Based on how much I've been loving Dickens' A TALE OF TWO CITIES, I picked up a copy of GREAT EXPECTATIONS and grabbed a nice hardcover of Le Guin's THE LEFT HAND OF DARKNESS today.

I didn't buy it, but Dan Brown announced a new Langdon book.

THE SECRET OF SECRETS (which is a terrible title...but apparently based on a letter from Aristotle to Alexander The Great, so at least he didn't make it up himself?)

And like the glutton for punishment I am, I'll probably read it (even though the synopsis sounds like every other Langdon book by Brown, and even though I didn't like the last two much) because I'm still chasing the DAVINCI CODE high I got as a 20-something reading that book...sigh.

Anyways, linky.

With me berfday monies, I grabbed the rest of the Fatemarked series SOULMARKED, DEATHMARKED, LIFEMARKED by Estes.

I also grabbed book one of Phillip C. Quaintrell's Echoes Saga RISE OF THE RANGER as well. Got me lots of reading to do!

I've got about a $5-er left of said birthday monies, so if anyone has any recommendations for something else to grab in or around $5, that would be loverly.

Doesn't appear to be. I saw a whole slew of people singing its praises on reddit, and decided to take a chance since it's cheapish. It certainly sounds like some fun classic-ish fantasy with a dash of epic and whatnot.

FWIW I DNF this book, I definitely wasn't feeling it.

Interesting. How far did you get? I'm rounding chapter 5 and I'm finding it a lot of fun. Or was it just an "I'm not int he mood for this particular thing right now" vibe?

There's definitely some touchstones of other Fantasy media, but I'm not too bothered by that.

Frances White's Voyage of the Damned was one of my favourite reads of last year and is on sale for what appears to be 3 dollars on Canadian Amazon (assuming we're talking ebook). Or Kobo if you don't read Amazon.

Other books I think you might enjoy that are about that:

The Mask of Mirrors by ML Brennan. A kind of Locke-Lamora-ish con story, though with a lot more focus on fashion lol. It's a little above 5 I think, but it's really good. I should get back to the sequel.

Sailor to a Siren by Zoe Sumra: full disclosure that I know Zoe Sumra a little from another forum, so I'm partly recommending it coz she's sound, but also because it's great fun, a space fantasy gang crime adventure. It's the first of a duology but they're not expensive in ebook.

Thunderer by Felix Gilman. Also slightly out of the 5 dollar range, but it's one of my favourite books of all time by an author I never thought got enough attention. Part of a duology which I really, really love.

We can, of course, never be sure of a double stamp, but all those are books I think at least tend to the direction of your tastes.
I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.
