My understanding of Sylar's powers is that he "learns" how to use the ability. His base or first power was understanding how things work. He doesn't steal or copy powers like Peter or his Father. So even if there is a reset with the eclipse, unless Sylar lost his memories he would still have all the powers that he has learned.

He used to rip out his victim's power and leave them dead within minutes. That implies absorption rather than learning.

That's incorrect I think he repeatedly says he needs to understand and likens the process to looking at the workings of a watch.
Peter copies powers by proximity to the users, but then only has to remember how they feel to use them, this was from the first series when he was being educated by Claude the invisible man.
Papa Petrelli absorbs a physical escence which we've seen, although I liked the idea that he copies them and then makes you foregt which someone suggested.
On a side note since the Peter fom the future has the powers and the scar we will either see him get the scar before his powers come back or we will see the thing that nearly gives him the scar and we will know the future is altered, if it's the latter then I'd suggest we are going to be waiting unitl the last episode or 2 for him to get his powers back if at all.

I always assumed Sylar 'ate' the bit of the brain and therefore absorbed the power, however post stealing Claire's power that seems incorrect. Therefore I think its correct that he simply understands how the power works and then mimics it, rather than absorption.

Ah, but the future Peter was from a timeline where Nathan's press conference went ahead as planned - so Arthur wouldn't have had to do any of the stuff he's now doing...
Of course, every time we've seen a Future Peter, they've always had that scar, so I imagine he'll still get it somehow.

Same for me. That I can't stop watching is kind of annoying in itself.

Yes, but the future Peter showed current Peter his future (where he died) and it had not changed as a result of the events at the press conference, so the catalyst for the events is still there.

Given that Sylar seems to pick up the Peter version of learning pwers thru empathy rather than brainz, i wonder if their different upbringings led to the different versions of the same power.
Papa Petrelli is unclear - he could have been using Matt's Dad's telepathy to make Hiro forget, rather than some aspect of his power-stealing mojo.
- Abyss, ...also, cannot stop watching....

But when did he steal Mori's powers? Didn't he just kill him? I don't really understand why, but... he hasn't turned up again since, so I assume he'd dead, and I'm also assuming that Arthur can't steal powers after people die.
That said, he locked Mama Petrelli in her own mind before, when Mori was still around, so... maybe he got them from somewhere else.
Although that brings up another thing I don't really understand. Wasn't he still stuck in bed with deadly illness at that point?

At least they answered the comic question and I like the fact that they tied in the copy/version he gave to the courier
Bar that I'm finding it very frustrating. I understand some people are able to die and then come back through powers but seriously, some people should die and stay dead. There should be consequences to actions. Like when sylar is about to get revenge, he should get it. I know wouldn't make so hollywood but that would be a good thing! Will keep watching but through gritted teeth

Eclipse part 1 was great - part two... what a cop-out.
Are we meant to believe that HRG, with a rifle trained on Sylars head, paused, and waited for him and Elle to get it on in a (laughable) position on the floor, and then tried to kill them both? And that Claires mum managed to just get Claire out of hospital with nobody noticing?
Part 1 looked like making some promising changes, like developing Sylar a bit more. Part 2 put him back where he started. Why 'reset' characters rather than develop them?
I'll still keep watchin it tho!

The source of Sylar's extra abilities isn't the same as Peter's though. We've seen from previous episodes (esp Claire) that in order to get someone's ability, he needs to _understand_ how it works. Whether that understanding comes from poking around in their brain, or from empathy, that understanding isn't going to go away. Perhaps he needs his own ability to understand fully enough to make use of the ability himself, but once it does return, IMO understanding returns with it, and so he would get his copied abilities back as a consequence of the return of his own.
It is perfectly monstrous the way people go about nowadays saying things against one, behind one's back, that are absolutely and entirely true.

I didn't mind his powers returning, just that the whole episode taught him nothing; the 'hunger' of his ability is supposed to blind him, but he had control of that before the eclipse.
I just don't like to see writers keeping characters from developing so they can get more episodes out of them doing the same thing over again, because they think that's what people want.
(And if we are to believe HRG, Sylar and Peter aren't related after all, so any similarity between them is unconnected by blood)

How does Arthur know precisley where (and when) people are?!
And what happened to the irish girl that Peter left in a now redundant future?
I like it, even though it makes no sense!

Best line in the episode

This was the strongest episode of the season by a fair margin, I think. Still some ginormous plot holes:
