If you're staying in a hotel for multiple days, why would you ever want some stranger in there? I never go for the turn-down service and always hang the DND sign out.

And Macros seems to have missed the entire point of going to restaurants where actual tipping comes into play.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

No I get it, service just did not warrant it.
And the added service charge on the bill is just fucking bullshit. If you're goin to put that fee on anyway make your price listing reflect that

Hey Mac, you and I agree on something on this thread. :p

although for different reasons, I'm sure. :p For me, the whole purpose of a tipping system working is the choice involved for the customer.

And Europeans, who are used to the idea of Minimum wage, feel obligated to tip regardless. which, in turn, creates a latent feeling of hostility towards the whole concept.

American Capitalism is founded on the principle of getting people to pay (extra) for things when they don't (or shouldn't) have to.

in my opinion a tip should be given if the service is good, a better tip if the service is great. I have no problem with that, I like to do it. but if it is bad why bother? 10% is a good tip, 20% is a great tip in my opinion.

Now, Macros has said stuff like "waiters just carry the food", which is a simplistic way to look at it. If I had a 20% tip for every time I've heard kitchen staff say "I'm glad I don't have to deal with the asshole customers you deal with", I'd be a few $1000 richer...

Jackass public jerks are the enemy of service jobs everywhere, and not a particularily rare species. :)

Now this is an interesting point. After all, in general no one LIKES having to deal with other people.

Anyway, this thread is pretty interesting from my point of view. It looks like, as a whole, Europeans are simply less tolerant of laziness/bad service than Americans are, going by the responses in this thread. Which seems opposite of what is expected, considering Americans typically view Europeans as being lazy (especially the French, no offense intended). This of course doesn't represent my own views.

I live in Britain, we have a minimum wage here. I worked in retail for a while and never once got tipped, it's not the done thing to tip retail staff, so why should I tip in a hotel when they earn the same as I did

At an elegant cocktail party I asked for a glass of champagne.
"Sorry,'' said the lady behind the bar, "there's no more champagne.'' I dropped two $1 notes on the bar.

Within two minutes the girl came over and gave me a glass of champagne.

Tip or bribe?

is absolute bullshit.

2 dollars wouldn't buy you shit. A ten spot maybe. But 2 dollars give me a break.
