Well Brood, when the waiter/waitress makes 2.13 an hour....I can't not tip...unless IT IS AWFUL.

So, they're expected to make four times as much in tips as wages? Tis teh stupidness.

It seems such a stupid topic to argue about, since it's just entrenched traditions;)
PS. I miss Bottle:(

This is my key complaint, the employees shitty wages are not my concern, I should not be expected to make the wages up by tipping, its the employers job to pay. I hate when yank service workers complain they get "stiffed" for not getting a tip. You're getting "stiffed" by your boss because the miserable person of questionable parentage isn't paying you enough so you you're forced to live on tips. I don't know how much you earn, your living circumstances or your current debt problem, I'm not ricky lake so I have no desire to, serve me my damned food, like you're paid to.
This quote annoys me on so many levels its not even funny (unless you're into perverse humour) You can't NOT tip? of course you can, if the bitch is ignorant to you, if the food is stone cold, if you find some publics in your gravy. it brings me back to my disgust at the idea of leaving a "bad tip" to "stiff" someone whos service was sub par. WTF? if service was sub par kick them in the nuts, don't reward them for it (and yes ANY tip is a reward, why? because its not part of your set wage) A swift punch to the family production unit on either gender will set them straight, not giving them money, which will perpetuate the idea people have to tip, no matter what the service is like, which will further poor service.

Except tipping = better service.

If it's too much for you...don't go out to eat. Serve your fucking self

I won't tip if the service is bad, but it's the way our service industry works, and I don't mind at all. i think it makes your experience better. The waiter/server/bellmen is trying even harder because he wants that big tip. I'm hoping to one day be a college professor, and when I'm no longer in the service industry, I will ALWAYS reward good service.

I made well over $200 tonight.
Why in the world would I want a "proper wage"?

Seriously though, what SnS said and what I just posted sum up the relative attitudes. It's understood in each country/continent what the score is, that's why Americans in Europe are seen as rather crass and ridiculous when tipping beacuse they leave so much regardless of the service quality. I can't actually believe this thread is still going. Even better I can't believe Xander and Shinners keep coming back for more!

Me loves it
I work hard. Lazy, bad service should not be rewarded, i'll agree with that much.

Dear god,I just threw up
All over the dog
WHY?
my sister is watching the visual/ audio brain rape that is pretty woman, the douche bag room service guy just stood looking at her until richard grey since he was ten gear walked over and tipped him.
This is disgusting, my dog is going to need bathed, he hates getting bathed, it makes his hair all funny smelly and it takes an age for him to dry. Not to mention I havn't eaten carrots in weeks yet there they are, big and orange as day, staring out at me from his shaggy coat. Are carrots the new chewing gum? Do they take 7 years to leave your system? Fuck
This is the expectation that tipping culture generates that I speak of, it is horrible, vile, disgusting, and as my poor pooch discovered vomit inducing. Were I Richard Gear I would have laid a smackdown on his ass, stone cold mother fucking steve austin style, that guy was old, he would have went down at the first fake wrestling style punch delivered swiftly to his likely glass jaw.

Here in Belgium, 'tips' are included in the price, i.e., the waiters get a good wage and you end up paying for that. Personally, I do give a small tip if the service was good, especially if the waiters are students (also, chicks get more :-)) because they tend not to get paid that well, and can even get laid off if the season is going bad. But those tips are restricted to rounding up to the next integer, or to n*5 or so.
If I'm in the US or Canada, I do tip, and I guess I tip too much. Yet I'm aware of the foul wages they pay people there.

I'd be willing to guess (as in I dont really know), that the crappy wage thing came about after tips were considered the norm. When the whole minimum wage settings/amounts became government mandate, they probably decided to make the wait staff minimum wage really tiny because it was already expected that the waiter would be living off their tips.
So I doubt we rely on tips because "the wage is bad", but rather the wage is bad because we rely on tipping.

It's utterly ingrained in me to tip for almost any decent service. Just a cultural thing, I guess.

It appears that is the case, RR. I had a guy from France today tell me that Americans are lazy and that's why our country is weak.
This was right before he stiffed me and shut the door in my face.
