What's bringing the bittersweet? For those messed up grooves that are somehow still making happy

I was wrong about AR/VR not having any major immediate applications for me: it can already do what Lumi does (light up keys to indicate correct keys or whether you're playing keys correctly and in time when learning piano). Oculus Quest 2 VR is adding a pass-through mode for AR that's going to support these soon. They're arguably better than Lumi because they can also display the notes to come when you're memorizing a piece (or playing live...):

VR/AR should also be helpful for viewing/moving through 3D graphs and mathematical visualization. At the least it's like having maximal screen size and unlimited windows. Not sure about eye strain relative to ordinary monitors.

Surely you mean Meta Quest 2 VR.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

Yeah that's definitely bringing the bittersweet. (Which I do love more... the lost alliteration or the dream of VR/AR?)

Early BF sale on high-speed external SSD (51% off and 10% back) so I bought it.

Have until mid January to return so can change my mind (provided I don't open it at least (and nothing terrible befalls it...)). Could sell out....

AR piano seems to accomplish the main thing I want from Lumi, with the exception of polyphonic aftertouch and keys with pitch bend---but a higher-end keyboard (Osmose) is being released this year that apparently does both those better than Lumi along with better build quality and additional features. And if successful a cheaper version of Osmose without the built-in synth will probably be released before too long. But if Lumi fails, Roli might go out of business, and Seaboards might stop being produced, so that once the supposedly irreplaceable batteries in my Seaboards expire, I'll be left bidding exorbitant sums on eBay for more... or my thousands of hours of practice will have been wasted.

'Lumi feels like keys, Seaboard feels like... [grin...] skin!' lol. More like, yeah. Can't really see the multicolor light-up keys in that video---which could be interesting in a live performance context (especially since the Seaboards are hard to see in the dark). Though I think I can already do that sort of thing to an extent with my Lightpad Block (same company) and... programmable LED lights (including that Razer mask if I ever manage to buy one).

If I do learn to play conventional piano layout I'd rather get:

$1079 for Osmose is a bit pricey though (or so I tell myself, then buy five $300 things before deciding to buy the $1000 thing---as I did this year with microphones)... if the budget version is around $300 I'll probably buy it (maybe BF next year...).

I just learned I am the highest paid employee at my office. It's bittersweet because that means there is probably very little room to continue to grow my salary in this place. I like my job, I think it's interesting and challenging and I have enormous freedom to chose my own projects and generally run my day as I want. At the same time, I always keep an eye on my salary and how I can continue to climb that particular ladder. I dunno, maybe it's time to seriously look around for something new.

Do you have a salary ceiling you'd find comfortable to work til you retire with? Some goal in mind of how much you'd like to make each month to live comfortably and well?

My wife is in the same boat, she's the top end union scale paid for her position/career in the hospital she works at. Without room to grow she feels a bit stagnated and might shift out at some point to climb higher.

Had our first official meeting in the new logistics department that will be rolled out over the next 6 months.

Had a conversation with one of the people I know at the Central library, who says I'm a shoe in for the Team leader position I'm shooting for. So all I have to do is not piss off the boss of bosses.

But then they did their presentation and quickly skipped past the slide that says there's going to be 10 people covering 7 libraries in my district.

Suddenly their vision for a new, more qualified, team of specialists shatters and I realize I'd be leading the librarian equivalent of the retail store I used to work at. Not enough money for wages compared to the amount of daily work. Only now, instead of a group of teens and twenty something you can push to work their ass off, you've got a work force that's on average around 55 years old or older.

Can't wait for the meetings where I'll have to ask Ingeborg, the ancient crone that knows all things in the 9 realms of the old gods, who's bones are hollow and smells like ash, to work faster or she will get flogged.

See if they'll let you hire robots? (Before too long I hope....)

