A few guesses:

1. This forum seems to be predominantly non-American. I realize we have a good number of non-American Christians, including Gem and Tiste, and a good number of atheist/agnostic Americans including myself, but I'm willing to bet that most of the 56 were Americans, and that most of the 120 were not. Most other countries are noticeably less Christian than the US.

2. While we obviously have at least 56 exceptions here, Christianity tends to discourage the reading of fantasy fiction, so that might have an impact.

3. Statistics suggest that there is a correlation between higher learning and atheism/agnosticism, so maybe the learning curve of Malazan favors the same trend. No offense to the resident Christians; I know we have some well-educated and intelligent Christians here.

well, according to statistics from several years ago, 96% of people in Poland describe themselves as Christian (in a vast majority catholics). People are, obviously, ever full of shit, but hey.

Which Christianity is that exactly? The Chronicles of Narnia and The Lord of the Rings come to mind as huge counters to that statement.

Southern Baptists and Church of God typically hold fantasy genre in low regard. My dad thinks most of the D&D books I read when I was younger was witch craft stuff, and any book not the bible takes away from the message that the bible teaches. He's since lightened up, and never really was harsh, but it is common.

Well with Christianity, one denomination certainly isn't like another. I was raised as a United Methodist and my pastor had a Lord of the Rings poster in his office, and this was before the movies, so it was for the book ;). Out of my four friends who enjoy reading, and are Christian (One Methodist, one Baptist, one Non-denominational, and one Seventh Day Adventist) all of them enjoy fantasy books. Now that I'm thinking about it though, I can think of a lot of other Christians I know who really love fantasy style stories, and they're from all different kinds of churches.

This being said, I lived in Georgia for a year, and can completely see how some churches in the south would discourage things like reading fantasy. I mean why not, I ticked half of them off just because I was a guy with long hair :). This my friends, is why I belong in Oregon :). Oh, and if you were wondering, I'm non-denominational, I don't need a book of doctrine to follow, I have the information I need in my Bible, thanks :p.

Just want to point out that I have religious tattoos (an alpha on one arm, omega on the other, and a crown of thorns armband) and I get a little bit of scorn from the older church goers, its not anything malicious, but it is something that is slowly coming to be accepted in the southern regions.

Well I had a lot of issues with being strongly disliked in Georgia, and not just in the "church areana" if you will. It was rather strange because I was very well liked out west, and it seemed like absolutely nobody there wanted anything to do with me.

And the Hullabaloo over Harry Potter comes to mind as a much more recent and more definitive counter, to your counter.
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

That was for one case in fantasy, not the entire genre in general. That being said, most Christians have accepted that it isn't this, evil thing they thought it to be. I'm a huge fan of the series, and actually if you go into a Christian book store, there is a book out called "How Harry Cast His Spell", and it breaks down the book, and why Christians shouldn't get all overworked by it.

I don't understand why any Christians would get worked up about the fantasy genre in general. Yes, in the Bible it says to not use witchcraft and talk to spirits and such...but, it's a fantasy story, it's not even real, and most of the time it's not even set in the real world. I see it as just something to have fun with. The one thing that I may understand bothering Christians in say...the Steven Erikson series, is the cursing, and the sexual content...but that's not something the Harry Potter series has an issue with haha.
