Oh ffs, it's a bookstore, go put your briefs back on. No book deserves to only be one thin layer of denim away from that.

This is true. More true now than before. Even with multiple Chapters Indigo stores mere blocks form my house, I still mostly order from Amazon now.

Hmm. You actually raise a good point.

Is there any other good alternatives than Amazon for those of us who want our fantasy and sci-fi in an electronic format?

I was going to mention Book Depository, but a quick Google tells me it was...spoiler: bought by Amazon.
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

So your options are
a) whine about the evil of amazon and have no books;
b. suck it up and have books;
iii. stop whining and start your own damn company to compete with amazon;
4. become a hermit.

This year I have failed to read more Alastair Reynolds (except for "Galactic North")

To make sure this won't happen next year, I took the gift card I got from my bosses and raided The Book Depository

my haul:
-"The Prefect"
-"Terminal World"
-"Blue Remembered Earth" (first of a trilo)
-"Pushing Ice"

Also, a few other things:
- Red Tide by Marc Turner- last book in the "Chronicles of the Exile" trilo
-Labyring Index by Stross- The next laundry book (in hardback, no less, because it was on sale and cheaper than paperback)

also a new recommendation: "The Last Sacrifice" by James A Moore.

Sadly this isn't actually a trilo. Turner's internet nonexistence makes me fear poor sales killed it but hopefully it was just that he'd already had the first three books prepared and has taken longer to finish book 4 than he expected, coz I was starting to enjoy the hell out of this series.
I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.

okay, yeah, that made sense. From the 1st 2 books, it didn't feel like the story could end in just one book, but it seemed that the series stopped, so I made the assumption.

so I guess "the latest book" would be a more appropriate description.

EDIT: I have successfully braved the pre-Holiday Eaton Centre rush and emerged with my prizes: 4th volumes in 2 series I'm aiming to finish soon:

"Plague of Swords" by Miles Cameron -Traitor Son Cycle
"The Widow's House" by Daniel Abraham - Dagger and Coin

Picked up the last (fifth) volumes of the 2 series I'm reading

"Fall of Dragons" by Miles Cameron - Traitor Son Cycle
"The Spider's War" by Daniel Abraham - The Dagger and The Coin

My ambitious plan is to finish both series before the end of the year.
