Perrin falls off the couch trying to lick himself. Egwene sniffs. Elyane sniffs. Nyneave sniffs and tugs her braid. Aviendha sniffs and waves a knife around. Some other people do stuff with swords and/or magic. They win.

It is. The Tower of Ghenjei is the home of the Aelfinn and the Eelfinn. It is accessible by the two twisted redstone doorway ter'angreal. The one in the Stone of Tear's Great Holding that Rand, Mat, and Moiraine used at the same time leads to the Aelfinn (snakes), who answer three questions. The one in Rhuidean that Mat also used, the one that Moiraine and Lanfear destroyed during their battle in Cairhien (it was carried there), leads to the Eelfinn (foxes), who grant three wishes (which is where Mat got his ashandarei, his foxhead ter'angreal, his battle memories, and the scar on his neck).

The Tower itself was first seen in The Eye of the World, while Rand, Mat, and Thom were floating down the river on Domon's boat, between Shadar Logoth and Whitebridge. It was also seen in book 4 while Perrin was in the Wolf Dream (Tel'aran'rhiod), and Birgitte shared a bit of info about it then, including the connection to the game of Snakes and Foxes that Olver (the ugly kid in Mat's care) likes to play.

It's also where Moiraine is imprisoned. Mat, Thom, and Jain Farstrider have to go get her. :) And Mat is pretty sure that they will know he is coming, because he thinks they've got a string tied to his thoughts (which would explain the memories they gave him, which all start in adulthood and end not with the Tower of Ghenjei, but with death).

There was apparently a contract made when the ter'angreal doorways were made. They grant the three answers or wishes, and the visitor is not allowed to bring iron, instruments of music, or anything that makes fire. Rand managed to make them very uncomfortable by wielding his sword of fire, so it stands to reason that these will be their weapons at the Tower of Ghenjei. Also, the Eelfinn require a payment, a bargain, for the wishes they grant. Apparently the details of how this payment is determined are lost along with the original contract.

Also, the Aelfinn told Mat that he would 'give up half the light of the world to save the world', Min had a viewing that Rand's success was dependent on Moiraine's return, and she also saw an eye on a balance scale for Mat, AND Egwene had a dream that Mat was dicing with the Dark One, hat over his eyes but blood streaming down his face while Thom reached into a fire to pull out a blue stone (the stone Moiraine wears on her forehead).

So, it's been theorized that Mat will have to pay a price - his eye - to get Moiraine out, like he had to pay a price for the Eelfinn (the hanging that would have killed him had Rand not been there to resuscitate him.

good recap terez, I agree with you, of all the plot lines hanging in the air in this series, the Tower of Genghi is by far the one that's peaked my curiousity.. sure the the 11(or so) books so far could be condensed down to like 8 or so, but I still have a soft spot in my heart for these books, since at one time-like it or not- it was the best fantasy series out there. Sure it doesn't stand up to Mbotf, but honestly, what does?

I like it more than Malazan, personally. I feel like it fits together better, and the characters (despite their caricaturish traits) are more deeply developed, the world details more interlocking. And the story has a clear enough goal. I like that. The story itself might be a bit cliché (I know Malazan fans hate that), but RJ's treatment of it has been very original, IMO.

Okay, some of the people on Wotmania are being downright strange. Two fans have said that they've cancelled their Amazon preorders because the book sounds like it will have 'too much Rand' in it.

Erm, it's the Last Battle between the Shadow and the Light. Of course the Dragon Reborn is going to be front and centre in the book. WTH?

That's... that's quite possibly the most retarded thing I've ever heard a fan say.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

What!?! not wanting the Dragon Reborn to be prominent in the last books is like wanting breakfast without any bacon. Some things just shouldn't be consisted. It doesn't make any sense.

OK...2 fans are being dumb. Is that the extent of it? Hardly newsworthy. There's idiots all over. Post again when there's a minor uprising.

I totally get this. I cancelled my pre-order because it sounds like Mat doesn't spend any time under a wall.

Main question is will Sanderson keep the spankings and the low-cut bodices? J/k, looking forward to reading it as soon as it comes out.

lol, Wotmaniacs have always been weird! But yeah...too much Rand? Really? When the last several books (especially the last two) have had so little of him, you'd think they'd be as happy about that fact as I am...

And come on, Abyss...it's not like I haven't said as much before. I like Malazan. I really, really like it. But it's my second-favorite epic fantasy series...that might possibly change on re-reads, since I've only read Malazan once, but based on the discussions I've read in the book forums, I sort of doubt it.
