Kruppe annoys the crap out of me but I can't bring myself to hate him.

However, I intensely dislike both Pormqual (grrrr) and Mallick Rel (grrr!).

Crippled God. He is the weakest part of Malazan Book of the Fallen as a whole. For such a great, epic saga, to have this cliche, broken, insane guy as the main antagonist is a real shame.

As for Midnight Tides, and 4 preceeding novels, he certainly is. Now when I think about it, at some time I disliked Karsna Orlong even more. He was whining all the time about who is he going to kill and what he can do, and yet if not for Torvald Nom's help, he would have died like about dozen times in the first few chapters. For the beginning of HoC he should get a reservation in the Deck of Dragons, as a Whining Bitch of High House Pussy. Good thing he develops into much more interesting character later in the book (and hopefully in one of the further novels that I didn't read yet) and I can keep going with my whining about Crippled God.

High Fist Pormqual without any shadow of a doubt.

Now there are many other characters in the saga who have equally dubious qualities to thier nature yet nigh on all of them in my opinion have even small amounts of redeeming facets to thier character.

Yet this man has none that I have noticed, whether this is a deliberate ploy by Erikson to highlight the complete opposite of Coltaine, I don't know., but I feel he has boobed with this character.

Now I have worked in the Police for a little while and have friends who are still there and I can understand that numpties can get into positions of authority no matter how incompetent, usually by kissing ass, or passing the Sergents exam after the third attempt, but let me explain;

Lets say High Fist Pormqual is the equivalent to say an Assistant Chief Constable/Commisioner IE third in command or so. Now nobody that gets to that level in the uniformed services can be that useless so therefore thats why I say Erikson messed up with him.

Pormqual shouldn't be hated in my opinion. The Chain of Dogs needed to end with Coltrain and Co. dieing.. If they survived the story wouldn't be as good imo.

Karsa - witness, he was bloody annoying most of the time
Felisin - her treatment of others was despicable
I also have to add Lostara Yill. I don't like the way she treated Pearl (I have somewhat of a soft spot for him - LOL)
and every, single noblemen on the Chain of Dogs who gave Coltaine a hard time (most of them are not important characters, I know, but I really REALLY wanted to add them
