I engaged in a hand breaking ritual last for 1st time in a while. It was wonderful even though my still healing ring finger would have preferred I not done so. I discreetly went and washed my hands afterwards. Repeated all about 2 hrs later
WTF? The mind boggles.

Thinking about it, I can only recall one in the last few months.

700 cases in Ontario today, 340 of which are in Toronto....in case anyone wondered about the special hell that is my city during this pandemic. We were under 500 yesterday and under 100 a mere 2 weeks ago....

Man, the amount of people who are bitching that they might close gyms again in this city is STAGGERING. It shows you how much some people have literally tied their mental health to a goddamn business. Capitalism man.
One dude said that he's been a gym rat for like 15 years and that when they closed down gyms in the first wave that he "slid into a very dark place"...like holy shit man, if all that stands between you and your own internal fucking demons is a business that lets you work out in their warehouse...that's a bad thing that may require a much larger intervention.
My gods.
I DO have one friend who was a gym person who found ways to get outside and do various things to fill that void in the interim...that's what people should be doing, but the amount of people that I see talking about gyms-being-life to an almost vitriolic level (like really railing about it) is...pretty nuts.
Do gym people really tie their entire well-being to a company that charges them money to visit to get that well-being? Like honestly?

Or the sheer endorphin rush that they can 'only' get from putting their muscles under stress in that way. When I was really into weight lifting I couldn't get that feeling any other way.
I can sympathesise with them but they could be like your friend. Coming off that rush can be harsh though, especially if they went cold turkey.

I can certainly say that swimming is my zen time. The 3 months the pools were closed, I was growing far more irritable and more likely to be overwhelmed with crap.
I would be upset. (eventually, probably vocally) if pools were closed again. Especially with winter coming, where even going for a walk to get some fresh air and clear the mind is gonna become an undertaking.

Ah, okay, good to have some insight into the level of clutch people have to gyms and such.
I don't think that's healthy mind you, but I can understand it a little more.

I coped without the gym and exercised at home (my PT gave us all virtual sessions throughout the time the gyms were closed) but I'm definitely someone who needs physical activity to keep her mood in check, so I can understand people taking it hard if that's their principle way of being active.

It's probably not the greatest thing; but I really appreciate the sensory deprivation. That's not something you can easily do at home. Even lying down in a dark room for some down time (which is something I can still pull off from time to time due to my parents both being essential workers and still going to work) isn't nearly the same.
There's (obviously) a lot of perks to working from home; but there's also something oppressive to waking up practically at your workplace, and then relying on the same screen for your after-work entertainment.
Stuff like gym, pool, going for walks--it's all that "mental downtime" that comes with change of scenery. If you've got family that demands your attention I can see it not being such a big deal, but that's not everyone.

Oh absolutely! And we've been walking and running trails since the beginning of this to try to keep active. I wholeheartedly agree with the physical activity for mood and mental health ect.
I think my stumble is more about gyms and the vehemence when people in my city talk about gyms closing down again basically like it's endgame for their moods. Does Goodlife Fitness have that much sway over people? Or is it access to equipment?

Thats what it seems to be. Okay, well that explains it, but man I would not want a company to have that much pull over me because they can afford the equipment.
Thanks everyone for your input!

ok buddy as someone with his own mental health issues... working out is one of the most effective ways of managing that shit. When you are used to working out a lot, not working out means you body isn't producing endorphins the way it usually is. Given how prevalent mental health is, most people are on a very fine threshold and a global pandemic on top of loosing gym is enough to sway you down a very dark path.
There are multiple reasons why people "need" gyms in their life to have their sanity.
1) Its part of a routine, and part of that routine is going to a place to get it done. Some people can do all their work and workout from home no issue but others need a special place to go to so they focus on doing that.
2) As mentioned before, equipement. Much of the equipement at gyms is very expensive. That isn't to say you can't work out at all on your own from home but theres a lot of specialised machines that are amazing for you (assisted pull up machine is one of them) that most people dont have the budget for. Standard price for a single dumbbell is 2-3$/lbs. If you're just buying 5s no issue... but if youre the guy that works out with 30s 35s and 40s.... that gets really pricey real fast. There are alternatives like bands that are cheaper but that brings me to point 3.
3) Most dont have the cash flow for a personal trainer. Most people settle into a few different routines and knowing what you do and don't need in your routine can be tricky so most people don't have the knowledge to re tool their routine.
4) For some people the ritual of the gym is your zen time... you're not at home with your kids or family or other distractions, and at the gym the focus is you. Its very helpful in terms of self centering to have a place to go to.

I've managed to stay reasonably active, but yeah, I miss fncking Goodlife WAY more than I expected to.
