I've never worked a job that had me working for tips. I get paid in at the middle and at the end of the month, regardless of my interactions with the public. Well, almost regardless. If I went postal on someone, I would expect not to get paid again as they would have to fire me.

It would be a nervous existence, I would think, relying on strangers for payment.

In Berlin a waitress looked comically shocked and then delighted when we tried to tip her. At first she thought we were stupid and couldnt count what we owed properly, but then we explained it to her in a roundabout fashion (5 self-fancying German speakers and none of us knew the word for "tip") and her expressions were just gold.

I was probably considered extremely rude when in the US the first time many years ago, being completely ignorant of the system. Nowadays, I always try to get it right but it feels strange and I worry about it every time I'm paying the bill. In one hotel in NYC you even were supposed to tip both the waiter in their restaurant and his "captain" according to the receit. I guess I'm just not used to better restaurants.

This topic actually came up at breakfast this morning, one of my friends regailed us with a tale of eating in a posh nosh joint in belfast.
they got their billa dn it was 80 quid (can't get my pound sign to work atm) they couldnt figure it out ass it should only have been like 50ish.
Then they looked at the reciept, there was a 24 great british pounds "service charge"
I would have refuesd to pay it, if you're going to slap this on anyway, why dont you just factor it into the fucking prices on the menu. Its a disgrace, its false pricing on the menus.

I can't believe this thread has been resurrected, again. In our culture, tipping in compulsory. In your culture, bitching about tipping is compulsory. We're going to just have to agree that different things are compulsory in different cultures, and leave it at that.
