I understand the team aspect of MMA and times fighters don't want to fight each other when they are in the same camp but it's pretty much impossible to avoid it when you have top contenders in the same camp. If Rashad finally moves down MW will he not fight Marquardt if it means a title fight there? I understand it may suck but either way you want to have the chance to win the title or you want keep the training camp happy. If you want to keep the camp happy then don't complain if you can't fight for a title. Koscheck and Fitch should fight at WW at some point too as it's a great match-up and one that would be good for the division.

I think Rashad would be good as a middle weigh. He is kind of a small light heavy anyway...

I love the facebook fights addition. 5 fights before the fight night, all free..... 3-5 of the facebook fights were badass, especially the one with michael mcdonald. It's sad that I sit there by myself watching the prelims every time when we could easily hook the computer up to the bigscreen, but my dumb friends only care about the PPV....

Holy shit, the korean Zombie pulled off the fucking twister..... I've watched thousands of fights, never seen that as a finish. Awesome.. pissed me off that I was watching the fights with a bunch of drunk idiots, yelling across the room at each other and not even watching the fights. i was/am drunj as fuck too, but watched them intently... and nobody knew what was happening, even as i was explaning it to them...

I'm not pitching in money for the next few PPVs...

/end drunken rant

and yeah, Rashad should be a damn good MW!

I had the school formal on Friday night and my girlfriend met my mother during a seven or eight person dinner I hosted. The dinner finished in time for me to catch the actual FN event on Spike, but I missed out on the Fbook fights. Damnit. Really wanted to see that McDonald fight and the Figueroa one too.

The move has been used at least four or five times in MMA, but I think none on a stage as big and bright as this one. It's kind of hard to pull off actually, since most people go for the orthodox back take instead of the twister position. (Disclaimer: Bravo did not invent the twister. Credit should be given to him for innovating some positions to enter into it, strengthening the conceptualization of it as a good to great position to have, rather than a transition point and for convincing Joe Rogan to train with him and therefore spread the BJJ word - even if through Bravo's terminology - over the airwaves).

Chill out. Maybe swap out a few of the worst offenders for different people and the vibes will change.

I'm definitely getting the GSP-Shields PPV. That's going to be a great fight.

I think he's better off at 205. More money to be made there for a fighter, and Okami, Sonnen and Silva might beat him pretty good.

edit...whoops, Mal here :p

Sooo...no discussion about tomorrow's fight's!

Being on holiday, I've been obsessively watching anything and everything related to this historic event - 55 000 people! and in Canada :p

So I'll start with the last undercard fight - Nate Diaz vs. Rory MacDonald

I'll be fiercely rooting for Rory but I think Nate will be too much for him. If that trademark Diaz thuggery is going to unsettle anybody, it's a young guy like Rory trying to prove himself. Given his move to Montreal, training with the crew at Tri-Star I'm hoping he can hold his composure and outwork Diaz and avoid the submission but I wouldn't bet on it. Diaz-submission via triangle, 3rd round possibly 2nd

Brilz vs. Matyushenko

was really impressed with Brilz in the Nogueira fight, thought he won it and he took the controversial loss well, perhaps too well (although that was a very cool crucifix by Nogueira, don't think it was enough to win the fight). I think they might be trying to build Brilz a bit here and he should dominate Matyushenko - for me Brilz is a younger better version of the Janitor. Brilz by 2nd round TKO.

Jose Aldo vs. Mark Hominick

Hominick's a very good striker, decent on the ground, but I think Aldo will just be too much for him and I don't think it's going to be competitive. Some guys are special, everything seems to come easy to them and Aldo is one of those guys. Aldo by whatever he wants, feeling out period in the first, finish in the 2nd, is my prediction. Might be time for Aldo to show his ground game - hurt him on the feet then submit him via a choke of some kind.

Ben Henderson vs. Mark Bocek

While Bocek has a chance to submit 'Bendo', don't think it's gonna happen. I see Henderson keeping it on the feet for the most part, avoiding dangerous positions on the ground and winning a decision.

Randy Couture vs. Lyoto Machida

This is Couture's last major masochistic impulse I'm thinking. the chances of him beating Machida are somewhere between slim and none, imo. IF he can hold him against the cage, use his dirty boxing, dump him on his head ala Gonzaga...yeah maybe, otherwise no chance in hell, he's gonna get tagged, dropped and TKO'd imo, 2nd round.

GSP vs. Jake Shields

Jake Shields could get a submission, no question, but that's his only way to win aside from a decision which I think its a lot less likely as GSP has always had better conditioning and Shields has been known to gas badly. If it goes to the later rounds GSP will have a distinct advantage and won't make the tactical mistakes that Kampmann did.

From what I have seen, Jake is AWESOME in transitions - he can start in a bad position on the ground and immediately, even while completely gassed, achieve a dominant position. If he can do this with GSP, more power to him and that is how he can win. His takedowns, while they have been working for him, seem so telegraphed and clumsy and GSP has demonstrably incredible takedown defense so I see him struggling to take GSP down and taking a lot of punishment in his attempts. Thing about GSP is, he takes guys out of their gameplan almost immediately and they seem to go into survival mode and forget about their strengths. Jake won't do that, hopefully anyway, everybody knows he has to get it to the ground so he has to keep on trying no matter how many times GSP stuffs his attempts.

Let's say Jake gets the fight to the ground and achieves a dominant position, he has to get a submission - I consider the likelihood of a TKO very slim. This is the million-dollar question, literally...If Jake gets on top of Georges, will he be able to finish it? For me, this is the only place the fight gets dangerous for GSP and again, everybody knows this. I don't think Jake could pull of a submission from his back with Georges' awareness and explosiveness. I see GSP standing up, forcing Jake back to the standup and I'm interested to see if he can explode and get out from under Jake - I think he can but if he can't it's going to be rough. I actually think one or maybe two rounds might end with Jake on top but every round starts standing and we've never seen GSP gassed so I'm calling 4th round TKO for GSP, like many are admittedly. Wouldn't be shocked by an earlier finish if Jake can't find any success getting GSP to the ground.

