Soulshifting doesn't appear to have a close link to being Soletaken.

I think it's a safe bet that Silverfox's soletaken form is...a fox. If you remember the creation ceremony attended by Pran Chole and the others, there was a tattoo of a fox on the Mhybe's stomach that disappeared when Silverfox was "complete".

Not to mention that Kruppe says it's a fox (has that been said before?).
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

Perhaps whether or not you become D'ivers from a soletaken is a choice. They are after all refered to as Soletaken D'ivers a few times. It may not even be a choice. Just something that happens depending on the person. They may all start off as Soletaken and then some split their power, and some keep it in one form (I do not think that soletaken are weaker than D'ivers, after all, in the Azath maze, Messremb is said to be the same size as a large coach, and that my friens is one fucking big bear). Maybe it just happens in the same way, that for sourcerers, a warren "finds them", and noone knows why.

This obviously all just conjecter on my part, but it's something to think about anyway

We don't know that, actually. There's a comment in HoC, Onrack to Trull i think, to the effect that Dessimbelackis was already d'ivers BEFORE the Ritual nuked the FE.

Point being, i thought the Ritual was intended to turn the entire First Empire into shapeshifters, presumably but not certainly soletaken, but it blew and the FE apparently ended up with multitudes of insane shapeshifters of both types.

The other option tho', working loosely from Trake's comment re Ryallandas learning to control the change, is that only especially accomplished soletaken become d'ivers. So perhaps everyone does start with one form and a few work their way up from there.

- Abyss, like climbing the corporate ladder, only with teeth and claws and bloodshed... wait, that's EXACTLY like the corporate ladder...

I was under the impression that the Ritual's purpose was to transform the entire First empire's population (or maybe just the noble caste) into Soletaken. Then something bad happened causing many of them, Dessembelakis included, to become D'ivers instead (i believe i came to this conclusion in BH during the T'rolblahahaha's memories of the events). A process that has to be increadibly traumatic to a mind that isn't accustomed to being split between multiple bodies. I believe there was a quote in one of the books referring to him as the "Emperor who became many", or was it "became Seven", somewhere.
