I highly recommend Radical's Shrapnel - Aristeia Rising, by Mark Long, Nick Sagan and M. Zachary Sherman...and some other folks, a dude named Bagus Hutomo

Gorgeous art and great story!

Only problem is that my TPB keeps falling to pieces

Just picked up Warren Ellis' RED. If an Ellis story is going to be made into a movie, i NEEDS to read it first.

It's not one of his best. Not that it's not good, it's just really really slight, even for a comic of its length. They've obviously had to hugely pad out for the film, so it's very different.

The story is a fun, short read with vintage Ellis dialogue and violence and otherwise little merit.
You're not wrong and having viewed the trailer it seems likely the flic has little to do with the comic beyond the most basic of content.

I do note that TOKYO STORM WARNING which was the flip side of the RED collection is also vintage Ellis dialogue and violence only with massive mecha robot battle suits fighting monsters al over neo-Tokyo and is GREAT silly fun. Any story that has a Shogun Warrior (sorta) kick Godzilla (kinda) in the crotch through a building is worth the braintime.

- Abyss, on the balance actually enjoyed STORM more than RED.

Reading THE DARK TOWER adaptations - on the THE GUNSLINGER BORN has been totally enjoyable so far. really captures the spirit of the books and JAE LEE is a comics art god.

Unrelatedly, the WALKING DEAD tv series has a trailer out ...

...looks very true to the comics series in a good way.

I've been reading through Ultimate Spiderman. I'm up to issue nr 80 now and I'm sad there's only 50 issues to go.

Spider-man really was much better when he was a teenager and he had to go through al that crazy shit. Loving the different twists on old stories. I was fucking shocked when Carnage

and I loved the nod to the old Profesor Warren/Parker clone ending the the Carnage storyline. Funny that Bendis said in the letter column that he hated the clone sage and would have nothing to do with it, when they did the exact same ambigious ending as the one that lead to the clone saga.

Norman Osborne is fucking terrifying in the version. Much more menacing than the original version, but of course the old Goblin wasn't a fire breathing genetic hulk.

The Walking Dead is generally just an awesome comic book! I cannot recommend it enough.

Just finished 1-25. Totally agreed.

In completely unrealted comic-related news, i find this fascinating:

http://www.newsarama...-99-100826.html

Comic based on Islamic religion. JLA team-up in the works.
Very interesting read about the concepts behind the stories, like the heroes operate in teams of three because in islam an unmarried girl and boy must have a 3rd person along, and a link to the first issue free (haven't read it yet but curious).

This 99 series reminds me of the Heroes franchise. Same idea about a bad guy and a good guy seeking out potential "heroes" who each have special talents.

Seems similar, yes. Which is why I think the series won't be that successful. Maybe I'll pick up a couple of issues though, to see if these are worth it.

But there are other comic books I'd much rather have, like more TPBs of The Walking Dead

Oh there was nothing wrong with Heroes concept. The problems emerged when it became clear that it had a convoluted plot for no other reason than that the writers were just throwing crazy shit in there out of desperation. Unlike a show like Lost, Heroes showed no sign of having a big overall story arch.

It sounds like 99s author(s) are thinking ahead, hopefully they have more cooking than just some bad guy from the future.

Y'know, the more I think about it, the more this 99 sounds like a superhero concept a friend of mine came up with some years ago.

It was called Ragtag heroes and it was about this professor, Stephen Coppins, who traveled back in time to gather a group of heroes to combat a powerful evil entity.

I know, not exactly the same, but still

HEROES failed at least in part because the network was so pleased to have a hit on its hands that it couldn't keep its grubby little fingers out of the thing to let the writers do their job and the writers reached beyond their grasp.

Comics being a 'smaller' medium and this being a venture free of big industry (more or less) the same probs aren't likely to occur, although the DC connection could send things awry if they have to work in a Batman crossover every three months and Wonderwoman periodically shows up in her bathing suit costume sending the niqab-girls into spasm.

Your friend's idea reminds me of another idea i had a few years ago, about this group of castaways stuck on an island, and one of them was called 'The Professor' and he gather coconuts to make computers and stuff...

Got the second volumes of Chew and The Unwritten today. Chew is good fun with great art and a nice line in black humour, while The Unwritten is shaping up to be something really special. Best thing I've read of Carey's so far.

I'm currently enjoying the "all-new" WONDER WOMAN, written by J Michael Straczynski (creator of Babylon 5, and if you didn't know that get thee to Netflix and queue it up). Also, checking out Dark Horse's game-crossover comic THE OLD REPUBLIC - kinda meh, liking DARK TIMES much better.
OK, I think I got it, but just in case, can you say the whole thing over again? I wasn't really listening.

I've been slowly going through The Walking Dead, and the words "grossly" and "overrated" keep spinning in my head. I'm reviewing the tpbs as I read through them on my blog:

The Walking Dead, Volume One: Days Gone By

The Walking Dead, Volume Two: Miles Behind Us

The Walking Dead, Volume Three: Safety Behind Bars

The Walking Dead, Volume Four: The Heart's Desire

The Walking Dead, Volume Five: The Best Defense

I've gone through Ultimate Spiderman and Ultimate X-men and I'm now 20 issues into Ultimate Fantastic Four.

Ultimate Spiderman was just awesome. A great retelling of the story mixing new characters with the classic. It was both hilarious and different that people kept finding out who Spiderman was. By issue 130 dozens of people knew his identity + the FF, X-men, Ultimates, Shield, etc. And I loved how he stayed a scared 15 year old kid during it all.

Ultimate X-men was such a load of bullshit that I'm surprised that the series didn't fold in on itself. They took all the old stories and characters and made them boring and simple. I don't know if this was an attempt at making the many separate comic book series that featured the X-men merge into one more simple story but all they did was take out the awesome and replace it with boring. I think the main problem was really bad writing. The first story arch was about the government killing mutants indiscriminately with Sentinels. That's cool. But then it becomes down right stupid when the US send like a 1000 sentinels to kill Magneto and destroy the mutant sanctuary. Seems that the worlds brightest military minds didn't consider sending a thousand metal robots at Magneto would be a bad idea. Then there was the story line where Logan threw Cyclops down a pit to die so that he could have Phonix for himself. Scott lies broken and bloodied in this hole for a month and just barely survives. Afterwards he just forgives Logan... just like that. and it goes on and on with these poorly concieved retcons and character interactions. Pfff.

Ultimate FF however is way awesome. Like the above they're reinventing the old but they are staying true to the characters and they are keeping the Sci-fi/space exploration/Super science in there and its awesome. Young Reed Richards is so much more interesting than the old school version.

Can't wait to finish these up and find out what the whole Ultimatum business is about. To be honest the whole thing seems... uninspired, but I'll wait and see.

Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.
