Nobody really ... said:

there's no indication that l'oric is a dragon. not even a soul-taken one.

can you quote what makes you think the Lady Envy has a brother? It's not something i'd noticed

When Lady Envy talks with Lanas Tog o floating town they talk about Baljaag, how she's awaken and Lady Envy admits it was her brother who put godess in that ay.

I really don't mean to be rude and am in-fact genuinely interested - my copy is at my cottage and i shall remain in london for at least another month so i can't read it myself :p

could you be a marvel and quote exactly what she says?

I have a vague memory of the bit, but somehow (like hetan) i'd always thought the great lady meant krul.

If you can quote it for me I shall love you ever lastingly :p

The only bit I can find is where Lanas Tog asks her who granted Baaljagg her "gift". Lady Envy replies by saying:

"A misguided sibling who'd thought he was being kind."

She always refers to the person has her "sibling" afterwards, so it may have been a typing error.
Avoid being seen as racist by saying, "I'm not a racist, but ..." prior to making a racist comment.

Therein may have lain my fault/idiocy :p

I assumed that the Lady Envy would speak with upper class coloquialisms. I may have taken 'sibling' to mean the same as 'cousin' (or 'cos') does.

However enough of dwelling on my many and varied faults.

I take the syntax of the quote to mean 'one of baaljag's siblings' (well: one of fanderay's siblings) not one of the lady envy's siblings. And when I did so I assumed the sibling of fanderay's in question was krul.

Sorry, I don't have the orginal and in my translation it is brother. So it might have been Spite.
Although I know that the translator usually checks thigs like that with Erikson or some other knowlegable person. In Polish you usually have to define gender of a person, so they have to ask.

It for sure isn't K'rul - he would be her uncle.
Or maybe their family relations are even more twisted then we think:
He's her brother.
Uncle.
Brother.
Uncle.
:p :p

The Elder Gods call each other brother and sister. Draconus calls K'rul brother in MOI. Nightchill calls them both brothers in MOI. I guess at Family Draconus gatherings the father would batter on about "My brother K'rul......"

And his daughter picked up on that.

In circumstances like these, I go with the copy in the author's original language. Then I pretend I win and gloat about it for hours, regardless of my answer's validity. But I think it's a mis-translation.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

The relevant bits are on the wiki :p

I go along with the brothers and sister thing, the Elder Gods appear to call themselves.

Quote

A misguided sibling who'd thought HE was being kind. Alright, perhaps that was too simplistic an answer. MY sibling had found the godess terribly damaged by the Fall, and needed a warm-blooded place to lay her spirit, so that it could heal. Serendipity. The ay's pack was dead, whilst she herself was too young to survive in normal circumstances. Worse yet, she was the last left on the entire continent.

HE indicates male, and MY means Envy's not Fanderay's.
So you can say it means Envy's brother, rigth?

Although it could just be an expression - just as brother and sister doesn't always mean family.

I also used to be under impression it was K'rul, that's why I was so suprised when I reached that part. With all that calling each other brother/sister thing the Elder Gods do I just assumed Envy would think about K'rul as uncle (if anything).

Didn't we see from the wolf's PoV that last Ay being rescued? I think it was a vision Baaljagg gave Toc. I'm certain the figure who saved Baaljagg was female.
Edit: nope, my mistake.

The scene:

Quote

Then, standing before her, a figure. Cowled, swathed in roughly woven black wool, a hand - wrapped in leather straps, down to the very fingers - reaching out. [...] The touch, Toc realised, of an Elder God. And a voice:You are the last, now. The very last, and there will be need for you. In time...

No sign of gender. The straps are probably a clue. Anyone remember any other God being referred to as wrapped in leather straps?
Another point: Elder God. Envy and Spite are Draconean Ascendants, not Elder Gods. Nor was Sheltata Lore an Elder God.

Trying to get a timescale, this God started searching for a soul for Baaljagg not that much time after the Tellan Ritual, and found the soul of Fanderay after the Fall. Sheltatha Lore had her kids with Draconus and was imprisoned long before that, but when she was imprisoned Sukhul Ankhadu and Menandore spoke only of Envy and Spite as her children, so I think we can be sure Envy has no brother by her. As hs been said, might just be a figure of speech, referring to Elder Gods as her 'siblings', or it could be a child of Draconus, perhaps by Tiam, since that seems quite popular in the extended family.

Could just entirely be a 'brother by another mother' thing. Envy and Spite are Draconus and Sheltana/Dusk's kids. Which means ANY child of either Dusk or Draconus by anyone else qualifies.

PLUS the whole EG's refer to each other as siblings thing.

So the field is pretty wide open.

- Abyss, cousin by another great-aunt.

Well the definition of sibling is that they have one (or more) parent in common, which would suggest that the sibling would be a child of draconus and someone else, as I don't think sheltatha would have had the chance to have another child...

However the fact that the touch was that of an Elder God, means that the person was an elemental force or some such and not a child of an elder god, so could not in fact be a sibling of Envy... all in all the term seems to have been used rather loosely...

Personally I think the hooded figure must be K'rul, the only description we have of him is of a hooded black robed individual, and he is the only Elder God who was active and working with Envy at the time...
