I was wrong about The Raven Tower being a stand-alone novel, though no sequels are planned: 'Back when I was writing mostly short fiction, I wrote and sold a number of stories in the same universe that The Raven Tower is set in. I always knew I wanted to go back to it at some point.'

Also, she says she was in fact inspired by

Finished "Fall of Dragons"
A fine series that turned out to be.

Contemplating finally starting "Shogun" next.

Finished Mark Lawrence's wibbly wobbly timey wimey trilogy and utterly loved it. Really superb little series.

Now onto some heavier stuff, in the form of a non fiction book my mum got me called "Why we get the Wrong Politicians".

I'm getting mad already tbh. It's actually a very fascinating look into Parliament, Westminster and the whole British political system as a whole. The author is doing an admirable job of staying neutral, though she is the assistant editor to the Spectator so I'm finding it hard not to be cynical about everything she says.

Also, despite it being an updated version from sometime in 2019 it's not quite so fresh that the utter disaster of a General Election last month is included so a lot of what she says or considers is kind of old news and probably meaningless.

That being said, her premise is that the whole thing needs a shake up. That really it's a system designed so that rich white men can keep power and this needs to change to better represent society. And I definitely agree with that. I'm afraid she probably won't work at the Spectator long with radical views like that...

Becky Chambers' The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet

One of my D&D group lent it to me and so far it seems like an excellent call - great fun! Little bit Firefly-esque in terms of a mismatch crew aboard a reasonably run down ship, and they've been handed a spectacularly paying job which doesn't have "unexpected bad shit will go down" written all over it in shiny letters, honest!

Just Finished Scalzi's OLD MAN'S WAR.
Satisfying. Surprisingly old school mil sf at times but in a good way. They key story point, that 75 year old humans are willing to become interplanetary soldiers in exchange for youth, is developed well enough, It seems to me that the story could have done more with that angle, but in the broader worldbuilding it worked and i was left wanting to see more of a universe where human colonial efforts are in competition with a whole pile of hostile other races.

Decided to stick with it roll book 2 THE GHOST BRIGADES.

Grabbed LICANIUS 3, but before I dive in I’m going to read SIX OF CROWS by Leigh Bardugo. Loved the trilogy from the Grishaverse and with the Netflix show being made, time to read the second duology which has been on the TRP for a while.

I didn't think much of Six of Crows Iirc, curious to see your take on it as you've already read stuff in that IP

Perhaps my grounding in the Grishaverse allows for a more forgiving look into SIX, but I'm already halfway through and REALLY enjoying it. Very much using the world that the trilogy made to tell a fun heist story with a gang of ne'erdowells. Did you read the sequel CROOKED KINGDOM, or did SIX turn you off?

I liked Six of Crows a lot more than the original Grishaverse stories. Far more competent protagonists.

I find that I am as well in fact. And I mean I REALLY enjoyed the Grisha trilogy so for this to be winning me over so hard, it must be something special. Did you read the second book of that Duology?

-----

On another note, I grabbed Bardugo's short story Grishaverse collection THE LANGUAGE OF THORNS: MIDNIGHT TALES & DANGEROUS MAGIC, and it turns out that she's started a NEW Grisha Duology focusing on fan-fave character from the trilogy Nikolai Lantsov (son of the king, pirate, scoundrel, and ladies man), so I grabbed Book 1 of that THE KING'S SCARS...so I should be all caught up by the time the show drops.

I don't recall to be honest, I'll have to check out a synop to see if I did, Therese very chance I bought both at once

I've read both, probably a double purchase.

Wasn't overly enamoured with either, felt like a poor man's version of Lies of Locke L'amour, and what the subsequent books SHOULD have been

Ah, fair enough. I can certainly see that comparison.

Today I finished my re-read of Redemption Ark and started a fantasy debut from late last year, The Black Hawks by David Wragg. Not too far into it but am enjoying it a lot - it's a snarky post-Abercrombian fantasy in the Mark Lawrence or Alex Marshall vein, with characters that somehow (so far) manage to be likeable despite pretty much all being argumentative dickheads.
Also manages the trick of moving things at a right old clip while simultaneously taking its time a bit to get the characters adjusted.

Will report back but this is a promising start to a new series.
I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.
