an eye of the world movie would be a mistake. there is a script (actually, 2) of chain of dogs. the problem is funding, which i am trying to get around by a careful progression of projects. Ol' frizzy baby pretty much used his friendship with the head of telefilm to prevent any success there, so i must find an alternate route.

Who the heck is "Ol' frizzy baby"? I say we send Rodeo and Abyss around to his place to do some old fashioned "persuasion". :)
If that doesn't work, send Trubiak around dressed as Blake. That'll scare the bejeezus out of anyone! :p

I think its worth pointing out that for several months, this thread had nothing but positivity. There were only those excited for its happenings, and no people whining that it just couldn't be done. I was amazed. You can't have a topic like this and not get people throwing all their negativity into things. This thread is still going strong and still has plenty of support. If you are posting from here on out, please.. consider these points already made, just because it really degenerates the topic when its repeated ad nausium.

1. We all really want it to be what the book is
2. We know changes will have to be made at some level. Compromise.
3. We know completion is a monumental task. Patience.

I'd almost add "other mediums would work great too", but that is a valid discussion I'd say :) Malazan comic line anyone? mm, delicious

Well, I guess this idea of CoD being made into a movie is still being bandied about. I've checked out "The Dark" stuff and it's definitely intriguing. Having been involved in film and film finance on a few occasions I would say that Dark has a much better chance at success. I certainly wish and hope for a CoD film but my experience tempered with realism says otherwise. I mean, what kind of budget are they looking at? The super crap that is "Dungeon Siege" (can't remember the rest of the title) was put together by a Vancouver production company called Brightlight Pictures. This is a fantasy film financed primarily by the old German tax loophole that has been exploited over the past 2 decades and is being cut off (LoTR was mostly funded by this loophole - anyone who says that LoTR was any kind of financial risk is just blowing smoke... which Hollywood finance loves to do i.e "Skycaptain and the World of Tomorrow"; than film cost far, far less than its advertised budget but the distributor was afraid of a ticketsales backlash if they released the true budget. It was, after all, a pseudo-summer action/sfx tentpole).

There are people who have the kind of money that CoD would require, but you'd need a script so solid as it wouldn't even need to convince anyone of its worth, you'd need a director who has an unwavering vision that borders on beligerance to sell the idea as a film, and you'd need a distributor that bought into all these ideas and people. This is not the kind of film that you could just throw financing at and hope to get distribution; we're talking a rather large budget somewhere in the order of 80+ Million dollars. Even with unknowns in the role, this does not begin to address the location shooting, cast size, and FX (unless you've got some sort of proprietory CG process ala Massive or Epic). 80+ Million dollars, for an independent film... How many readers are there of SE's Malazan series? I really have no clue. Worldwide... someone must have these numbers. If the budget's 80M then you're looking at the simple "law of half" for the advertising campaign in order for it to realise its financial potential. So now you're looking at at least 120M. Even if SE has 1 Million readers worldwide (which should make him an international bestseller), and they each saw the film 10x, the thing still would be far short of it's financial green spot.

Take "Hellboy" for example. 60M budget. There are approximately 1 Million readers of that series. Shot in Prague with great makeup and mostly top notch FX (there were definitely some iffy spots). The script wasn't that good but Ron Perlman embodied the character enough to get that film to barely break even in the boxoffice (and that was financed by the then industry's new goldenboy "Revolution Pictures" - "Legendary" and "Walden Media" are quickly making names for themselves as the money powerhouses in the industry). DVD sales were strong, but again, the initial budget was attainable in that it was a somewhat recognizable name (maybe not) and Del Toro had just come off a very recognizable stint as the Blade 2 director (say what you like about that move, but it was one of the only sequels to make more money than it's predecessor). If you can't get or your budget doesn't allow for actor name recognition (there are enough recognizable B-list actors for the price you'd be looking at) you need to rely on director name recognition or producer name recognition to put the joe blow's into the seats.

I guess I'm just trying to add a dose of realism. Dreaming is great and it looks like you've guys have begun to realise that in "The Dark" (smart concept and smart distribution model... now you just need to advertise and promote the thing properly). Look at putting all your energies in to fully actualising that project (it's all about the writing and the acting... writing, it looks like you've got at least that). The FX are truely secondary in a webcast presentation and should be played down as much as possible for the first few episodes IMO. If you guys can create a really good product on time and for cheap, there are quite a few sharks out there that are looking for this type of product to release on the new wave of entertainment.

Good luck.

@vryc...

Thanks for some excellent observations and the dose of realism (which is never far from my mind). I agree, The Dark (right now) stands a far better chance of success than CoD. The concept and distribution models reflect telefilm's inability to finance anything other than what it considers 'canadian'. To wit: despite the fact that everyone involved in every facet of this production is canadian, the head of telefilm's english language televison funding told me himself he couldn't help (not wouldn't; couldn't).

so...the distribution model we came up with was the only way we thought we could do this; we did two episodes to show we were competent to do this (though of course that will either prove or disprove itself mid-august).

The CoD script was written as a personal account of the chain of dogs from duiker's pov (and as such would include some stuff not in the novel). We wrote it with a limited budget in mind, after having researched the latest FX software and what would work for us. (The most important software we learned about was 'Massive', which was used in LoTR for the armies -- and more recently the bud commercial for the World Cup -- and could certainly help us). I'd like to film in Oz (being half australian myself) as I think it would be easiest to film there.

Furthermore, we have at least two other feature films to do before we tackle CoD, so when we get to actually going into development with CoD, I'll be confident of finishing it. And who knows? If the Dark is a runaway success (keep your fingers crossed) we may be able to finance ourselves (yes, a dream right now, but nevertheless something to work towards).

again, thanks for your input.

Telefilm is very wishy-washy with the projects they choose to endorse and fund. It's all extremely political. I loved how they said that they'd only fund "Canadian content" projects. This effectively meant that the story had to be set in Canada in order to receive this government funding. And yet, a few years later, they fund 60% of a pretty quirky sci-fi show "Lexx" in which the only "Canadian content" are the Newfi accents sported by some of the actors (this is absolutely no slight against Newfi's). That whole project was political in how it was financed (Canadian/German co-pro with ties to Alliance Atlantis... had to do with maintaining further opportunites for Canada's largest distributor... all very political and palm-pressing crap).

Well, good luck.

SE... I think.

Anyway, having a twin brother who's a trainee screenwriter and a best mate who's a budding director I have some idea of the difficulties of getting things done (even though they've not had the opportunity to get rejected yet ?_?), so I second good luck.

And am highly curious to see what else you have up your sleeves beforehand...

I'm always pretty wary when they decide to turn a book i love into a film... it's too easy to get it wrong. And even if they don't mess it up the changes neccessary to make it work as a movie always result in me shouting "NOOOO!!! THAT'S NOT HOW IT HAPPENED!" in a crowded cinema.

.... but a little part of me always holds out hope for the time they'll beat whats in my head.
