I agree, what with the size of the Malazan Books, and the video game releases this year, I can't imagine committing to a second book club.

I wonder if I could squeeze in the Bauchelain and Korbald Broach books as well some where.

Is there an established B&KB reading order in relation to the rest of the series? Do certain books correspond to or spoil certain events in the Main series?

Publication order generally, but if you poke around people have bothered to place them in order viz the MBF. The novellas really do stand apart tho', so it amounts to knowing , vaguely, what B&KB were doing before they show up in MOI

Opened it up this morning, that cast list hit me like a blast from the past.

I noticed from the acknowledgements that he wrote it from a cafe rouge from Dorking, which I've been in a time or two. Getting a bit of small world syndrome.

Read the prologue and it implies Daddy Paran died because of Ganoes disappearance, and then mommy Paran as a result of that. Implies that the bargain with Hood in GotM is for Daddy Paran to go in place of Ganoes.

I think that will always be debatable. I'm more inclined to think he died of natural causes to get him out of the story, while Felisin is stabbed like Ganoes was, and could be described as a more apt 'replacement' for Hood - a death more tragic/meaningless. Taking the life of someone old and possibly on the way out anyway doesn't seem to balance quite as much as Felisin - and the way she went was tragic and early, and if only she'd had her visor up, it wouldn't have happened which makes it worse.

If Hood was completely impassionate... but he gets woke later so who knows, could be he accepted an "unequal" death exchange in order to make sure some events played out the way they did

Felisin having Dryjna leave her vulnerable at a critical moment; her helm still on; Tavore never seeing her... really, really bad luck too.

Coltaine's first war council is argh... brilliant.

Bult's jokes weighed with lots of imperial history and Dujek's onearm, Sormo's arrival, Rel's brutal dismissal and then Bult's defence of the empress. So much good stuff to pick over.

Finished the first two chapters today.

So much set up in the first two chapters.

And some of it deeper than just this book. The scope of the series and planning (timeline and GotMisms aside) always staggers me. But now that I'm reading it with the eye of looking out for this stuff.

The portends of the apocalypse, that Duiker and Sormo witness. We're told there it will be the Paran sisters facing off. And how it will end. A these things, I've reread this book countless times but never with a critical eye like I am trying now. I hope I can keep myself disciplined to do this and not just get sucked into another page turning reresd

So. If Baudin hadn't shielded Felisin on Silanda, would she have been 'tempered' by the fire like the others? Gained 'almost ascendant' level powers? Because they would have really helped her later. Kinda unlucky!
