Silchas Ruin

Agree with your sign-off Abyss, there are a lot of more intresting themes than a who'd win, but it does seem inportant to people and cause much consternation when they have to revise their league tables.
I think SE likes to kick the ants nest occasionally too. Icarium for example - practically unstoppable, yet got whupped upside the head by Karsa (In HoC I think). Not a deciding bout, not a complete face off, but SE demonstrates that circumstance and often pure chance is involved. Conflict is often abrupt and much shorter than expected. Iccers, powerful as he is, can still be overcome by a finger jab from the Time travelling Monkey woman. QB is thrown at the Ickster at the end of Bonehunters and can do nothing. But he's strong enough to batter Silchas. Karsa got sucker punched by Urko Crust.
Even Rake himself decided to get the hell off Seguleh Island because of the continual battles with the inhabitants, who are mortal, if exceptionally trained and borderline insane mortals at that.
Besides, ranking is futile. Pust's mule would do 'em all with one hoof tied behind it's back.

Have you read RG? There is a passage that talks about how the short-tails always whip the regular K-chain but nobody ever wins because the matrons use their death cry and destroy both sides win they lose. Kind of sounds like some kind of nuke to me.
Interesting thought, but I think it's the short-tails with the tech. and the long-tails with the sorcery.
Quote
2: In spite of being nice to Kettle in MT, Silch went ahead and killed her. Seriously, how cold IS this guy?
IIRC, in MT I think Silchas hinted at her that there's a chance he may have to kill her.
Quote
3: Back in the day, he was negotiating with the K'chain Nah'ruk. Let me restate this for clarity:
Silchas Ruin.
Was shaking hands (claws).
WITH THE FRIKKIN SHORT-TAILS.
HelloooOOooooo.....
Silchas Ruin.

WITH THE FRIKKIN SHORT-TAILS.
HelloooOOooooo.....
I think that the Short-tail that Karsa fought had exceptional prowess compared to average short-tails. He is confident enough to go all lone-wolf. Plus, Karsa may have had a much easier time with his sword.

But the KCCM never used sorcery in battle. Silchas merely says that they used 'something necromantic' which is likely Kell hunters (which i reckon the Imass robbed).

I was searching for that passage in RG the other nigth and could not find it again. Whatever it says the matrons do seems to mutually destroy the Nahruk and the regular whenever they do it though.

Also cool was the notion that Silch was content to be stuck under the Azath because he knew bad times were ahead - i suspect this one was exagerrated, because his people were subsequently wiped out and he really does seem pissed at Scabby at least... unless he was willing to see his Andii wiped out to survive.
The Nahruk thing is interesting because in the MT prologue it seems that only because Silch and Scabby were going all draconic on their short-appendaged scaly butts are the Tiste able to take out the skykeeps, yet apprently behind the scenes Silch was plotting a KN/Andii union against the Edur.
WHich means negotiations fell apart, or the KN were willing to sacrifice their people at the battle on Leth... no wonder Silch and the Shorties got along.
- Abyss, trying REALLY hard here, but people seem determined to go all 'ho'd win' on the thread...

Well, prostitutes are notoriously good fighters, but Im not sure Silchas is the leg spreading type.

It made no sense I agree.. Silchas is way tougher but what was SE to do? Let him kill our fav characters or let our fav charcatres kill one of my fav characters.. I think the story would have been better if he never set off for lethares in the first place..certainly running off with his tail between his legs does not fit in with the character that has been built up..one of the sisters claims silchas as one of the biggest threats to CG if CG chooses to oppose him in any way..so even CG wouldnt mess with him directly according to sheltatha lore...
P.s I am heartbroken over kettle growing roots & branches..I was hoping she would turn into some bad ass FA like killer and possibly have some link to Kilmandaros but alas no..

Does anyone reckon there might be a connection between Kilamandros, the Azath and the FA?
Killy's living in an Azath,a force for balance. The FA are a force for balance and look a bit like her children. Maybe Kilamandros went into the Azath and entered into some sort of sexual relationship with it and produced the FA?

