Which hooded character do we read about minutes later... K'rul. Also elder hence we would assume he would be of a similar size to the "elemental" edgewalker.

I'm not sure entirely what is going on in this scene, whether it is completely relevent to the story. Seams to me the real person we want to know the identity of is the final person approaching that has everyone a bit more active.

Random points:

Bar scene:

The Kruppe Krul scene does ring similar to some of Kruppe's dream visions from GotM.

And that cracks exchange was totally a code, which is interesting, because if it is a dream, Kruppe is worried about hostile intruders in his head and that's all kinds of disturbing.

kruppe's witness comment certainly seems like a Karsa link, but then again, it's just a word. Yeah. Right.

Words:

Speaking of just a word, the jade rain could just be greenish rain and the iron spears culd just be clouds. Then again, they could be Jade Giant Power and bolts of Chaos chasing the wagon.

Jumping to two of my earlier points...

The plan re Pannion Domin:

In DG, Laseen clearly states to Kalam the fake outlawing of Dujek and co was a plan she was in on. (Aside: she also states she was behind the assassination (attempt) on Dassem).

Krul:

Yes, in GotM Krul only manifests in Kruppe's dreams, but by MoI he's gotten stronger, and Keruli is a Krul manifestation in the flesh, so to speak.

Random speculation...

High Houses Life, Shadow and Death are allied against the CG. Logically Dark should be in there to, but we haven't seen Rake play nicely with anyone from that alliance, and he killed two Hounds.

If the hooded man IS Hood, and i'm not certain it is, the the carriage could be bringing another member of the alliance.

Further baseless random speculation: In DG when Duiker was killed, Baruk sent a huge carriage with some Nacht to recover his body. In RG, Menandore was apparently killed, even tho she had a deal with ST and Hood. Maybe this is a similar recovery team dropping her off post not being dead any more.

I just don't see why SE wouldn't say it was Hood if it was.....so I like the idea of the other guy being a tiste.....or even Osric or Rake....

I just don't think the other guy is Hood.

Rep 'byss. That is a great but alarming thought. Kruppe worried about his own dreams.

That leads down all sorts of rabbit trails (uh, mule trails?).

Concerning Edgewalker/ST, I wonder if Edgewalker is there to help secure the release of those 3 dragons Cot spoke with in BH. I admit that's prolly stretching the meaning of mitigate but I love theories on the edge. Cot asked them what side they would fight on if freed. If I remember correctly, the dragons said they couldn't honestly answer that question until they were free.

As a side question, does anyone else find it strange that seemingly everyone in Wu recognizes the Hounds of Shadow--even the dead priest does.

That's two places in a big, big world. Still seems weird to me. Nobody ever says as they run in a futile attempt to escape, " Wow, that's a big effin dog," or alternatively, "That's no dog..what the fuck is that?" Maybe those Marines in Pale would have said something cool if Cot had introduced Gear before they got served for dinner.

The Hounds are probably as famous as Rake and Brood. I speculate it's like this: Very few people know exactly what they are, but they have enough information to know 'em when they see 'em.

As well ... my theory as to the identity of the other mysterious character - the grey man in Kruppe's dream - is the Tyrant of Darujhistan. Erikson merely said we hadn't met this person, not that we'd never heard of him. And I strongly suspect the Tyrant's story is more complicated than "despot that was overthrown," that's likely just the revisionist narrative.

Or maybe it's another formerly hiding Elder God.

The grey man is ... Greymane.

I think its the same way that everyone would recognise cerberus the three headed dog of our hell simply from legend.

Oddly enough, it took the Malazans ages to place Rake and Brood at the start of GotM. But I put that down to a GotMism.

jumping on the bandwagon that the hooded person is not hood as it would of been stated i think its k'rul as in gotm raest when he first meets k'rul believes him to be hood.......
also since events will be taking place in darujhistan was thinking that the person in the carraige could be baruk as he's seen traveling in 1 a few times in gotm

yarr, for Baruk it be more of a carriage, as he be all high and alchemical and thee whatnot. A wagon be more the transport of a passed out Coll-type fellow when he's on his way to the Phoenix Inn with Paran. Thar be said, there be still many a-carriage in this here prologue...

isnt greymane dead? i remember reading BH, and noto boil is talking to paran about being under the tutelage of two healers (ipshank and someone?) who served under greymane. and he says something like, "they were faithful to greymane until the end." or something like that.

perhaps my memory is faulty, but i remember hearing about something happening to greymane. also, i remember someone saying when dujek dies that "the empire has lost its last great general" or something. i took that to mean something bad had happened to greymane.

never trust someone to be dead in the Malazan world unless you have actually seen them and thier soul die....twice..

Its a common theory on the thread that Greymane could be as dead as many of the old guard (which means not very)

Dassem, Nok, Urko and even QB were all believed to be dead at one time by one or more persons
