The bizarre thing is that, unless I'm missing something they've put really little foreshadowing into the comics about what the upcoming catastrophy is even about. Something about Magneto and Gal Lak Tus. I'm hoping that Ultimate FF makes things more clear since Galactus is a traditional FF baddy.

Oh, Gal Lak Tus isn't related to Ultimatum at all. It's in a couple of miniseries, one of which got cut short. Feel free to read those, they're not too shabby.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

I've only ever gotten into a few comic series - Sandman, Lucifer, Preacher and Ultimate X-Men. So, this being a fresh topic, I'll chip in.

Ultimate X-men was such a load of bullshit that I'm surprised that the series didn't fold in on itself. They took all the old stories and characters and made them boring and simple. I don't know if this was an attempt at making the many separate comic book series that featured the X-men merge into one more simple story but all they did was take out the awesome and replace it with boring. I think the main problem was really bad writing. The first story arch was about the government killing mutants indiscriminately with Sentinels. That's cool. But then it becomes down right stupid when the US send like a 1000 sentinels to kill Magneto and destroy the mutant sanctuary. Seems that the worlds brightest military minds didn't consider sending a thousand metal robots at Magneto would be a bad idea. Then there was the story line where Logan threw Cyclops down a pit to die so that he could have Phonix for himself. Scott lies broken and bloodied in this hole for a month and just barely survives. Afterwards he just forgives Logan... just like that. and it goes on and on with these poorly concieved retcons and character interactions. Pfff.

Cyclops zaps Wolverine in the head and kicks him off the team.

However, Wolverine is brought back onto the team in a nobility gesture.

I stopped buying the trades (and even reading the comics) after the awful Rogue gets kidnapped by twins storyline. The first six or seven trades are actually great retellings of the stories (metal robots scene aside). It seems that after that run, the authors stopped being able to have long storylines play out and had to compress things into a short time. The compression led to tiny ass trades and the story suffered greatly. The initial runs were brilliant in the reinvention and art design. I liked it even better than The Ultimates or Spiderman.

One of the problems Marvel has with this Ultimate universe is that there's no one coherent editorial vision. There needs to be a man or a woman saying "We're doing this storyline, here's the beginning and the end, that storyline, beginning, end, and so on until we reach this point. At that point, we either start coming up with new things or we end the run." - and then farming the actual details of the storylines to the authors/artists.

At least, that's how I would have done it.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

I personally would have stabbed Jeph Loeb in the face and prevented him from writing anything else. That would have helped. Also stopping making it a carbon copy of 616.

Can't wait to finish these up and find out what the whole Ultimatum business is about. To be honest the whole thing seems... uninspired, but I'll wait and see.

I HAVE TO! I'VE COME TO FAR TO TURN BACK NOW!

In other news nearly done with Ultimate FF. Ultimate Thanos and the whole universe that surrounds him is fucking amazing. He seems a bit less impressive than regular Thanos, but all the characters and the flavor of their technology and powers is very cool. I wouldn't mind reading a comic book series surrounding that universe.

You know that nothing you can conceivably do to him can match the pain of actually reading them, right?

Finished the Ultimate Extinction story yesterday along with Ultimate Nightmare and Ultimate Secret.

Nightmare and Secret were cool enough but man did Extinction suck.

It feels like someone took a great big dump all over my childhood memories.

Ellis and Doran's ORBITER.

I wanted to like this. i really did. It starts great, it's got an intriguing mystery about a missing space shuttle returning after ten years and rebooting the American space program, the characters are perfect for the story. But the ultimate pay-off at the end is just... bleh. Like the story was building to a big chase scene and instead we got a group hug and smiles all around. I realize that a big chase with 'splosions wasn't what they were going for and see why Ellis and Doran went the way they did, but in the end it was just a bit too cutesy without enough suspence to make me glad i read it. Disappointing.

Has any of you read the comic book "Crossed" by Garth Ennis and Jacen Burrows?

If you have, is it any good and should I invest in it?

No. It has a scene where a man hits another person in the face with a horse's penis while yelling "HORSECOCK" and yet somehow manages to be neither funny or interesting. It's basically Ennis writing himself jerking off the Pope while rubbing himself in excrement and asking if we're offended yet, please, he's trying so hard.

At least 2 of those are good. Although I suspect we may all differ over which of them they are...
If an opinion contrary to your own makes you angry, that is a sign that you are subconsciously aware of having no good reason for thinking as you do. If some one maintains that two and two are five, or that Iceland is on the equator, you feel pity rather than anger, unless you know so little of arithmetic or geography that his opinion shakes your own contrary conviction. … So whenever you find yourself getting angry about a difference of opinion, be on your guard; you will probably find, on examination, that your belief is going beyond what the evidence warrants. Really? I would say one, and even then, I didn't love it.

2 I would call just bad.
