No, everyone starts with zero. The refresh gains you your max commodities - 2 in your case. You then can't do anything with them except trade them, for instance for other people's commodities, which then turn into trade goods when they're given to you.

Actually gnaw doesn't have anything to trade right now until his next turn so at the end of your turn you still had 2 commodities instead of 2 trade goods.

Actually gnaw doesn't have anything to trade right now until his next turn so at the end of your turn you still had 2 commodities instead of 2 trade goods.

You're right that Gnaw hasn't refreshed yet. So Nom has 1 commodity and 1 trade good (from me).

Having not got involved in trading at all last game, I mentally skipped over all that. But surely Nom has the trade good from me as soon as I give it to him (so it would be available at the beginning of his next go)?

Yes he will have yours and Gnaws at the beginning of his next turn but during his last turn he ended with just commodities. You and Gnaw each will get one from ItwasBliss at the beginning of your turns after you refresh your commodities. The timing is important. I almost took Warfare because of the timing issue when Itwasbliss was thinking of using tech as their first action but then I realized I couldn't trade them anyway as the only people who can trade with everyone regardless of neighbors didn't have any to trade.
