Surely the soletaken are on the path of hands to gain ascension:

among shapeshifters. Each stands alone. This Path of Hands...is perhaps a means to Ascendancy - for the victor [fiddler speaks] Domination of its own kind

The shapeshifters are gathering to the promise of a gate through which they can attain such Ascendancy. To become a god of the Soletaken and D'ivers - each shapeshifter seeks nothing less, and will abide no obstacle

That quote also starts the debate whether you can be soletaken with out being ascendant, or if soletaken ascendant means you are more badass than the common soletaken.
Given that Quick Ben's a Soletaken, but not an Ascendant, I'm thinking the former is quite possible. Not to mention all the Soletaken Imass who, as well, wouldn't necessarily qualify as Ascended.
As well, there seem to be varying levels to Ascendancy, not a clear-cut gradiation.

hmmm.. sorry, no quote, but I believe that he one who'd reach the end of the Path of the Hands would become a God of all Soletaken and D'ivers....
also, back on track: i like to think of the old couple as some of the EGS who we see in the back of the books but know nothing else about....

I took the couple to be ancient lake spirits who had been hanging around for ages. To be honest, i thought they were funnier as a joke in MT than as a suddenly revealed minor power/plot device in RG.
And also, there are many different meanings for 'ascendent' and 'ascension'... there is NO. Hard. Fast. Rule. All you really need to know is that it means someone becoming more than they were before.

Here's a quote... Fid talking to the Tanno Spiritwalker in DG:
Quote
"A gate. The prophecy of the Path of Hands. Soletaken and D'ivers. A gate promising… something. They are drawn as moths to a flame."
"Why would shapeshifters have any interest in a warren's gate? They are hardly a brotherhood, nor are they users of sorcery, at least not in any sophisticated sense."
(snip)
Tanno Spiritwalker: "I have no answers to your questions, indeed, I do not think even the Soletaken and D'ivers are fully aware of what they seek. Like salmon returning to the waters where they were born, they act on instinct, a visceral yearning and a promise only sensed... There is no unification among shapeshifters. Each stands alone. This Path of Hands... is perhaps a means to Ascendancy—for the victor."
Fiddler drew a slow, unsteady breath. "Ascendancy means power. Power means control." He met the Spiritwalker's tawny eyes. "Should one shapeshifter attain Ascendancy..."
"'Domination of its own kind, yes. Such an event would have… repercussions..."

They are drunk and obviously in control of the situation...nuff said. Oh, and they also don't seem to have a problem sharing said drink, I'd invite them to a party any time.

They weren't drunk. They were just acting that way. As soon as Bry's and the other guy left they sobered right up.
How many fucking people do I have to hammer in order to get that across.

Ok so here are some quotes
pg 863 RG "'Imagine,' Pinosel said with a gusty sigh, 'a name in the old tongue. Oh now, ain't this one come a long way!'
'You stopped being drunk now, munch-sweets?'
She stirred, clambered onto her feet, then reached down and tugged at her husband. 'Come on.'
'But we got to wait - to use the name and send it away!'
'We got time. Let's perch ourselves down top of Wormface Alley, have another jug, an' we can watch the Edur crawl up t'us like the Turtle of the Abyss.'
Ursto snorted. 'Funny how that myth didn't last.'"
So that proves that they were just playing at being drunk. Probably because Drunk people aren't seen as being a threat.

Haha hence how Triban Gnoll was born, with his not-really-Elder-God father... And L'Oric, whose mother is hinted at as being arrogant and powerful in HoC.
And also Nimander, who is, I believe Rake and Envy's... A little eww tho...
Grr Mael being off-limits. I want to see some Sea-Hellians or some such!

If I recall correctly, in the previous book they considered the pros and cons of getting married....they HAD to be drunk.

Possibly Mael's servants?