Canada loves MMA. Per capita, probably more so than the US does. I respect their fistic fandom for sure.

Ben Henderson vs. Mark Bocek

While Bocek has a chance to submit 'Bendo', don't think it's gonna happen. I see Henderson keeping it on the feet for the most part, avoiding dangerous positions on the ground and winning a decision.

Henderson was in submission trouble against Pettis and Cerrone, both of whom are not as sharp, skilled or dominant a jiu jitsu player as Bocek said. You and I talked briefly about this, but I'll explain why it matters. People can hang out in submissions that aren't exactly right for a while. Cerrone has a habit of not quite executing techniques correctly and it's come back to bite him in the ass a few times. Pettis is too young ground-game-wise to really have developed good finishing habits. Bocek can and will finish the guillotines he latches onto or the kimuras.

Tangent: A friend of mine said he recently rewatched Miller/Bocek and scored it 29-29. Bocek's gotten better since then (and so has Miller too). That rematch will probably happen down the line and will be fun to watch.

Thing about GSP is, he takes guys out of their gameplan almost immediately and they seem to go into survival mode and forget about their strengths.

Jake's survival mode is to basically pull a Coleman by latching on and then improvising his way to a dominant position. It's one of the uncanniest things I've seen in MMA. Against Henderson, he did it a couple times in enormously impressive style.

It's too bad that his G'n'P is not good. He just can't punch people. Maybe his elbows are better...

I predict Shields wins 2 rounds.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

I saw a tiny clip of "the kick" from the Machida-Couture fight. Very impressive, and it will be interesting now to see how much more Steven Seagal's ego will inflate, since apparently he got a shout out for teaching it. After hearing his mad self-important ramblings after the Anderson Silva fight i think his head will explode this time.
But, like the Silva kick this was a beauty. While Silva's was a quick front kick, this one was a jumping front kick (similar to the Crane Kick from the karate kid, though not as exaggerated in form).

I'll be interested to see if this becomes a new trend for the kickers, and how quickly you'll see an obvious counter to it. Can the MMA guys on the boards here explain why it suddenly seems to have popped up in 2 high profile fights. Do you think it is just a fluke, 2 happening so close together? I've always wondered why it hasn't been used more in the past, as it does seem to be a good method to get inside a guard that is looking to stop a potential takedown, rather than a pure muay thai defense?

OR does trying this kick against a fast opponent leave you open to a bad takedown?

Can't say i have much of a clue about the subtleties of MMA to be honest (like how to execute a takedown or defend one) as i'm an aikido guy, and i just like to either deflect the strike and/or get out of the way, and then run.

My two cents:

Lyoto and Anderson are connected to the point where techniques are shared between the two. That front snap kick is something both have worked on for years - before Segal entered the scene. I've seen Anderson do a front push kick to the face and sort of a snappish kick in several fights previously and I honestly think that it was luck that he knocked out Belfort like that and Machida knocked out Couture like that. It wasn't luck that the blows landed, as they practiced it many times, but it was luck that turned out the lights in Belfort and Couture. Seagal may have something to do with it, but I've heard rumors that he pays Anderson and Machida to let him hang, rather than they to him. Not sure of his actual coaching ability at all. It is kinda cool to have Steven Seagal chill with you at fights though. All those old movies and rep helps put you in a good mood.

The key to turning someone's lights out is to strike a sharp, decisive blow that they don't see coming. I believe that the unexpectedness of the blows was the primary factor in them being knockout kicks. I still think Cain knocked out Lesnar because one of his punches hit Lesnar's chin juuuuust right, while Lesnar wasn't paying attention. That's what caused the loop de loop to me and the subsequent knockout.

As for the snap kick being used as a re-counter to an opponent countering a takedown, I don't think so. Belfort had nothing to fear from Anderson on the ground, as Vitor is better than Anderson in every phase of grappling. Couture wasn't worried about Machida trying to take him down. He was worried about the straight left, as evidenced by his jerking around to avoid that specific punch after attacking. Vitor believed that snap kick was coming towards his belly and leaned forwards to create space. Couture had no idea it was coming in at all.

I think it works better as a distance closing strike, which is how Jon Jones uses it (see Hamill fight, Bader fight and Shogun fight), and to those who have managed to get enough velocity and exquisite placement to it, it serves as a viable knock-out blow.

This was the best card I can remember for a while. Five knockouts, two submissions and I think four decisions. Just a crazy card.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

Crazy. Thought SS was delusional the first time with Anderson, but this is actually pretty interesting:

http://youtu.be/-rAWIqRbda4

The flying triangle was nice. And GSP gets too little respect, fighting 3 rounds against a top opponent with a damaged eye.

So.

Two Saints put on a boxing match, Nunes ran out of gas against Florian, Maia/Munoz should have been a squeaker 29-28 for Maia or a draw and Einemo has nothing to offer anyone.

That KO was super sweet and I am honestly shocked Tito actually won his first fight in over 4 years since beating Ken freaking Shamrock. Bader's overrated but I still thought he'd beat and retire Ortiz.

I honestly hated seeing Wand get matched up with Leben as his style was terrible for a guy like Leben at this stage of his career. Wand will take a punch to give one and his chin is gone and Leben just destroyed him. Sad to see and hate to say it but Wand needs to retire.

Holy shitballs. Tito actually won? Makes me want to start following the sport again (not that I support Tito, just really surprised). Hate looking at the fight cards and only recognizing a few of the older faces.
