In breaks between the Outlander short fiction book I've started THE BLACK COMPANY: BOOKS OF THE SOUTH omnibus, and I must say that it's SO much easier to get into this one than the first since I know all the players well already (or at least the remainder of the original group), and the acceptance that since these are "annals" this explains the clipped manner of storytelling Cook uses. Anyways, good stuff so far, but only 50 pages into SHADOW GAMES.

Fair warning Furies is pretty trope and basic though still enjoyable for sure. Bk 2 is when Alera really starts to kick in awesome gear.

Really want to bull through Outlander 4 so I can start Broken Earth.

I fear I made the mistake of watching that one great Comic Con panel where Butcher basically tells the audience that Alera was conceived in sort of a "I dare you to write a good story with these two lame clichés" context. Can't get that out of my head.

Oh, and what everyone else is saying: Read Broken Earth. Do it.

I got hooked by the Sort of Roman Empire thing and enjoyed it for fun reading candy in between all that bleak grimdark stuff. I still have no idea what a Pokemon really is.

Re BROKEN EARTH - yes, it really is that good, and yes, those of you considering should definitely read it. The trilo runs together very nicely back-to-back and reading them together really really amps up the impact of the big moments.

Re ALERA - Book 1 is really really mediocre at best. I would have stopped there but for various forumites' warnings and general love for Jim Butcher via Dresden. I found 2-6 steadily improved and i enjoyed the hell out of them, in a literary big hollywood Butcher having fun kind of way.

Niven's Inconstant Moon is a lot of fun.

Also, Asimov was such a dog:

Quote

You might think that attending a convention alone would insure the height of vice and revelry and perhaps you're right. I myself don't know about such things. Nor was I to be given a chance to find out. Lester del Rey and his new bride, Judy-Lynn, were in attendance too. They made sure that they had the room right next to me; they supervised my every breakfast and continually dogged my footsteps. All I was allowed to do was to wave at girls from a distance.

They said they were trying to save me from myself and to this day I don't know what they meant. I wasn't planning to do anything by myself.

Finished "Metro 2034" in the big trilogy volume.

Not a fan. It dragged, and felt like a pretty pointless side-story. Not enough new world-building to make up for a weaker story.

2035 goes back to Artyom, so hopefully it's better.

In commute, finally started "Saint's Blood" yesterday (was feeling a bit out of it on Mon, so didn't read) and.... somehow I'm like 150 pages in in one sitting. De Castell's bite-sized chapters do a great job pulling me into the story.

Finished up Dreams of Steel and continuing onto Bleak Seasons which is usually my least favorit book of the south, but we'll see I got a good feeling about it this time perhaps I'm in the right mood.

....Aaaaand I fnished Saint's Blood

I suspect I will be buying Tyrant's Throne this weekend. This book was really, really good.

Meanwhile I need a new commute book. I think i'll try "Cursed", the second Alex Verus novel.

Finished Beneath the Sugar Sky. It was fine, nothing extraordinary. It was nice to catch up with the characters from the first Wayward Children book, though, which I was not expecting.
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

I read Vox recently. The second half was weak, I thought the focus on the characters was much more interesting.

Reading The Outsider by Stephen King. I don't know how he draws out tension for so long so well.

I also read the Hodges trilogy (Mr. Mercedes, Finders Keepers, End of Watch). It was pretty good, and I enjoyed King's shift back to a genre novel (although Finders Keepers was the best, I thought).

Finished La Belle Sauvage. Thoroughly enjoyed it and very excited for the next Book of Dust entry!

Unsure what to read now. I've got a Richard III book to finish and then might try another history.

Recently finished The Brass God by K M McKinley, which is an ok installment in the series.

Also read:

Herald of the Storm by Richard Ford which was moderately good
Cold Magic by Kate Elliott which after a weak beginning gets a lot better
Siege and Storm by Leigh Bardugo which is another weak installment in the Grisha series
Colombus Day by Craig Alanson which in spite of everything was extremely entertaining.

Currently reading:
Godsgrave by Jay Kristoff
Helliconia by Brian Aldiss

So, The Broken Earth...how did I miss this when it came out? Well, I went and picked up all three today. I am excited. High expectations.

@ Abyss: The Malazan Book of the Paw Patrol...I'm still laughing.

Ho;y fuck, Metro 2035 gets bleak.

on the bright side, Metro 2034 makes more sense now, since the plot's integrated somewhat into this one.

But yeah, that's damn bleak.

Damn I just finished Woken Furies.

Please tell me there's more Kovacs...? Or is it a trilogy?

That was the best of the 3, I think.

Anyone read The Dark Defiles? I might have to give them a go next.

So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

You definitely will enjoy those three books, especially if you start now. They are perhaps grimmer than the Kovacs books, but are more approachable due to the three main characters.

Counter-opinion: while I read all three Land fit for Heroes books and enjoyed the action, I thought all three books had terrible pacing and very little actually happens in those books. In retrospect they're pretty disappointing.

Edit: were you guys aware that there's a Land fit for Heroes game on Steam? Looks bad but still.
