Damn I just finished Woken Furies.

Please tell me there's more Kovacs...? Or is it a trilogy?

That was the best of the 3, I think.

Anyone read The Dark Defiles? I might have to give them a go next.

You definitely will enjoy those three books, especially if you start now. They are perhaps grimmer than the Kovacs books, but are more approachable due to the three main characters.

Finished the Metro trilogy.

The last book is a messy, cynical, depressing commentary on a lot of stuff. Depressing, all the more so because of how familiar it sounds.

Since I ended up picking up "Tyrant's Throne", I'll probably read that next.

Thanks, I think I'll give it a go then. I found the Kovacs books to have a slightly disjointed pace, but all the meetings and travelling and early characters all had a part to play in the bigger story. I did find myself on occasions (especially during Broken Angels) wanting to hurry up and finish. But then with an ending like Woken Furies, I want more. Oh, and I'm really not into his sex stuff... It's all a bit uncomfortable, a bit like he's getting a bit carried away, and typing it with one hand. A bit of subtlety there wouldn't be a bad thing. I mean, Iain Banks would get sex and sci fi sex into the story, but it never seemed lewd or gratuitous, and often had a comical element to it.

The Steel Remains downloading.
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

Last night I finished War of the Wolf by Cornwell. Move on to Prince of Fools.

I haven't finished book 9 or 10 of the Saxon Stories yet but is it still good?

Just started my first Malazan re-read with GotM. Can't believe how excited I am about it! The first time around, I got through TCG and Assail but only FoD from the Kharkanas trilogy.

I've been thinking a lot recently about Caitlin R. Kiernan's The Red Tree and how great it was (and how it will be probably top my Best Reads Of 2018 list) so I've started in on her Daughter of Hounds, which I guess is a sequel to her Threshold series, but she actually recommends reading it first*, so here I go.

*For reading her novels, she recommends The Red Tree first, then Daughter of Hounds, then whatever order you want afterwards.

"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

More of the same, still a fun read. Since they are about 300 pages, the repetition isn't too bad, but with Uhtred in his 60s it's getting time to pass the torch or start a new series.

Finished the second Alex Verus novel. Liking this series. Will look into tracking down book 3.

The in the meantime, "Tyrant's throne" will be both a home and commute book. Based on the fact that I read the 3rd one in 2 days, I figure I should be done by the end of the week.

I really enjoyed that book. Eames got the comedy of his writing down excellently I thought.

"Uncle, are you okay?"
The old mans eyes floated a moment before landing on her. "Why wouldn't I be?"
"There's a sword in you!"
"Ah, well... there's a sword in all of us."

The Alex Verus books are really great. The maintains consistency and gets quite a bit of character development done. Its a fascinating counterpoint to Dresden.

Bloody Rose is a super sequel and IMO a better book than Kings of the Wyld. The last part was perfectly done.

So... I just finished Furies of Calderon / Codex Alera 1 this morning. I'd say it's cliché in all the right ways. Likable characters, strong prose, and an interesting magic system really carry the novel. If this story had been handled by a less capable writer, it would probably have been incredibly derivative and forgettable. That said, it's not a great book in itself. Far too predictable, very unoriginal characters, clumsy obvious foreshadowing.
Going back to his legendary comic con panel, it's really easy to see how Butcher tried to make a point with this book. You can actually write an entertaining, decent novel even if you use tired clichés. Still, I feel that Butcher went a bit too far with this. The novel would definitely have benefited from a few more twists and turns. Or a main character who isn't a shounen protagonist.

On to Academ's Fury.

Got any predictions? I think you're in for a nice treat especially if you're gonna back to back the 6.

Well...The emperor of the realm is called Sextus, his son was Septimus...so, unless my latin has failed me, the next in line would have to be Octavius...There was also some foreshadowing as to the idea that Tavi and Kitai will become a thing, and that this weird wasp creature from the wax forest is not yet done. That's what I can think of, off the top of my head.
