I just thought it was the Crippled God because he was once an alien god, and he was in so much pain it was like waaaay too much for Itkovian to handle...
I also thought of CG when I reread that part awhile ago, in part because he was active in that area and in part because the CG's nature is ambiguous -- he's more than simply evil. My recollection, however, is that whoever it was withdrew hastily because it sensed Itkovian's power and feared him, rather than it being too much for Itkovian to handle.

It never occurred to me that it could be the CG. I must reread. But then, I don't think it really is the CG. Convince me?

Always a fave subject,this...
GotM: Raest's whole march to Darujhistan, esp the description of the five dragons banking in like military precision to attack him.
DG: Vathar crossing. The butterflies, the sappers, Sorno's death, the butterflies, the refugees rushing the archers in the forest, the butterflies... gets me every time, and that book had a LOT of brilliant drama moments.
MoI: Again, too many to list, but the second hand description of Gruntle rallying the defenders with a half-eaten child's body REALLY gets me. Moon's Spawn rising out of the frozen waterfall is close tho'.
HoC: A bit lighter on the drama, this book, but Darist and Cutter facing the Edur, culminating in the craziness where Cutter calls Blind and you think holy fnck the Hound is gonna kick ass and she wimps out hard, i really enjoy reading that part.
MT: Rhulad v Brys and the aftermath.
TB: The entire confrontation with Icarium, but expecially Trull's stand.
RG: Again, lots, but 'Fucking dragon.' always comes to mind.
NoK:
- Abyss, all about the drama.

Now I'm really unsure. Best you reread it yourself and make up your own mind.
MOI, page 706, bantam paperback.
Still a great bit though. Itkovian makes for good reading

Well there is def. so many that stick out for me. And usually for me its has to do with a Battle or a stand someone makes(i.e. Trull v. Iccy at the throne). But one that is sticking out to me right now as i re-read the series is towards the end of HoC. QB and Kalam just finished watching Karsa kill the 2 hounds of Darkness. They stood watching the shadows flee the carcass, they Kalam rolls his shoulders, and they approach the hounds.
Kalam: "Wizard..."
QB:"Aye?"
Kalam:"Lets drop off the Napan and get out of here."
QB:"A brilliant plan."
Kalam:"I just thought it up."
QB:"I like it very much. Well done, Kalam."
Kalam:"Like i've always told you, Quick, I ain't just a pretty face."
I dunno, that just gave me the chills a lil...i love the realationships of these people and their history, and the dark sense of humor in the face of so much crap.

Moon spawn rising from the waters! Oh man...I loved that part. Such a cool mental picture. It would make a ridiculously cool drawing for the fantasy art section.

Coltaines death in DHG.
Apsalar drinking herself into a near comma.
Apsalar chopping through the claw to get to Pearl.
The entire last sequence of MoI.
Khalam getting help from Cottilion against the shadow wraiths, and his reaction to the god's skill.

in addition to most of those already mentioned, i'd add the epilogue in DG, where the Wickan woman is heading out to the plains to abort her baby, and the midwife stops her from drinking the poison.
the whole thing is written so well that i can just picture the entire scene in my head, with the approaching crows blacking out the sky to finish the book. Its a great coda.

There are many, many awesomes moments throughout the series. Sometimes whole sections of the books feel likeo ne big awesome moment. The one which still gives me goosebumbs though if when Coltaine turns to face the arrow coming for him in DG.
Flying Monkeys definitely win.

Off the top of my head i dont know if these are the 'best' ones but for the moment.
Not Iktovian dying, but the scene where the guy wants to return the helm and there is a line up of everyone standing behind him wanting to offer something to the memorial pile. Brings tears to my eyes just thinking about it. The whole end of MOI was so devastating but until then you didnt get a chance to let it sink in.
I agree with the whole Gruntle Capustan defence starting with the troop rally.
Onos vs the 2nd Seguleh to challenge him. Something like, "you didnt kill him did you?" Well, it wasnt easy but i managed to only break his wrists using the flat of my blade. The point i love is Moks reaction to that.
The moment Mael was trapped by the errant. I thought that was wonderfully plot changing, though in the end he just gets out so easy. That part was crappy.
Trying to think of more...

As mentioned several times, WJ dead was just stunning, and very well written. I actually got tears in my eyes.
But there is so many good moments in the series, its crazy.
I think one of the best wasn't really that dramatic, yet it really struck me deep. It was when apsalar and icarium were talking in deadhouse gates, when everybody else was asleep.
"Aye, Icarium. Such are memories in full flood. We are not simple creatures. You dream that with memories will come knowledge, and from knowledge, understanding. But for every answer you find, a thousand new questions arise. All that we were led us to where we are, but tells us little of where we are going. Memories are a weight you can never shrug off.
A stubborn tone was evident as Icarium muttered, 'A burden I would accept nonetheless'
'Let me offer some advice. Do not say that to Mappo, unless you wish to further break his heart.'
The Trell's blood was a thunder coursing thought him, his chest aching with a breath held overlong.
'I do not understand,' Icarium said quietly after a time, 'but I would never do that, lass.'
Mappo let the air loose, slowly, struggling to control himself. He felt tears run crooked tracks from the corners of his eyes.
'I do not understand.. This time, the words were a whisper.
'Yet you wish to.'
There was no reply to that. A minute passed, then there came to Mappo sounds of movement. 'Here, Icarium,' Assalar said, 'drythose eyes. Jhag never weep.'
BRILLIANT!

Fiddler playing away a song for the fallen while Kalam and T'amber sacrifice themselves for Tavore. When reading I was hearing the music while they cut there way through the Claw. That was a pretty powerful.

Tehol's near death experience, with Mael arriving just in time.

The death of Itkovian, that scene just about moved me to tears,
"I was the shield anvil, and now, I am done..."

Ganoes Paran and the entire Poliel death scene sequence. Right from him calling out the 'good gods' for standing by idly, up to him making demands of Soliel.

People have mentioned Mael's being trapped several times, but for me when he gives his millenia of semi-seclusion to help Tehol was pretty memorable.
Maybe it was just WJ's death, but when Tayschrenn unloads despite all the warren issues to help Korlat(I think) was very impressive, especially when her reaction was to feel sympathy for Rake facing it on his own at Pale.
Ok, there are far far too many, but another that I find really memorable is Lady Envy's misinterpretation of the soldier's words when they are assaulting the PD.
Damn.... and the scene a few posts back of the banter between QB and Kalam really seems to standout as a symbol for so much of awesomeness in this series.
