Thinking about getting a new microwave oven and toaster. Been using the ones I have for some time now and I've noticed some degradation in evenness and over all decline in quality. Since its been awile, what "gotchas" should I consider? I know we are in the brave new world of "internet of things" and I imagine I can get options that will allow me to automatically upload pics of toast or microwaved dinner to IG. I don't need any of those schmaltzy options. Just needs to do the job reliable, quality result and have a long life of use. Thoughts? Suggestions?

Is the microwave the above the stove kind or the counter top kind?

Do you want a 2 slice or 4 slice toaster? Does it matter what color?

Counter top for microwave, and I don't want a family sized one, that would be too big. 4 slice for toaste, and would be nice if it could handle bagels, but most importantly, has to do sliced bread to meet expectations. Sometimes when a toaster can do various thickness, it does them all, but not well, if you know what I'm saying. Color just in muted tones is fine. White would probably work, but not too hung up on the color, as long as it isn't garish and obviously clashes with the feng shui.

I'm pretty sure that's what the dial is for. :p

From what I can tell on Consumer Reports (my mother is a member), a 4 slice Cuisinart is fine for the toaster.

For microwaves, Panasonic seems to have several highly rated mid size counter tops. They range from low 200s to mid 300s.

Have the 4 slice Cuisinart toaster. All good, 5 years plus, zero problems.

...well there was that time I used it for an impromptu heat ray but that was hardly a problem....

Follow-up.

Go this sorted some time back. My sister sent me a microwave her and family had in their bar setup in the rec room that never got any use. So pretty much good as new microwave for free. Can't beat that with a stick.

And I bought a standard Cuisinart toaster. It functions as expected, but I sort of wish I would have got this beaut. May have to trade up. Price is too steep though. I'm not sure I could justify splurging on that.

Oh you bastard.

That's been added to my gadgets note. Not sure what I want more now, a Balmuda or a nice counter top induction hob

Anyone have a bidet at home? Like or not?

Have used them in Italy and Nepal. They're great and it's sheer laziness that's preventing me from replacing our toilet with one that has a built in option.

There's ones that do warm. Even with cold, it's not bad at all. You'll get used to it very quickly and it doesn't get cold cold in LA.

Used the fancy Japanese toilet tech when I was over there! Absolutel mystery why it’s not standard the world over. I suspect we could save a lot of tress.

Toilet paper lobby is probably to blame

Saw an ad the other day for one that you just fit over your seat. I’m extremely interested in trying it out but I have fear I’d hit the ceiling once that cold water hits the target. It didn’t say anything about instant warming options.

I have one that sits underneath my toilet seat. It is the type that can be retrofit into any toilet. I highly recommend it. My butthole feels fresh, clean, and is never chafed. It's a surprisingly great feeling.

Unfortunately, mine doesn't spray warm water. That would be a great bonus if it did.

I experienced one like that at a hotel a few years ago. Functionally it was great, but it must have been retrofitted from a standard issue toilet and by the time all the extra attachments had been made it looked somewhat like an old dentists chair with a hole in the bottom. Had a cringy feeling about people stabbing my gums with pointy metal things while I was doing my business every time I had to use it.

So we're moving house in the next few weeks and we need to buy a fridge freezer for the new place. Never bought one before as the one we have in this place is integrated.

We haven't been able to go back to measure up due to lock down so asked the current owners to measure the space for the current fridge freezer. They said;

"600mm wide x 440mm deep (this is the dim for the feet of the fridge as it will sit on a plinth – the door can extend further) x 2010mm high."

Now I can't figure out what size fridge freezer we should be buying. 440mm deep seems very shallow, and I have little to no idea on what door depth would be. Do I buy whatever depth size as we're not fussed about sticking out? Bit worried about if it's too deep and it's on a plinth and it tips out...

A forum sanity check or any advice would be be appreciated.

We're not wanting to spend too much as we may remodel in the long term, but still want to get good quality. We tend to use Which? For most purchases but a lot of what they suggest seems to be out of stock argh.

Your numbers mean nothing to me since i'm a savage. But there is usually 2 depths of fridge. Standard. And also what they call "counter depth". They're not actually the same depth, or sit flush with the counter, but they dont stick out as far as a normal fridge. They can be handy in smaller kitchens or kitchens with narrow walkways.

A lot of manufacturers are still really behind due to the shutdowns for covid.

In old money;

23.5 inches wide by 17.3 inches deep by 79 inches tall.

I think my anxiety is all around it being on a plinth and whether that means if I buy too much deeper than the gap then it could topple. I suppose I could take a saw to the plinth and cut it out. :/

So what you want to pay attention to is "where are the feet?"

If the fridge you're looking at has feet that extend past the platform, then you're going to have to make a choice between different fridge or changing the platform. If the feet are within the bounds, then you're golden.

Aye sounds about right. The problem is that I'm likely going to need to buy remotely as nothing is open... and websites don't seem to detail that kind of thing, which I can sort of understand!