External SSD arrived today along with four other packages---was thinking so long as I don't open the box and don't let it get wrecked I can return it, so I really wanted to avoid dropping it. Attendant in the mail room tried to hand me several packages at once and a thin envelope dropped and hit the floor---but it was so small and seemed so flimsily padded I assumed it was the sponges. Got back to my apartment and opened it just to make sure. No, it actually was the SSD. If it doesn't work I could still probably return it, since the box appears undamaged. Worst case scenario would be if 1. it wasn't working as well as it should, but I didn't realize it, and 2. it stopped working right after the return window closed. Then I remembered that some high-end SSDs that have things like 'Extreme Pro' or whatever in the title are supposed to be extremely rugged---which could also explain the paucity of padding (especially for something that usually costs $460). So I checked the product details and luckily it is supposed to be able to endure falls of up to 2 meters---the attendant was tall (probably still is) but it wasn't 2 meters up in the air when it fell. So I'm glad it's almost certainly okay, but I'm annoyed with myself for having failed at the one simple task I had---don't drop the damn package... at least not the important one!

I make more than my parents, and they seem very comfortable, so it's not so much a retirement thing. Rather, I find the salary a strong motivator, like a game almost I suppose. If I do good work in the right way I can turn that into another increase. I might have played too many RPGs in my life.

I do give some thought to retirement though, as my very first job out of law school was working in a pension insurance company. It became clear to me that our generation is fucked when it comes to retirement rights, we have to fund the previous generations' pension bonanzas after all. So I figured the higher I can push my salary when I am young (ish), the better the end result will be.

Ah yeah, that makes sense for sure.

So, I went to the interview today. Won't get an answer from the new leader before tomorrow or the day after.

I'm not sure how the interview went.

I felt I had the right answers to their questions but I could tell from the circular way we discussed topics like dealing with poorly performing employees and discipline, that there was some answer they were looking for they didn't get. Not sure if they just wanted to gauge my willingness to be hard on the little old ladies.

Actually had a sort of bad feeling about the whole thing afterwards. Like I'm not sure I really want the position after all. I got this weird vibe from them. Like this is going to be more gruelling than fun. That they expect the Team leaders to work their ass off and potentially get demoted 12 months from now. If I get the position I'll need to have a serious talk about my wage and benefits.

If there is one thing I've learned over the years it is to trust your gut feeling after an interview. Even if the final outcome ends up different than you thought, the feeling is always right.

Not mine. My gut has shit for brains.

I’m completely swamped with work, which is awesome. On the other hand, I’m completely swamped with work.
I've always been crazy but its kept me from going insane.

That's what I'm fearing. On the other hand I'm desperate to add something extra to my CV just in case they close half the libraries in Copenhagen and turn them into 7/11s. A Team leader position is a stepping stone to getting close to the Central library.

Agree with Mez - there's always a reason you come out of an interview with a bad vibe, even if you can't articulate it at the time.

It was probably the electro bio-mechanical neural transmitting zero synapse repositioner. Trust me, I've watched at least two Men in Black films, I know what I'm talking about.
Yesterday, upon the stair, I saw a man who wasn't there. He wasn't there again today. Oh, how I wish he'd go away.

Just because the bad feeling is right, doesn't mean you have to say no when they offer it to you. You just go in with your eyes wide open and won't be disappointed when you have the realisation moment that aspects of the role are shit.

Because realistically most jobs that pay more also come with aspects that are shit, otherwise they wouldn't have to pay more money for people to do them.

Thanks for the feedback.

Got the call yesterday. The job is mine and I was their first pick for the two new openings (At least that's what they're telling me). Had a 15 minute talk about some of my feelings and my future boss was glad I voiced those concerns and in turn I was promised we'd work with making the position as motivating as possible, with as much input as possible. Which is what I really wanted since we're building a new department from scratch.

Like you guys said above, I think that the scariest part is leaving the place I started, because my current work place is awesome. Lots of freedom and a very easy going culture. From the stories I've heard around town, it definitely wont be like that some places I'll be visiting - But I can work to change that.

Next year is going to be busy.
