Trailer up
Good trailer in the sense that it doesn't spoil anything, it just teases. Terrible trailer in the sense that it doesn't actually show or even suggest who or what Venom or Eddie Brock is. If I didn't know Venom I would guess Tom Hardy has telekinetic powers? Does he?
Is Tom Hardy even playing Brock? Is this the venom we know? It looks like they're doing a sort of Marvel Alien invasion Avengers connection instead of Spiderman connected.
Well, they definitely got me curious.

It says "teaser" trailer. Operative word: teaser. I'm sure they have a whole marketing campaign with to be released trailers in the pipeline that will give us a peek at Venom eventually. So, not sure what all the hate is relative to not actually showing Venom is a TEASER trailer.
Also the whole "trailers reveal too much" phenomenon is not unique to Malazan Empire. So maybe the backlash from that is pushing the pendulum towards trailers that give you just enough to want to go see the movie and that is it.

And this is the problem.
They are... literally doing a villain origin story, ignoring that Peter's interaction with the symbiote BEFORE it jumps to Eddie is part and parcel to WHY it functions like it does (like allowing Eddie to not be seen/felt by Spider sense)...and hell, why it looks like a beefy, overgrown black Spiderman costume. So they are doing a Venom movie with no Spiderman...and they make a teaser trailer that could be anything else...because you don't get a glimpse of Venom or feasibly understand who Eddie is.
I mean, FFS, this could be the sequel to LIFE for all it shows/illustrates.
Sony NEEDED to show Venom in this teaser, even just a silhouette or outline of him. They need to sell a movie that no one asked for, about a villain without his hero counterpart/catalyst...
That they didn't shows how poorly this has been planned and executed. I mean they only finished shooting a few weeks back as far as I'm aware. To rush out a trailer and have it be this ambiguous? Marketing fail. But I mean marketing fails is what Sony does best.
Marvel and DC can hide stuff and "tease"....because people know they've got the goods. Sony's track record is shit on a stick...showing us Venom in the teaser for their No one Asked for This Venom movie should have been REQUIRED.

How do Sony have the rights to Venom anyway? I thought they just had the x-men?
Yesterday, upon the stair, I saw a man who wasn't there. He wasn't there again today. Oh, how I wish he'd go away.

Sony is Spiderman, Fox was X-Men which is now back at Marvel.
Does Marvel have any input on this film like they will be doing with the future Spiderman films?

AFAIK, no, the deal between Marvel/Sony is Spiderman only - so no Marvel tie ins here.
meh. Link was dead :(

If it's anything like every single other comics-based movie that has come out in the last five years there will be 30 different trailers, TV spots, previews, etc, still to come before this movie actually hits theatres. I think you're jumping the gun a bit saying the movie is ruined just because all of these things weren't in the very first teaser clip.

The wing of Marvel responsible for this is Marvel Entertainment (the wing that handles the comics, and TV properties)...AKA rich old recluse white man asshole Isaac Perlmutter...who doesn't get along with Kevin Feige and Disney-own Marvel Studios to a level that he will vengefully enact things to try to hurt the Marvel brand that the MCU is producing/selling through the Sony arm and their Marvel license (Spiderman).
Future Spiderman films are under a weird side-shot deal between the MCU and Sony, VIA "now-fired" Sony producer Amy Pascal and resident hack Avi Arad....because they have their meaty producer paws in the pie already.
If that makes any kind of convoluted sense.
I doubt that Spiderman shows up in this...I mean UNLESS they get Garfield to reprise HIS Spidey? It won't be Holland, that's for sure.

You will see the same comments in most places about this movie "Who asked for this?" "How do you do a movie with a Spiderman villain and no Spiderman?" as such the marketing needs to be on point, and I think the key to selling it is showing everyone a glimpse.
But I mean, find me a superhero film of the last decade that DOESN'T show a glimpse of SOMETHING in the teaser trailer.
And let's be clear, I personally think this movie was ruined when they decided that a Joker movie would work without Batman (I should clarify that DCEU is doing EXACTLY this [with Joquain Phoenix apparently?]...and I think it's a fail idea too), or a Lex Luthor movie would work without Superman...or...well, you get the point.

Trailer doesn't seem bad just like a big scoop of vanilla pudding.
Probably a good call not to put Venom in the trailer, obviously its the only thing people really give a shit about. Keeping it hidden is the best move for marketing I think.
