Well, I always thought it was Tis-tay on-dee-eye, the first word of course was a wide-eyed stupid guess, the later is more, uh, romanesque. As the double "i" appears only in certain roman-latin names(as far as I know) such as Julii, which is pronounced joo-lee-eye. Just my thoughts, but I thought they were reasonable.
(same with Letherii, it is the people of Lether, and they seem kinda romanesque so... roman-latin pronunciation)
Bring it on Hetan, I wanna see how you prove me wrong this time .

@serrat...(letherii) le-ther-ree, (lether) leather...not official of course, but it is how SE and I pronounce it in conversation

@Kallor, alright then, that's pretty official for being not official. I kinda liked my way though .

TEE-stay ANdee eye, or perhaps "AHNdee eye." Either way, the "ii" is "ee eye", as it Yipee eye eh(?).
And for the record, I think Anomander Rake is a really cool name. Of course, so are Whiskeyjack and Tattersail.
Now, how about K'Chain Che'Maille? Wait, is that spoiler?

im unsure about how to pronounce Tiste (whether it's Tist-ee, or Tist-eh), but the Andii part would be pronounced Andi-i, with the two i's pronounced hard, like an "ee" sound (so, And-ee-ee). you see that spelling/pronounciation in old roman words all the time, i.e. socii, triarii, etc.
but then again it doesnt really matter because you're reading it in your head!

@SiriusL
I can't imagine a name constituting a spoiler. My best run at that mouthful is something like "keh-CHAIN che-MAH-lay". I hate to leave letters unpronounced, makes them seem useless.
Also, I agree, Anomander Rake is just about the coolest name for that type of character I have ever heard. I can't even imagine emulating the feeling I get when I read that name. Cheers to SE for creating it.
And cheers to Sirius for agreeing with my pronunciation.
@rlfcl
I've always heard the old roman suffix "ii" pronounced with the first "i" hard and the second like "eye". Of course thats what I have heard so that doesn't constitute much.

Mmm...makes me hungry for Mexican food. "I'll have two K'Chain Che'Mailles with green salsa."
Anyway, I'm with on the silent letters, though I never thought to pronounce that last "e" in Maille. I guess I was thinking "chainmail", with some extra sounds added in.
Regarding Anomander, I know. I had a read it a few times the first time I saw it, and now it flows like it's my son's name. Too bad we don't plan on having more kids... :eek:

It happens a lot that I fall back on swedish pronounciation of wierd names, and this is the case with Tiste Andii...
I say: Tis-teh An-dee
Are there any spelling rules that says that double i is pronounced ee-eye? Or is it just that you read it separately as Andi and then i. Any word in the english language that has double i for that matter?
I'm not gonna change, I'm just curious.
In swedish, Andi and Andii is pronounced exactly the same. The sound of i doesn't change read separately and in Andi. But Andii looks much cooler of course.

the reason i pronounce it as ee-ee (two hard i's), is because that's how i've learned to pronounce roman words with similar spellings in class (im a classical studies major). such as socii (soke-ee-ee) and triarii (triar-ee-ee). my teacher for most of these classes is german though so maybe that's just how he pronounces those words.

Thanks for the input, rlfcl.
Oh right, I didn't read through the whole thread before posting. I'm still going to keep saying it my way, of course.
