I've got to say I disagree with you on this QT (that never happens!).

We wouldn't be US if we didn't occasionally disagree! ;)

The first thing we ever see in the book is the ice zombies attacking,

The first thing we see being a catalyst for the "thrones" portion of the story doesn't mean that it has to be a big bad though.

and yeah, the series is called Ice and Fire and the Night King (+mysterious force of Others in the book) is pretty clearly the Ice part of that equation.

I'm fairly sure that people are set on the 'Ice' being Jon and the 'Fire' being Dany....OR the Ice AND Fire both being Jon (because he's Stark AND Targaryen). I've never heard someone claim that the Ice is a reference to the Night King or the White Walkers.

Oh ffs.

'There is ice and there is fire. Hate and love. Bitter and sweet... Winter and summer. Evil and good. Death and life. Everywhere, opposites. Everywhere, the war.[7]'

—Melisandre

'He is the prince that was promised, and his is the song of ice and fire' - Rhaegar talking about Jon in Daenerys's vision. The PtWP is part of the Azor Ahai prophecy to defeat the Great Other / in show presumably the NK.

Well, food problem solved. They can dine on Dothraki horses for years.
Tatts early in SH game: Hmm, so if I'm liberal I should have voted Nein to make sure I'm president? I'm not that selfish

Tatts later in SAME game: I'm going to be a corrupt official. I have turned from my liberal ways, and now will vote against the pesky liberals. Viva la Fascism.
When Venge's turn comes, he will get a yes from Mess, Dolmen, Nevyn and Venge but a no from the 3 fascists and me. **** with my Government, and i'll **** with yours

At this point, Azor Ahai is just a myth.

Not had chance to read through all the arguments but just watched it and wow. Just amazing. That piano music building up for the final 20 minutes or so was astonishing.

I rewatched. Thoroughly enjoyed it, way more a second time.

Didn't really mind about the battle tactics this time, was expecting them to be crappy. Justnenjoyed that light show for what it was - creepy and weird as all those swords went dark.

They did a really good job of showing where everyone was, had some great moments (I loved Tyrion and Sansa) and used a combo of Arya's faceless man skill, the dagger Bran gave her, and the left to right hand knife drop we saw her use against Brienne, all in the same few seconds - at the culmination of an amazing bit of musical score.

Beautifully done.

The Song of Ice and Fire may be a ref to Jon and Dany, but this episode was loaded with parallels from the more literal opposite sides. The whole thing almost seemed orchestrated by Bran; using the subjects/followers of the Lord of Light to each serve their purpose, to bring the NK to Bran, Arya to the NK, and the dagger that started it all to end it at that point.

The NK raised the dead and fought for death; Melisandre raised the dead in opposition to him, using fire and light, and walking out to die right after the NK fell.

Maybe the lord of light and the 3er are one and the same - both him and the NK created to oppose each other in by the CotF.

Pretty sure Bran wasn't just napping.

So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

some truly awful "Hollywood Tactics" at play here.

But an entertaining episode all the same.

Could have done with a few more character deaths though.

I did like that neither Jorah or Beric got any final words - just died.
meh. Link was dead :(

I agree with the stated flaws but I just finished it and it was brilliant. The Dothraki flaming swords going out one by one in the distance was worth the stupid charge.

And now that the Night Kind is properly dead I'm curious if Jaime might want to go back to Cersei. Or if others might go back to her now that she has the numbers. Alright there's not that many left who might defect back but Varys, Jaime and plenty of other houses still to play for. I wonder if Jaime has turned properly good or if now he's seen hell he might just decide to go back to who he loves and fuck the rest. If she'll have him of course.

Cersei can keep her filthy mits off Bear Island though *sob*

I like the way he looked at her hand as she released the dagger, at first it looks like she's dropped it in fear, then when she catches it he's screwed cos his hands are full.

Pretty sure it was him fighting with a spear when Jon was heading to Godswood.

That was thoroughly entertaining. I've accepted a long time ago that the books were massively deviating from the series, so I am not so bothered about the series focussing on King's Landing and Cersei as the finale, even though it doesnt seem to make much sense from a book perspective.

Since the introduction of the NK he always felt a bit too contrived and in-your-face to stand up as the ultimate evil. He felt a bit puppeteered. I am now riding with the theory that Bloodraven/Bran is the true Big Evil. The NK came for Bran, but not to kill him I dont think. Bran 'conveniently' goes walkabouts with his ravens when the battle starts (doing some controlling behind the screens, lad?) And doesnt return until 'victory' seems certain. Not sure how Arya and the dagger (Lightbringer? I guess we always assumed it was a sword but why could it not be a large dagger; the same dagger that started the War of the 5 Kings and that was handed to Arya by Bran in the exact same spot as where she killed the NK) fit in yet, but I am going to sleep on it. Arya as Azor Ahai, I like it.

