See, I learned that latin (roman) words ending in "i" end with the "eye" sound, like "radii" and "alumni" and, er, "pi". Wait, that's greek.
Anyway, when I see two "i"s together, I immediately think "ee-eye".
As for "Tiste", I can't imagine myself ever pronouncing it "taist", but oh well.
