The CVS advertisement inserted into my newspaper (yeah, I'm one of those, I read a physical newspaper) had on the front all things hoard-able - toilet paper, bleach, laundry detergent, hand santizer, vitamins and other snake oil that is supposed to "boost your immune system" ... ohhh Emergen-C! That's gotta be good, I'll take that and then strip naked and jump into the ball pit at a McDonalds Play Place. For fucks sake, always trying to find the way to profit as a society aren't we.

Man my niece is pitching a bitch cause mine have a month off at present compared to her 2 weeks at present. Such is the mind of a 9 yr old though. Hell I doubt most kids will even really recall this event ten or so years from now unless reminded on the news.
I’m astounded by my 180 this past week.

This is going to be the two months that kills the restaurant business in the US. Rent is going to be a very big deal for millions.
I think upwards of five figures of deaths will be recorded if this social distancing does not work.
This is a Hurricane Katrina level thing for most of the country. It's that bad.

Just about every independent movie theaters are about to go out of business. Kids who are food insecure are going to have a real hard time with the school shut down. Parents are going to have to provide child care somehow and that's difficult with a full time job that may not allow work from home.
This isn't going to be a blip for millions of real people. It would be nice if all the kids barely remember this in ten years, but I don't think it's going to go that way.

I was in high school when SARS happened.
I don't recall anything out of the ordinary.
I barely even remember the Blackout, tbh.

In terms of publicly confirmed cases alone (as of March 11), COVID-19 is already 15x bigger than SARS. There's five times the number of deaths too.
This is much bigger than the blackout and SARS combined. And that blackout was the second biggest in history at that point. It lasted a few days for most people, but some didn't get power back for two weeks.

My 27 year old Roomate who has never owned a credit card and seems financially illiterate seems excited by the prospect of his restaurant closing down and him getting a holiday. I have a strong suspicion that he hasn’t quite thought through the consequences, like paying his rent.

That is some big ole text. But it's kind of interesting in that the gacha game I play is headquarted out of HK, they had a week of everyone self isolating and now they're largely back in their office as normal.
Which is good because A) they are safe and Mama Imoko can get pics of the office cats for the discord.
Meanwhile, Boris becomes Farquaad.

My work have never let support staff work from home and there's a half department trial this week to see how it will work. My journey into work this morning was eerily quiet.

The going comment here in Ontario is that no one is listening...some are social distancing, but far too many people are out and about acting like nothing is wrong, and st paddys is in two days...so the rumour is that the govt is about to shut us down to force people to listen and isolate.
We will see. I don't know if my govt has the stones to do it...but the alternative is acceptance of infection numbers like Europe.

Just been told by my manager that I am to work from home because my wife is a health care worker, and thus is "first line". So that will be a new experience, as I've never worked from home before.
Now to see how I'll manage with the kids running around as I try to work.

Boris Johnson's understanding of this is either so ridiculously low or evil. There's a confirmed case of reinfection in Japan - so people can get this multiple times.
Herd immunity isn't a thing with this one. Stay home. Picking up the pieces of a broken life is better than killing someone or dying yourself.

Luckily I bought The Beast in January. Otherwise I would be having much the same issue! Are you still at IM?

Tell work to get you a laptop if they want you to work from home.
How many fucking people do I have to hammer in order to get that across.
