I think what he means is that the point of the trade is that Macaw and I will both have a reason not to attack each other, whereas if we go three ways, one of us will not have that incentive.

No - the card states that you have to destroy a ship during combat. Space Cannon Offense is part of the move phase, and Space Cannon Defense is a separate part of the Invasion phase from Ground Combat.