You do have a twisted mind
I assumed it confirmed (atleast to me) that FA were Killy's children especially after she calls that FA in the house her whelp.

It appears more as if the Azath and the Forkrul Assail are enemies generally rather than allies.. the comment below from Silchas implies that they are working against each other :-
‘There are places, lass, where Forkrul Assail remain. Imprisoned for
the most part, but ever restless. Even more disturbing, in many of those
places they are worshipped by misguided mortals.’ He hesitated, then
said, ‘You have no idea, Kettle, of the extremity the Azath tower found
itself in. To have chosen a soul such as yours . . . it was like reaching
into the heart of the enemy camp. I wonder if, in its last moments, it
knew regret. Misgivings. Mother knows, I do.’
‘What is this soul you are talking about?’
‘Perhaps it sought to use the soul’s power without fully awakening it.
We will never know. But you are loose upon the world now. Shaped to
fight as a soldier in the war against chaos. Can that fundamental
conflict within you be reconciled? Your soul, lass? It is Forkrul Assail.’
It appears that Silchas deal with the Azath was that he would be freed as long as he used her to create another Azath house and he needed a Finnest in order to do so.

Well, there were two souls in her, the FA soul and the Nameless One (who is the kid of Trull and E'res). By becoming alive, she became the seed of the Azath hold (the castings in MT tell us as much). We don't know if she's actually gone. She was dead before, and it didn't stop her from running around and killing people. And she has a spare soul. She might as well turn up as a guardian of the Azath in one of the next books, or as the debated "kid of T&E that will save KE".
The FA strive for peace, the azath for balance. There might be a difference there
and meh...

Yeh which is odd. Not to change the topic completely (although it is random ) it says that Iccys mum is an 'Overgrown Hag'. The Eres is reasonably small so probs not her. Nameless ascendent 4572 is not looking likely and KIL was looking promising.
However is KIL is the mother of FA which seems likely then how s it Iccy has Toblakai blood?

Unless the FA derived frm the Toblakai?

I'm sure there's more than one 'overgrown hag'. A Toblakai would look overgrown to 'most anyone else. Why does it have to be Kil?
I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.

Possibly we haven't yet met *the* overgrown hag, even if we have met one overgrown hag, ie Kilimandaros. There are a couple of Elder gods unaccounted for which could turn up as the mother of the Toblakai. Never thought Gothos would go for Killy personally, thought he'd prefer some strapping amazonion four-lunged strumpet (I know I would *s*)

But this adds the questionn are the FA the only children of KIL?
Of the four founding races only the KCCM have been accounted for and the TTT are also elder just not founding. In which case KIL shows the traits of obviosly FA with the joints but also Imass (brow, squatness) and also TTT (size and things.) So whereas the FA are recognised children of KIL there could be otherchildren spawned from her blood. Just a thought really cos i dont like to think that Iccys mum is some nameless EG thats gonna appear in the last book.

umm I'm missing something here I think? Icarium is part Jaghut and part Toblakai. What is the connection with Kilmandaros?

Not exactly - Iccy's dad is Gothos, a full blooded Jaghut.
His mom, may, be Kila'.
If Kila is indeed the creator of the FA, this would seem to be a contradiction...
unless there is a common bloodline between FA and T3.... OR, see Bellurdan's comment in GotM that there is Jagjt blood in the T3... Either explanation would sufficie to explain Karsa's reaction to Iccy and thinking Iccy has T3 blood.
But back to Silchas, it seems it wouldn't be beyond him to befriend Kettle just to simplify stabbing her in the chest to set a new House loose down the road. That being said, since she did have two souls, it's not unthinkable that we'll see Kettle again, hanging out with Scabby, two souls imprisoned in the brand shiny new Refugim House. Which may be ANOTHER reason why SIlch was pissed.
- Abyss, *sings*Gothos and Kilamandaros, sittin' in a tree, k-i-s-s-i-n-g...

Actually, that doesn't sound crazy at all. In fact, I believe it's stated somewhere in the series, but I can't even remember which book! Or if I'm right or not. I just know that some passages made this idea almost implied for me.
