I'm not saying he's got no skill, but I've heard it said he's still the top in the world. Nick Diaz worked him over, which should refute that at least a little bit. He's a good fighter, but not the best in th world. That's all I'm saying.

So who's watching some WEC tonight? Free mma on cablee tv, gotta love that. The last WEC show was quite good.

I would agree he can't be ranked #1 right now. I'm not sure who can though... maybe Calvancante? I do think Gomi has the ability to be ranked at #1 soon, but he's got to fight some combination of Hansen, Aoki, Calvancante, Kawajiri, or maybe Shaolin first.

I don't put a lot on his loss to Diaz. He was really slow in that fight, and even then, it was a war prior to Gomi gassing.

True, but it was a war Gomi was losing, imo. Honestly I haven't seen a lot of Gomi's fights though, could have been an off night for him.

Two (2) tickets to the UFC 87 event on Saturday at the Target Center.

The face value: $402.00 per ticket or $804.00.

The seats are in the lower level, Section 129, Row Q, Seats 13 and 14.
Monster Hunter World Iceborne: It's like hunting monsters, but on crack, but the monsters are also on crack.

If I was Dana White, I would crate up Lesnar and send him to 10th Planet or some BJJ camp for the remainder of his career. Right now. Chop chop.

That fight was so solidly awful that people in the bar were giving me weird looks for cussing so loudly and repeatedly. Lesnar had about 10,000 opportunities to take the back and then RNC Herring, but didn't because he has not even the slightest glimpse of what to do on the ground - other than hammer fist the other guy's head.

Fitch is a warrior, but GSP absolutely dominated that. Who's left at 170?

I was rooting solidly for Huerta, but he just got outfought on pretty much all levels. He does have a solid chin and he's young. Florian did a nice job.

Manny's face after the stoppage had me feeling bad. Maia/McDonald was a war; neither guy slowed down, although it seemed like they got mount way too easily.

Kongo, also needs to be shipped off to a BJJ camp.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

That would have been sweet. I didn't even get to see the fights this time. Never been live.

UFC 87 was on Setanta Sports last night in the UK, good fights I thought, it was a rare occasion where I enjoyed all the fights. Even the big dumbass Lesnar, at least he was agressive and is making a real effort.

GSP vs Penn, what do you guys think?

Pressumably they'd have to fight at Welter weight and Penn will just get fat and lose. Unless they have a special at like 160-65 then I think it's pointless.

IT's at welter. If Penn wins he'll hold two belts. I think he can do it, he should have beat him last time.

I reckon Penn will turn up fat as fuck using the weight class as an excuse to walk around 10lb over his fighting weight, he is a big man for a lightweight so that isn't an issue but they rarely carry their punches up a class, although he's fought there before. It's really the only match left for GSP though.

I'm not into BJ (oh er missus!) I hate the fact that he talks like a cross between Hank Hills vietnamese neighbour Con and Screech.

There's another great fight for GSP - Anderson Silva.

I will be at the Pan Ams (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) tournament in New York City next weekend (October 4th) to watch several guys from my gym and a friend from Boston compete. Unfortunately, I am nowhere near competition-level and will be sitting this one out.

Afterward, I'll be at a party thrown by two good college friends at Home in Chelsea. If any of you are there, let me know.

Last week I played rugby with a guy who has been training for 18 months in MMA (some kind of Karate discipline he told me in the showers later) and he was a cardio-machine I have newfound respect for these guys.

Of course it has the potential to be a truly great fight. Last time was inconclusive at best. A lot of people thought BJ won, though I am not among these. Not making excuses, but GSP got eye-poked in the first round, talked about seeing 3 BJ's and not always swinging at the real one and I believe him so it's no surprise that he took him down and played the safe game after that. The simple fact is that BJ was not able to prevent GSP from holding him down. They're both improved, BJ is refocussed, but I think GSP has improved more. I think Fitch's post-fight comments are telling - he was supposed to be the workhorse that would come in and grind GSP down, work ethic over natural gifts, but he said GSP has a strength and quickness in his hips that cannot be trained, basically admitting the guy has superior genetics. I don't think Penn will be able to defend the takedown effectively and GSP finishes via ground and pound TKO or unanimous decision. I love watching BJ fight but he belongs at lightweight, imo. I think he'll get mauled, tbh. GSP has made his last few opponents look like awkward children - he hurled Matt Hughes around like a toy - that trip, going immediately into side control, was awesome. I think GSP is just too strong and explosive for BJ, barring a lucky punch or awesome sub. I see GSP taking BJ down at will and pulling out of any sub attempts. Also, i think people continue to underestimate GSP's striking because of Serra's lucky punch and GSP learning how to wrestle in record time, becoming the best functional wrestler in MMA by many people's estimation. THAT is athleticism folks. Wrestling is nothing in Canada so he had zero background in it and now he's schooling 'decorated' wrestlers left and right at their own game :D I was pleased he stood with Fitch a bit, as it was getting to be a bit of a worry. Sure, BJ made his face look like hamburger last time, but I think it will be different this time :p I'm not going to say it was all due to the eyepoke, but I think it was certainly a factor. Anybody know their respective reach?

GSP's a scary athlete for sure. Big fan of BJ's cool (/lazy) technical style. Makes for an interesting fight anyway you look at it. On another note I'd really like to see more of Jacare. You can see his Dream-fights on Dailymotion. Chin might be a little suspect, but such fluid jiu-jitsu ...

GSP trains with pretty much world-class talent in every discipline MMA requires. I don't know if he actually beats any of them, but he does give some a run for their money. There isn't a better recipe for improvement than that, and he's got the genetic gifts to take advantage of that fully. Lucky, hard-working guy.

Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza.

He doesn't have a suspect chin. That upkick would have knocked anyone out. It landed square on his jaw, as he was diving forwards to land a haymaker, and turned his head almost completely around. I think he's so used to just having complete dominance on the ground that he got a little impatient and paid for it. Jacare slapped on such a glorious armbar in the semis though, I'm prepared to forgive him for the dropping the finals.

Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza is a BJJ-god. Here's the armbar:

Beautiful. A nice HL:

And it's true that upkick could probably have dropped anyone. Hope we get to see alot more of him.

watched the first video. Not convinced, tbh. Maia and Werdum are more impressive, imo. Almeida even - before the Cote fight of course.

edit: what weight class(es) does he fight in?

Jacare's in the 185 division.

Maia, Werdum, Almeida and Jacare are all world-class grapplers. Jacare was the '05 ADCC Absolute division runner-up, losing to Roger Gracie, who he has a rivalry with (not sure why he wasn't in the '07 one). They're held every two years, so in '09, we'll have another one soon enough. He's been in and won enough tournaments that he's pretty much guaranteed a glorious teaching career for the rest of his life.

I think at this rarefied strata of grapplers, saying that one is more impressive than the other requires a little bit of nit-picking, cognitive bias or personal tastes coming into play. They're all ridonkulously awesome at what they do.

On a side note: I wish Almeida had been more aggressive in the Cote fight. I like the guy's game and his personal history is inspiring.
