The Awl fought the KCCM and killed many of them as they moved east. Maybe this was payback -by using Red Mask to stir up the Awl to fight for their land, they actually got them annihilated and then finished off Red Mask. And it only took 2 of them to wipe out an old enemy........

I don't think Toc's dead yet.. the end of his confrontation with Hood ("Damn wolves") makes me believe that he'll be back. Also, another uber-important point that everyone missed is that.... TOC THE ELDER LIVES!!! so i expect him to surface, possibly in ICE's works.
As for the actual RM, i was going to suggest that KCCM were following him because of the mask, then when it got all muddy, they got confused and sliced him, but since thats been refuted, then yes, its prolly part of a greater story, showing that the most ancient race is clearly stirring and that we'll see more of them.
The entire storyline can also be seen as another example of the Letherii culture corrupting the dur(if you look at it from the other side).
The slaughter of Letherii Indebted to get the herds is there to convey the "war is hell" message.
to put in Historical perspective: Tiste got bogged down fighting each other, KCCH slinked away, to the East, displacing the Awl as they went. Another important minor detail: the Andii were scattered both to the West (Bluerose) and to the eastern shores (Shake)

It is the opposite, Bluerose is to the east (next to Awl'dan) and the shores where the Shake dwell are the western-most of Lether ;)

is it worth thinking about Red mask Getting revenge on the awl for forcing his exile in the first place? so leading them into some genocidal war of Annihilation?

the kell hunter and his lady friend might have been fooled by red mask in this respect and killed him ?
i like the idea it wasn't the real red mask, despite the point of view of his demise, it can still be explained as an elaborate plan by the real Red Mask getting his dirty work done for him?

even if he indeed failed, kill the decoy to cover tracks?
or perhaps the kell hunter found out that red mask likes womens clothing and the feel of satin panties on his red arse?
at any rate i think we are gonna have to find out in the next book, or even the one after that before we find out [but heres me rooting for the cross dressing red mask, that would be a twist]

as for toc, well i think hood and the wolves are gonna be at odds soon enough over him, i felt like toc was gonna meet up with the grey helms and have this big old wolf butt sniffing session or some such, maybe that could still happen?

at any rate, tool and his white face are gonna open a whole can of something on someone, it aint gonna be pretty and it aint gonna be boring, that i don't think i can wait for!
