I'm a long way into City of Saints of Madmen, a work with plenty of depth - stories hidden in stories, clues scattered throughout to an underlying tale.
The best so far is King Squid: A pamphlet ostensibly written by Frederick Modkan about giant squid, with a thirty-eight page bibliography. I was astonished by the way VanderMeer was able to weave so many stories and pieces of information into this text, especially the way he manages to tell Modkan's story using notes and book titles in the bibliography.

C.S. Forester - Hornblower and the "Hotspur"
OK, I think I got it, but just in case, can you say the whole thing over again? I wasn't really listening.

I think I read that one, long ago.

I'm still reading Jared Diamond's "Guns, Germs and Steel." Awesome, awesome book.

Yeah, reading Kearney got me hankering for the nautical tales, so I'm re-reading the Hornblower books.

Let us know how Guns, Germs, and Steel is when you finish. I've been thinking about reading but it never makes it into my to-read pile...

Re-reading John Marco's wonderful "Tyrants and Kings" trilogy. Very cool.
