Hi all,
I bought myself a 3D Printer a few months ago, and now that I've got a pretty good handle on how it works, I'm looking for a big project for it...

MALAZAN CHESS

I will sculpting the pieces in Zbrush then printing them.

What I'm looking for is some suggestions/help of how it would work.
Do I go for specific characters or a more generic Malazan theme, i.e Edur V Letherii, Bonehunters V Nah'ruk, Chain of Dogs... (Just typing these out, I kinda want to do them all...!)
Rejoice. For very bad things are about to happen

This sounds epic would love to print some nobbs sculptures.

I think either would work, perhaps a crippled god (all of high house chains would make good visuals) vs shadowthrone (drawing in various malazans as his unwitting pawns) would work for a more general malaz theme

With Kallor as Queen, obviously.

Just thinking, I could nearly do a couple of sets for each book, with the amount of battles and factions to choose from:)

Do you have a printer?
When I'm done I was going to put the files online somewhere, probably Thingiverse, for people to print themselves.

Yeah I have had a Prusa Mk3 for a year or so now, I've been mainly using it to print dnd mini's and boardgame mods.

Let me know when you put them up on Thingiverse will definitely try some!

How have you found the sculpting process? Do you try and design stuff that can be printed supportless or with supports?

I've done a lot of printing of fine detail stuff and anything that can be printed without supports usually ends up looking a lot better FYI, but does put more limitations on the design!

Nice. I was tossing up between getting the Prusa and X1.
I have only sculpted one thing so far specifically for printing. (A dragon head to be used as a handle for a lid) But that needed support. I have printed a couple of older sculpts, they needed supports as well.
I'll be trying to design the chess pieces supportless. Definitely makes it easier.

That's a great idea Posted Image

Letherii vs Tiste Edur seems like a easy case for the different figures.
Maybe King Ezgara and Rhulad, Queen Mayen and Janall, Rook Brys and Fear, Knight Gerun Eberict and Trull, Bishop Kuru Qan and Hannan Mosag.

Andii versus Liosan
Laseen did nothing wrong.

I demand Telorast & Curdle plushies.

Finally a bit of progress on this
Decided on the sides from the beginning of GotM
This is a rough list of what I'm thinking. Open to all suggestions, if you can think of anyone better,
especially on the malazan side and maybe a better idea for the rook than Moon's spawn

K - Anomander
Q - Brood
B - Kallor/K'azz
KN - Korlat/Orfantal (as dragons)
R - Moon's Spawn
P - Crimson Guard/Rhivi/Mott Irr. etc

K - Laseen
Q - Lorn?
B - Tayshrenn/Tattersail
KN - Twist/Toc (quorl/horse)
R - Whiskeyjack/Dujek
P - Bridgeburners

This is a first pass of the look I'll probably be going for

Anomander looks good CN. Great to get an update on the project Posted Image

I like the setup of the Malazan side.
King - Leader
Queen - Ace/Shaved knuckle
Bishop - (High) Mages
Knight - Riders/Dragons
Rook - Generals
Pawns - Soldiers

Works well with the current charecter. A setup with Dujek as King for the Genabackis Campaign would also be an idea, but I currently don't have all the positions filled in my head.

For the Andii:
K - Anomander
Q - Silanah
B - Brood and Serrat (It is a bit of a stretch, but both are using magic, so I would count them as mages)
KN - Korlat, Orfantal
R - Kallor, K'azz

I think Kruppe and Iskaral Pust on mules would make great knights!
