If i were to start a new series along the lines of Hamilton or Asher, I would probably go for Asher at this point. While Hamilton has some great ideas, I've found on more than one occasion, that the ending is something of a letdown.
I don't remember having the same feeling with Asher's work, and I really loved the Agent Cormac novels.

My difficulty with Hamilton's writing was possibly most evident with the Reality Dysfunction series, which started well, built up a great premise, and then i could see that he would run into problems wrapping things up in a satisfying manner. And so it proved. Pity, since it started SO well. His novels are impressive in scope though.

Ever since starting college this year I've had an excessive amount of freetime on my hands. As such, I've gotten into reading again, and besides a Malazan reread before TCG I figured it's time to expand my horizons.

Today I picked up:

The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss
The Belgariad, Volumes One and Two by David Eddings
Chronicles of the Black Company by Glen Cook
The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson

Stopped by Borders again today. You just can't beat their deals - 40% off coupon, which actually became 50% since I'm a Borders Rewards Plus member.

Bought The Divine Comedy (translation by John Ciardi) and The Annotated Milton Complete English Poems (bought for Paradise Lost).

I really need to stop buying books. My need-to-read list is getting ridiculously long:

The Way of Kings (about 2/3 through)
Storm Front
Chronicles of the Black Company
The Belgariad
The Name of the Wind
Return of the Crimson Guard
Two books I bought today
And like 6 Stephen King books

All that, on top of my Malazan reread which needs to get done before TCG. Blah. I wish I could just set aside a week or two and devote it solely to getting all of this stuff read.

My copy came this morning! Not sure when I'll be able to read it though - I've still got TtH to finish, followed by DoD, the Towers of Midnight will be out, follwed by Stonewielder and then TCG. As the only sland alone book there, I may have to leave Surface Detail 'til last.

Let me know your opinion of it, when your done! Also didn't you read Matter? That's only a few years old (I certainly wasn't 9 when I read it, let's put it that way) - maybe 2007.

EDIT: When you say proper Culture novel...I take it that you didn't enjoy Matter? I didn't see any problem with it - I thought it was great...please explain?

I saw (and immideately grabbed) Sanderson's Mistborn trilogy in a boxed set.
Tchaikovsky's Shadow of the Apr, Book 4 *ignores Morgoth and Aptorian*
Janny Wurts "Wars of Light and Shadow", volume 3 "Warhost of Vastmark"--I'm not sure if I like the series, yet, but I have made the error of buying volume 4 first,t ehn I bought and read volumes 1 and 2, and now, welll, I have to read 3, and then 4, since it's already in my posession.

also grabbed Ken Scholes' "Canticle", because I absolutely loved "Lamentation"

Only qustion becomes when will I ever have time to read any of these.....

I was going to grab the Mistborn boxed set, but wasn't sure how I would like the series. Answer is that I should have bought it. Just read The Well of Ascension in one day, and now have to go back out at some point to buy the final book.

Lamentation was great too, I have been meaning to buy Canticle for awhile now, but I rarely have time to read stuff that isn't for school.

bought BLOOD OF AMBROSE by James Enge on the strength of THE SINGING SPEAR short story, but I couldn't get into it. It felt a little disjointed, and overly anecdote-y.

Anyhoo, the book is "The Dwarves" by Markus Heitz. Anyone read it and if so, is it any good?

I like dwarves, I play Dwarves in Warhammer and Mordheim (I play Witch Hunters aswell, so if you know any good books with witch hunters, lemme know)
