It would be logical for Paran to be an ascendant, it's just not been said outright. As I said above I think he's more than an ascendant or perhaps outside that system.

Then again, it would seem he can make people ascend just by sneezing, so if he wants to be one, he is one.

Your wINEPTITUDE asside, (abyss wins, duh!), the one that controlls ascendents is much more than one.

So if he can shuffle the positions in the deck around, ascendency is a moot point for him.

-Shurq also notes that if he is the system as Jen'isand Rul suggests then he is more like K'rul...

@ Apt: which version you have?
I have the MMPB, with the assassin with two blades on the cover. The font is different in it, b/c it's the first of the new-style books...
It's in Chapter 8, following the biting of Bonehunters, Hellian's plotting and the heavies' philosophical musings..

More like he's the caretaker or the janitor. He keeps the tenents in the building happy or evicts them when they step over the line. He keeps the magic flowing in the pipes and repairs any situations that arise.

Ok in the old version, with kalam on it, it's page 339.

I see what you're getting at but Ganaths words make me doubt her own knowledge. I would think she could sense magic but it doesn't seem like it.

She calls him a god because of what he does. She says:

Quote

"You're a strange god. Riding a miserable creature that dreams of killing you. Building a fire with which to cook food. Tell me, in this new world, are all gods such as you?"

Paran explains there's a deck now instead of tiles and he's the master of them. They talk about the Errant and worship. to which this conversation belongs:

Quote

[Paran]"No-one worships me, Ganath."
"They will. You are newly ascended. Even in this world of yours, I am certain that there is no shortage of followers, of those who are desperate to believe."

She thinks Paran is ascended because the Errant was. It's not specified that a Master is an ascendanat just that the Errant was. And who knows where the Errant came from before he became the master.

I think he's more like a policeman. Judge Dredd, maybe.

Everyone is against me... I'm gonna stick to my belief that he's not technically an ascendant.

... and yet, Hetan is one of the sacred ones, the keepers of the secret scrolls.

Im just confused as to why we're debating this...it's stated in the books he is one, events clearly show he is one...I AM TELLING YOU HE IS ONE...though my word apparently carries little weight in this place lol, but you really should believe me when it comes to my namesake gosh...

I thought his self-acknowledged immunity to the Seven Cities plague was the point when we were supposed to stop and say "Oh, he's an ascendant now". He was travelling with Apsalar at the time, and she said much the same.

But I thought that was the point where he said he didn't know what ascendancy meant?

My God, Why doesn't Paran just ask ST and Cot who seem to have figured out what ascension is quite a long time ago.

Paran is ascended that much is clear.

While I think that's correct, I also think he resists acknowledging it -- almost as if he remains above the fray if he considers himself something other than...

I suppose it's the same as when he refused to acknowledge he was Master of the Deck for so long.

So paran has ascended via a different path than others (quest xp, rather than combat xp, ;)) so he displays different characteristics of ascendancy. although disease resistance seems to be a universal trait, so it's pretty clear he's ascended.

Think of it this way.
The Errant is Master of the Holds and he is an Ascendant and a God
Paran is Master of the Deck and definately an ascendant. The only reason he isn't a God is a lack of worshippers.

The point is, Apt's being stubborn and refuses to admit defeat.

Could we see something Gem and LHTEC (me included) would dread--an alliance b/w Paran and the Errant against the FA?

I highly doubt it. Because the errant is such a douche bag and because he's too arrogant. And because Paran is smarter than that. Really. And the FA wouldn't be against Paran. That's just bull.

Other than that, I trust Folken's insight in this. He's done everything but write his inside knowledge about Paran on our noses. Sheesh. ;)

Anyway, if it came to an outright war, Ganoes could take the FA. Think about it, he has people like Rake, Brood, Quickben, Tays, the surviving Bridgeburners, Onearm's host and his deck of cards...

Not to mention the fact that in a one on one fight, the hound would probably take over.

There's so many things you're not taking into consideration here.

First, we don't actually know much about the FA's MO. How many are there, what are they capable of doing in a group, can they outright kill Parans abilities with their magic rebuff talent?

Second, Paran does definently not have Rake or Brood on his side. They are ascendants with their own agendas, currently I don't think they are interested in angering a warren of FA if such a thing still is out there. Human beings are like walking practice dummies made out of meat for an FA. Tay and QB could probably fair well against a FA, perhaps, if the FA magic block doesn't make them useless aswell.

Third, he doesn't control that hound, and against a powerfull FA would a hound of shadow even survive?

Then again knowing Erikson, Paran would probably just free Killy and Scabby and ten other terrible creatures just to kill one FA. Because releasing the Deragoth certainly wasn't overkill.

Also Paran is not an Ascendant, talk to the hand cause the face wont... uhm, look. :hand:
