Cibola Burn. I'm a bit disappointed it's a hardcover cause now it doesn't match the tradepaperbacks.

I saw that and am patiently waiting to see if a trade paperback version will show up eventually. I HATE when books don't match on the shelf.

I never managed to finish Blood Song. Vaelin was far too Kvothe for comfort, being the best swordsman in an Order of stellar warriors. Every bad situation was solved fairly quickly, with al Sorna coming out on top and on the high ground. And naturally he is a really honourable soul to boot. Granted, I stopped when they impregnated the impregnable fortress, and I've heard that the ending is likely to explain a few things. But I'm not sure I want to find out...

I partially agree with your sentiment. I finished the book, and found it exciting in a sort of popcorn, action movie kind of way. However, it was an incredibly predictable collection of overused fantasy tropes. Vaelin has no personality. He is the honourable super killer we encounter everywhere in the genre, and there's nothing setting him apart from any of the others, Kvothe included. He always makes the right choice. Always the honourable choice. If I were to write an essay of the use of mary sue characters in fantasy, Vaelin would be a perfect example.

Admittedly his super power is to always know what to do for maximum pay-off but if he is a mary sue he is one done right.

I will be looking forward to tower lord. Glad to pick it up hear because I almost forgot.

Could you like, spoiler this stuff guys? I mean some of it is ok but stuff like what his 'super power' is seems to be a pretty big spoiler.

It's not a spoiler. Vaelin doesn't have a super power. It was a figure of speech.

On the flipside, I'm waiting to see if the first three will be offered in a hardcover format now. I'd happily buy new copies and pass along my tpbs.

Chapters had a buy 3 get 1 free sale. I bought:

"The Age of Shiva" by James Lovegrove--I just love me some mil SF godpunk

"Arcanum" by SImon Morden-been eyeing this one for a while. It's a hefty tome, and it's like Alternative history, with magic. Alaric sacked Rome, and the Westrn Roman empire fell apart, leaving behind a whole bunch of pagan tribes with magic (Christianity didn't happen). And now magi'c going away. Seemed a nifty enough concept

"Promise of Blood" by Brian McClellan-this one seems to be "Napoleonic wars with magic", and it was endorsed by Sanderson and Brent Weeks. Seemed worth a buy. First out of a trilogy called "The Powder Mage"

and a non-fiction book in the mix: "Guns, Germs and Steel" by Jared Diamond--been meaning to get this one for a while.

Oh, and earlier this week I picked up Mark Lawrence's "Emperor of Thorns" in mmpb

Blood Song (DUN DUN DUNNNNN!!!!)

By Anthony Ryan.

Who I'm firmly convinced is the secret agent in all those terrible Tom Clancy movies. Like Hunt for Red October.

I'll let you guys know what I think, but goodreads is also suggesting 'The Thousand NAmes' by Django Wexler. Anyone read that one? Thoughts?

Blood song was ok. I mean the writing was good-ish, its absolutely an interesting take on a Muslim Civilization, but other than that it really wasn't anything new.

It is a nifty concept - just terribly executed (imho). Just average, bland fantasy stuff over a moderately interesting initial premise.
meh. Link was dead :(

Well, there's this character that's persistent in all of them, and then you need to wait for this 10 book series to finish and then another series to be written, and THEN it'll make sense. I think.

The entire 'Faith' was a muslim setup with magic. That kingdom was Arabic-based.

bit of binge shopping, sony reader store shut down and transfered its customers to Kobo, obviously welcomed myself with several books
The Grim Company
First 4 books of the Masters of Rome series
3 Gallow books (first one is called The Crimson Shield)
Valour (Gwynes second book, Malice gave me just enough to want more)
Space Revelations, not usually a sci-fi reader, but decided to try it
3rd book in the Empire series by Anthony Riches, unless theres a jump in quality this will be the last
