I'd say those events in this book since it was published so much earlier and actually by Erikson. KR was by Esslemont

Don't forget, they had gamed a lot of these elements way before the books

The journey of the 3 Teblor is sometimes reminding me a bit of the journey of the 3 Thel Akai in.... what was it? FoL?

Anyone else think so?
Nor majorly but there seem to be certain similarities

The players in the whirlwind camp are a bag of shit too.
Sudden outrage from L'oric upon discovering what has happened Felesin younger. You all knew what Bithidal was about, and has been doing to countless nameless children. He is needed? At what cost you bunch of fucking monsters.

I contrasted their indifference of pre/ascendents in the camp versus Cotillions retention of humanity.

I wondered whether it's a case of have a broader scope of what they are thinking about so think less about these things, but that disregards people as things...

I think it's probably also arrogance that they would sort it just I time.

Karsa suplexing a degeroth is pretty awesome.

I'd forgotten that Shai'k was Onrack's spurned mate and that Onrack and Kilvana are Adam and Eve.

Just finished up book 3 last night, not sure when I'll get more reading done.

I forgot how fabulously arrogant the Liosan were, looking forward mightily to their beating an ignoble retreat.

Drift Avalii annoys me. Cots shows up and tears the Edur to fucking shreds, Darist and the Malazans did not have to die in any shape or form.

Yeah there isn't any stricture on where ascendents get involved except to drive plot. See Darist and Felisin.

The Liosans were the great comedy plot line for this Do they ever get properly fleshed out in the series? I only remember FOD/FOL but that's hardly a sympathetic/understanding portrayal such as other races get throughout the series.

I couldn't get past 10% in FoL so can't comment.

Went on down a rabbit hole on tvtropes and found this on House of Chains

Real Life Writes the Plot: As with the rest of the series, certain parts of the book were played out as roleplaying game campaigns first. In this book, per This example contains a TRIVIA entry. It should be moved to the TRIVIA tab.Word of God, most of the Karsa Orlong segment in the first part was taken from such a section, where Steven Erikson deliberately distorted the descriptions to the detriment of the person playing as Karsa. Eventually, the player got fed up and, in a moment of frustration, decided to attack an important character who was just introduced. Thus, the scene where the Tiste Edur on Silanda are killed was created, setting the stage for their appearance in Deadhouse Gates.

Does anyone know if this is true. I'm not surprised just not certain of its truth.

The opening to Chapter 8 when Cuttle and Fid--Strings recognize each other and whip the legion into shape is satisfying.

When discussing the Scorpion games, bottle is worried about the birds bit and fid has to reassure him.

Bottle has an affinity with animals and would surely have tried to borrow with the birds bit, how does he not know??

Did the Adjunct sacrifice the 300 Seti to give her the chance to properly maul Leomans raiders?

When Kalam meets up with Sinn and Kindly, and releases an Azalan demon:

There was something about all those shadows in the demon's possession...

Any ideas what was up with those shadows?

EDIT: Are people falling off on their reread goals? GOTM and DG generated a lot more discussion...

I'd expect so. She makes a comment to Gamet later about the burden of command and sacrificing men being part of the job.

I kind of feel like House of Chains is more straightforward and less loose ends?

It's never really held in high as a regard as a lot of other books. And it is a bit more linear in its tale.

I imagine MT will generate a lot

Personally I've gone on a video game binge so I might first catch up late in the month.

I just finished last night. It had been years since my last reread (think I read 1-8 before the release of DoD, so 10 years) so I sped through this one.

In the recent podcast for DG, Erikson spoke about religion and how the upcoming Karsa trilogy will have a religion built around Coltaine. It seems clear from the early parts of this book, retracing the Chain of Dogs, that he and anyone involved in the Fall are venerated. It will be interesting to see how this changes to worship 10 years following TCG.

Anyway, really enjoyed this. Karsa’s parts were great and I enjoyed his growth from 1 dimensional slaughterer of “children”, the forming of the Bonehunters and Fiddler / Stormy / Gesler’s role in that, the convergence in Raraku, etc. I do like how the epilogue of Trull beginning to tell his tale leads into the MT prologue of his shorning. It’s a nice touch.