So now on to Kings Landing, either with a straightforward fight for the Throne in a complete final break with the books, or (as I am still hoping) with Bran and his secret agenda still on course to break the world.
Yesterday, upon the stair, I saw a man who wasn't there. He wasn't there again today. Oh, how I wish he'd go away.

I still think we're going to find out more about the Night Kings motivation before the end. Something with Qyburn, Gregor Clegane and why he's banned from the citadel. There are 3 x 80minute episodes. It's a lot to fill especially when there's only 1 decent army on the continent.

Pretty sure it was synth keys. Did like it, though.

Maybe Bran is like the Crippled God and he has several ploys going on around the world. The NK was one strand, which he has now discarded as it served its purpose. Qyburn and his zombie-making skills are another ploy that will come to the forefront now. Surely if he can animate Clegane, what is there to stop him from animating more dead people?

Nah, idle dreaming. Who am I kidding? Bran in the tv show will be a good guy because they dont really do much convincing double-bluffing since they lost the book backing. So it will be Cersei vs Dany and Jon. Oh well.

Showrunners iirc said they had three 'holy shit' moments when reading GRRM's outline. We're due for the third. (Hopefully....)

[Edit: 'Three ''holy shit moments'' from the story was given by GRRM to the directors. One was Shireen's burning, second is Hodor's name and death and the third “… is from the very end…”'

Yeah saw that but afterwards. Saw Brienne and Jaime and Pod against the wall. Saw Tormund. Didn't see Grey Worm as far as I can tell.

Biggest disappointment is they forgot what made people obsessed with Game of thrones. When they killed Ned Stark no one saw it coming. Where was the main characters plot armour? Hwo could the bag guys win? Now we have a scene where in the entirety of winterfell the only people still fighting with weapon in hand is John, greyworm, pod, Briene and Jaime. The only people shown alive and fighting are the main characters . GRRM was spinning in his miniature painting stool.

Why did Melisandre kill herself in the snow? When she said she would be dead before daybreak I thought she was hinting at the fact that she was sacrificing her life force to light all the dothraki swords maybe. That sort of thing. Instead she just seems to decide her mission is accomplished and walks away.

What was done with all the dragonstone besides spiking the walls. It didnt look like the unsullied had dragonglass spears which would have made their phalanx useful. I think they realised that they made a mistake when they changed the fact that drogaonglass kills the zombies. They should have shooting draggonglass arrows. Otherwise what the hell was the point of the archers? The whole thing kept changing. One minute they are super quick zombies shrugging off blows, snuffing out flame pits (another change, as in the books the zombies light up like tinder) and the next minute slight touches of dragonglass are wiping out giants or flame arrows fired by theon are killing zombies.

I didn't get the idea that Arya disguised herself as a white walker??? Where did she jump from, their were hundreds of zombies around them.

Poor writing that the entire north could only find longclaw, thank the seven samwell stole Heartsbane. Not that it mattered much as in the end the white walkers staid back the entire battle. In fact the Night king risked himself more directly than his lieutenants.

I think you're all nuts. I loved it. Start to finish.

The tactics complaint is a weird one. The tactics weren't supposed to work. That's the point. We are meant to see them losing at every interval. If they succeeded in their tactics (even in smaller increments), then we never get to that point narratively and it robs the show of the desperation (and remember that we are on a schedule to get a lot of shit done and seen....in 80 minutes even this was tight). So yeah, they made mistakes in planning, but it's by design. I don't need some sort of airtight tactics and defense that the bad guys really have to work to overwhelm...the point is they overwhelm. I could give two shits about how that occurred and what mistakes the good guys made to get us there. This isn't a battle they were meant to EVER have the upper hand in. It was a fucking slaughter that would have ended in everyone's death without Theon (YES. Fucking THEON!), and Arya (and the Red Witch)...I felt that from minute one until the end. My wife even said that it's hands-down the greatest 80minutes of TV she's ever watched. It's second place for me (after LOST's S4 ep, THE CONSTANT).

It was never going to go well for them. However the power of the nightking needs to be seen in that even with their defenses and plans he can defeat them. Watching Gregor clegane smash a babies head against a wall doesn't make you fear him, seeing him decapitate a horse with a single stroke of his sword does. The incredibly poor battlefield tactics destroyed my immersion. Felt like winterfell was losing, not that the night kinf was winning.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________

The story has been exciting and fun to watch but I am also now asking what was the point of the story. Why did the nightking reappear now? How has he been a threat for ten thousand years and he was defeated by a dagger? Why did bran need to become the nightking. Where all the prophecies of the prince that was promised pointless? I could see GRRM going that route but here I feel like the writers just dropped the ball. I mean cersei is batshit but at this point does it really matter who rules westeros? At least humanit survives.

EDIT- could the others always raise any dead? I kind of always thought they had to raise the recent dead, people they had killed or their zombies had killed?
