Alera is not good until Book 2. Then it's fantastic for 3 books, then gets weaker towards the end.
I'd suggest sticking to Cook

Starting Seanan McGuire's Beneath a Sugar Sky. Didn't realize this would be a direct sequel to Wayward Children, so that's neat. And the premise looks like it's going to be fun.
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

Started Diana Gabaldon's SEVEN STONES TO STAND OR FALL anthology of Outlander short fiction/novellas, and it's pretty solid so far. It's nice to be reading stories set in this world that aren't backbreaking, overstuffed doorstopers. Clean, tidy and short stuff.

Just finished Jemisin's BROKEN EARTH trilo. Hell of a finale in bk 3. Really well executed culmination of everything leading up to that point.
Also impressed with the way the author makes her points clear without hammering the audience with the explanation-hammer.
I enjoyed this series a lot. Excellent pace, interesting setting, engaging characters. Recommended.

Glad you liked the series. In terms of quality this has to be one of the best trilogies in several years.

Well...I guess I'll just doubletime Furies of Calderon and Black Company then.
Amen, this series was superb.
On a kind of unrelated note though, I really dislike Jemisin's patreon thingy.

I should have added this was all earbook and the narrator is very good.
You may think she is inconsistent at times... she isn't, but she varies between a person's inner monologue voice, and someone else relating words that person says. It's an interesting choice but actually very effective.

I have two more Audible credits coming up in the next two months, and I've been toying with getting THE FIFTH SEASON with one of them to finally check this series out. It's got hard praise from everyone I trust, so I think I'll probably do so.

Fair warning Furies is pretty trope and basic though still enjoyable for sure. Bk 2 is when Alera really starts to kick in awesome gear.
Really want to bull through Outlander 4 so I can start Broken Earth.

I fear I made the mistake of watching that one great Comic Con panel where Butcher basically tells the audience that Alera was conceived in sort of a "I dare you to write a good story with these two lame clichés" context. Can't get that out of my head.
Oh, and what everyone else is saying: Read Broken Earth. Do it.

Book 1 is the second best Alera book. I'm just sayin'.
I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.

The strange narration is half the fun! Tiste, try, 5th Season you won't regret it.

I actually loved Alera in spite of tropes. They never really seemed to get in the way.
And BK, bull faster.

I put Alera down for years after reading Bk1. It took a lot of convincing from the Board to make me read Bk2, cuz I really didn't like Alera 1
