You guys and girls get far more out of the story lines than I do. I think of
Crokus merely as a conduit of information. Something like Dr. Watson to
Sherlock Holmes. Crokus is there to talk and interact with the more powerful so the reader can get their ideas and plans and, thus, follow the story easier
If Crokus is destined for a big role in the epic, I wish him well

I for one welcome our necromantic 2year old thread raising noobs....

I am pretty sure Cutter will actually die (for real this time) at some point.
if nothing more to break the cliche of farm boy (read thief boy) saves the day. I am sure he is destined for Tragedy in a Romeo and Juliet type way...

I actually dont mind him as a character like allot of people do, he has gotten more @ss then any other character....
You can't find me because I'm lost in the music

Cutter's stroyline is intertwined with those of several interesting characters--Spite, Mappo, and Barathol.
I don't find Cutter himself to be esp. interesting, although he's probably the character that did the most growing, in the series.
I don't wish him harm, but not too overly concerned about him either. If he dies tragically, I won't be surprised and shocked. After Pearl's death, I've come to expect bad endings for Malazan lovestories.

I think the theme for Malazan lovestories is that the world gets in your way, period. Sometimes gods get in your way, too.

Cutter / Crokus is likely to get dragged deep, deep into Cotillion / ST business via his connection to Apsalar, possibly fatally, but I think he'll get laid in the end.

I can only hope.

re Cutter, he's always been one of my favourite characters in the series, mostly because he has really changed and grown along the way. SE has also tried to show the effect Cutter's influences have had on him, from Kalam, Icarium, Fiddler, Cotillion and Heboric, and Apsalar to an extent.

It's Heboric in TB who notes Cutter became the leader of their little group, and even back in GotM, when Lorn kicked Murillio Coll and kruppe's butts, it was Crokus who had enough brains to point out the fight was useless, while everyone else just charged in and got cut a lot.

Mammot was his guardian, but not his blood relative, and Mammot was Torud Cabal. It's unclear whether the Cabal is there to assist the return of the Darujhistan Tyrant-King(s) or prevent it, but either way i'm also wondering whether Cutter has a connection there.

It's interesting that he was willing to follow Apsalar on the path of ascendency, ie he was willing to ascend to be with her, even tho he knew he was losing her romantically.

We never really saw much of the Darujhistan Thieves Guild, and it may be the Assassins are in a mess after Ocelot and Vorcan were taken out - i wonder if there's a power vacuum there Cutter may find himself sliding into. His comments in GotM about entering noble society may also be prophetic.

Scillara suggested she was willing to learn how to be a thief, but go back to HoC and she makes a comment or two about thinking of herself as a 'vessel' - we saw both Itkovian and Heboric make similar comments in the Shield-Anvil capacity, and i wonder whether her role is bigger than it yet seems. Iirc, it was suggested by Cotillion at the end of HoC that she is important.

And then there's the QoD thing... not sure how to take that... the QoD is allied with ST and CoT, and Cutter is one of Cot's agents... there may be something to that.

My favorite theory is the one that theorizes that Crokus parents were DFaru royals and that they descend from the tyrant.

So Crokus will return to become the new leader, king, tyrant guy of Darujistan.

Technically, while it has sinister connotations, 'Tyrant' doesn't mean any more than Monarch, Overlord, Witch-King, Masterblaster or Queen of England.

- Abyss, notes he could be a NICE Tyrant. Tyrant-Lite... all the Tyrant, half the evil.... a kinder, gentler Tyrant....

Yes well- I think that's the tip of the iceberg- methinks ST and Cotillion are going to cut him a deal for Apsalar's freedom (of body, of spirit), but he's going to get run through the wringer, possibly act as errand-boy in the center of the undoubtedly insane convergence at the end of the storyline.

I still hope he gets some.

In the Tyrant of Darujhistan thread that Apt started, an interesting side-conversation about Cutter broke out. The gist of it was that an awful lot of book-time has been spent on him (one of the few to have POV chapters in 4 of the 6 books), and an awful lot of powerful characters have taken a pretty strong interest in him (Mammat, Oponn, Crimson Guard, Apsalar, Cotillion, Hood, etc.). And the fact that the Soldier of Death may have specifically seeked out Cutter to deliver his messages about the tyrant of Darujhistan may have also been significant.

So I figured, instead of hijacking that thread, I'd bring it up in it's own place: Just what do you expect Cutter's destiny to be? Have we been given any foreshadowing/hints that you want to bring out? And if he is going to become a power in the story the way Paran, Apsalar, Karsa, and Trull have...when will it happen? And what form will it take?

This is what i don't get. The SoD talked about his "stick-pivoting brethren" and spoke of them like idiots who didn't know the truth (read it for yourself, you'll see it). So, unless the SoD is an old Seguleh 2nd, why wouldn't he know? Then again, Baudin lost his memory when he became teh uber Knight...

Now an interesting question arises there.... did the SoD perhaps actually seek out Cutter, with the whole 'pursuing Skinner/visiting Drek's massacre/homage to Heboric' thing as just a pretense?

Hood is a part of the QoD/ST alliance, and we know Cotillion, ST's partner in crime, has an interest in Cutter.

I don't want to derail this into another Seguleh thread - but given the Seguleh/Tyrant/Darujhistan link to Cutter, it's not that off - i'll note it appeared the Soldier had been in that role a LONG time, which may date back far enough to when the Seguleh originated as some form of army related to the Tyrant King. Baudin's memory was supressed, likely because of the trauma of his death. The Soldier was (relatively) brain intact.

So why shouldn't the Soldier know about the history, and perhaps there was a deliberate move by someone to clue Cutter in that there is more going on in Darujhistan than he knows. Cotillion may WANT Cutter in place in the city for whatever is to happen next (plus, given Kalam is out of commission, Apsalar is drunk and Lostara is off with the 14th, Cot may not have any other agents handy).

- Abyss, notes 'Cutter: Agent of R.O.P.E.' has a certain flair to it...

(Edit to add, hey, i think i may use that as a sig series... :p )
