Fiddler, Quick Ben, Mallet, Picker, Blend, etc are alive and none ascended... as far as we know.

Or is it? Paran is definitely playing at the grown-ups table now. For all the awesomeness Rake commands, it is Paran who has the position of MoTD.

Paran's power is a different brand - it isn't the "I will kick your ass all over the ballpark" kind. Paran is the one who enforces rule, works toward balance, sanctions the HoC, etc. He is the ultimate peacekeeper.

I'd say comparing Rake to Paran is like comparing Hitler to the ideal Secretary General of the UN (in an ideal world, the UN would have some balls)!

I was getting at the power scales...ie rake is waaay more powerful than paran.

But you're right, paran has his own thing going on. I wonder if he can just make a "rake card" and snuff it out like he did with the bear-shark-scaly thing and the bussards.

Strongly implied yes.

Proof he is an ascendant? No.

Perhaps the deck does not want the mortal it selected as 'master' to die from a severe cold. Does that them make him an ascendant? What, really, does being an ascendant entail?

More personal power, right? Does Ganoes have personal power, or are his powers granted him through the deck, meaning that he is possibly not ascended, he just has a really cool gadget at his beck and call?

A quote fom tbH, pg 309, MMPB of the new style covers.

Apsalar- "Paran"
Paran- "Yes?"
A: Are you now ascended?"
P: I don't know. Nothing feels different. I admit I'm not even sure what ascendancy means."
A: It means you're harder to kill"

And he's untouched by the plague, as is Apsalar. AND, Ganath said he's newly ascended... what more proof do you need?

Quote the rest of their conversation. Dosen't she mention that being ascended comes with a measure of personal power? My point is, is his power 'personal' or is it 'loaned' to him by his association with the deck?

Also, Ganath got hacked to death by Angry KC-Somethings. She obviously was incredibly observant.

Quite frankly, I'm too lazy to quote the entire paragraph, although, yes, she does talk about "power of personal nature", Which, I believe can be interrpreted in htis case as a blood of a certain warren-aspected canine, that's enough to fool the Throne of Elder Shadow, for a while...
As for Ganath--she was also old enough to know stuff. (Althogh the KC were older still), and I choose to trust her interpretation of things...

CV: The bear-shark-scaly-thing was just sent to Wu, where Karsa chased it off. That's right, Karsa is stronger in a battle than Ganoes!

But I disagree that it is the blood of said canine flowing in his veins, he needs power, whether immunity, or physical, or mental. Which it seems he has. The point I am getting at is the question, is that HIS power, or is it 'loaned' to him.

Also, you choose to trust her judgement of a situation, when it is proven later, that her judgement is lacking. IE, when she thought she had time to rework the binding.

Well, I dunno what provides the immunity, but Im fairly certain that being able to veer into an Ascended beast provides him with the physical power..

It's mentioned before that Rake passed opportunity to be a god on several occasions. Now, Rake already is aligned to High House Dark.
paran on the other hand is neutral. Could he...I wonder become the God of Reluctance..? :)

And when he gets angry in tBH his gaze is described to flare as a beast's. Also, Poliel calls him "a Soletaken"....

Umm. No.

It happens in MoI.

I do not recall him turning into a beast in GotM.

Quote

Deep within him he heard a sound, repeating again and again, growing louder. A howl. The chill of his blood that had seamlessly filled every part of his body began to break apart. Flashes of heat, bestial and defiant, ripped through the cold. He threw back his head, the howling reaching his throat. As it broke loose, the Finnest staggered back.
Blood of a Hound! Blood no one can enslave—Paran launched himself at the Finnest. His muscles filled with pain as overwhelming strength flowed into them. You dare! He struck the creature, driving it to the ground, battering its oak flesh with his fists, sinking his teeth into the bark of its face. The Finnest tried to push him away, and failed. It screamed, flailing its limbs. Paran began ripping it methodically to pieces.
A hand closed on the collar of his cloak, pulled him from the tattered body. Frenzied, Paran tried to twist round, to rend the creature holding him. The T'lan Imass shook him. 'Cease!'
The captain blinked.
'Cease! You cannot destroy the Finnest. But you have held it. Long enough. The Azath will take it now. Do you understand?'
Paran sagged, the fires within him ebbing. Glancing down at the Finnest, he saw roots and fibrous tendrils rising from the wet earth to wrap themselves around the battered apparition and begin to pull their captive down into the cloying mud. In a moment, the Finnest was gone.

Here it is.

It's just a theory, of course. He was wrong about who killed the Edur discovered in MoI, after all, and I strongly suspect we shouldn't take his intuitive knowledge for granted, at least not what we read in MoI. He seems to have a better grasp on things - especially in understanding his own limitations - in BH.

Wrong. Poliel says he is Soletaken. Paran has to correct her.
