[End of Disc One]

Reading Age of Legend, book 4 of Sullivan's First Empire series. This series is growing on me with every book, to the point where I don't care if the plot moves slowly because I enjoy the character relationship stuff so much. If this series keeps it up, I might end up ranking it above Ryria Revelations.

Not quite the same type of story, but at times not far off. Certainly Murderbot's default inclination towards murder isn't too big a stretch.

It's more 'whodunnit?' than killfeste, but per upthread, i enjoyed it and think it worth a read.

Funished Lady in the Lake to complete the Witcher series reread. Its uneven after the first few books but you're invested in the characters so worth the read. Now I feel I can happily watch the new TV series.

So I can immerse myself back into Kellanved's Reach and see for myself how it goes...

On earbooks listening to Fall of Angels as I continue to listen my way through the Horus Heresy. Some pretty standard set up going on Calliban. All the books are solidly written but few have been really good so far.

Finished the earbook of TO GREEN ANGEL TOWER PART 1 and I think I'll go straight into part 2. It didn't feel like such a slog as the first two books and I really began to actually enjoy it. Only 32 hours to go!

I think this one will feel quite quick actually as there is a ton of story to wrap up:

Miriamelle and Simon falling in love and their confrontation with Elias;
Who or what Pryrates is;
Who or what Kamaris is;
The whole mystery surrounding Kamaris come to think of it;
The defeat of the Norns;
The defeat of the Storm King;
The taking over of Naban by Josua & co;
The final showdown between the brothers;
The mystery of Brightnail/memory and what King John actually got up to;
Hopefully a nice violent end to Maegwynn because she annoys me;
Jeriki rogering the Norn Queen with Sorrow;
An intense and far too graphic sex scene between Binabik and Kantaka the girl troll.

OK so maybe not all those things will happen but I reckon most will and probably more I've forgotten. I'm looking forward to it.

So yesterday among the pre-New Year hubbub and cleaning I finished "Brief History of Japan". Interesting launching point for further research and a fascinating overview.

Today I finished "Spider's War". It was a surprisingly decent ending with some nice feel-good moments I didn't really expect.

Traitor Son will have to wait until 2020 since I'm gonna be out for most of the next 2 days.

Finished the fourth Witcher book, Time of Contempt. Didn't like it much.

As good as the first two story collections are, I dislike the later books all the more. I don't care for Ciri. I don't care for these scene jumps and time jumps. The style of writing is irregular and unsatisfactory despite having some strong moments.

I'm conflicted. I could read the last 2-3 books. Or I could read anything else and probably enjoy it more.

Pshah. There's ten minutes left of the decade. Tomorrow starts the Gardens of the Moon re-read!

I think I'll start the prologue so I don't finish the year on a disappointing book.

Finished listening to Arden's Winternight trilogy---pretty good. Her depiction of Russian paganism is so convincing I didn't realize that it's only very loosely based on historical evidence until I looked up the entities. Then I thought she made up most of the mythology, but several of the major characters are sort of composites of recorded pagan figures.

Started listening to The Raven Tower. Taking a little while to get into it, though it's mildly interesting so far. (Perhaps I'd like it better if I hadn't read some minor spoilers in a review.)

For NYE I'm going to binge watch the Witcher (while fasting), then when I'm done The Raven Tower (stand-alone with no sequels planned, since I've decided I prefer to do series that have already been finished (to avoid the annoyance of waiting for the next book) and finish them sequentially (so I can better osmose the author's and the characters' souls...)) I'll begin listening to the Witcher books, starting with The Last Wish and The Sword of Destiny.

Reading a book before watching a tv show based on it almost always renders the tv show disappointing. Whereas reading the book after watching the show tends to deepen and expand the universe and (for me, at least) is generally more enjoyable.

Are the Witcher novels any better in Polish?...

The raven tower is a weird book but I liked it.


Finished Mur Lafferty's Six Wakes. Interesting murder mystery in space.

Bought, started and finished Cassandra Khaw's Hammers on Bone this evening in a couple hours.

Imagine if a bored Eldritch Horror possessed the body of Humphrey Bogart and went about present day England pretending there was still need for Hard-boiled PI's.

It's a short and very entertaining read. I'm not sure I actually understood the ending, or that I liked it, but it's definitely something else.

Which is why I'm starting book two: A Song for Quiet straight away.
