I though the laser scope was fairly clever but the bayonet was a bit much.

I'm holding out for a semi-automatic. Less strain on the arms.
Yesterday, upon the stair, I saw a man who wasn't there. He wasn't there again today. Oh, how I wish he'd go away.

I'm not sure I would recognise a garotte if I saw one. I would be wondering why someone had piano fixing stuff with them.

Anyway, Kevin Spacey not guilty. Does that mean we can watch The Usual Suspects again?

Something like 20 people overall came forward with stories about Spacey, and many more said Hollywood industry basically accepted that Spacey along with his pals Bryan Singer, and Gary Goddard would host debauched parties and invite very young (too young to know better) gay youths to and get them plastered and have their way with them.

That people are finding it hard to stick him with consequences some like 10 to in some cases 30 years after the events should not surprise anyone. The standard of proof on sexual assault cases is high, so you either need an airtight case or that person is going to walk.

Sidenote: My information on how Singer behaves/behaved comes from Me (I met him at a party during TIFF before he shot Superman Returns) and an old friend of a friend who was an extra on X-Men. When I met Singer he was hanging on the arm of a VERY inebriated young man who if he was 18, he was a very young looking 18...the young man looked drunk but spaced out too so I assumed drugs of some kind. The friend, again JUST an extra on a set of hundreds (he was 17 at the time), asked Singer for an autograph for my other friend (who loved The Usual Suspects) and Singer basically ignored the production schedule on the film for like an hour while he found someone with a polaroid camera to take a photo of them together instead...when they finally found it, Singer grabbed his ass as the photo snapped.

So no, in no universe do I feel like Kevin Spacey is innocent....I feel like he got away with some sketchy stuff for a lot of years....but that most of it was long enough ago that human memory has destroyed whatever airtight version of events these young men have come forward with.

So this isn't a sexual allegation, it's workplace toxicity/abuse allegation.....but Jimmy Fallon's Tonight Show is apparently a nightmare behind the scenes and Jimmy is the root cause.

https://www.avclub.c...show-1850812874

This is something I think I've come around to thinking recently, I think that many comedians (likely not all, but MANY) use comedy to distract from their deep mental health struggles (and often substance abuse issues) and that really often lurking beneath the surface is someone who can be really funny and REALLY deeply awful and unpleasant.

And it gets worse if you start to think about the people who are like tight friends with these assholes. Like Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are BOTH really great friends with Fallon...so they MUST know of his mood swings and behaviour...and no one says boo about it? This means I have to hold Fey and Poehler accountable for letting their firmed be a shitstain to regular people.

A similar issue I have is with Karen Kilgariff who co-hosts the super popular My Favourite Murder podcast...tight friends with Joe Rogan for decades now....but during COVID she refused to denounce his assholery and misinformation spreading, someone even mentioned it at a show and she got upset that they brought it up.

And the dividing line between the ones who are just assholes and the ones who legit suffer from depression or other maladies...seems to be often suicide. People like Robin Williams, who from ALL reports over the years of his life was reputedly one of the BEST humans and one of the most brilliant comedians...but he took his life (reportedly from depression stemming from some older age ailment he was getting? Not sure)...but hearing that Jimmy Fallon, Ellen DeGeneres, James Corden, and others who had this shiny, happy, nice person facade in the industry are actually pieces of shit who treat those around them poorly...should surprise me, but it doesn't anymore. These days I assume every really funny comedian has one mental health issue or another they are contending with on the daily...and that the good ones are like Robin...a diamond in football fields of roughs.

And honestly, I'm starting to just assume that everyone in Hollywood (by the very nature of the grasping for the spotlight industry it is that FUELS people who like to be the centre of attention) is a shitty person in some way unless they prove they aren't (like Keanu, Chow Fun Fat, and a few others that I've heard nothing but nice stories about)...Hollywood is probably 95% pretentious assholes, and 5% decent humans. And yet these people get idolized and pumped up so they can be even worse assholes.

What many people do not know is that depression was not the underlying cause of Robin’s suicide—rather, it was a little-known brain disease called Lewy body dementia.

In the last year of his life, Robin experienced a startling pattern of behavior. His friends, family, and film colleagues could tell he was not himself as he began exhibiting symptoms like confusion, forgetfulness, paranoia, hallucinations, anxiety, personality changes, and difficulty with movement. Robin could tell something was wrong, too, but he did not know what was happening to him, why it was happening, or how to stop it.

After his death, an autopsy revealed advanced stages of Lewy body dementia

Yeah, I know. Wife works in this area of healthcare, and Lewy body 100% often causes depression when the person afflicted with it knows they are, because it's going to steal their life from them and it's a ticking time bomb and makes you miserable. And people prone to depression of mental health issues are way more susceptible to it returning when they are stressed. We can pretend that Robin's comedy was not sourced from mental health or trauma, but we'd be lying to ourselves becuase there is evidence that he had it before the disease:

"Prior history can also complicate a diagnosis," Susan says, adding that Williams had a history of depression that had not been active for six years, but came back months before he died.

So I dunno, maybe you didn't need to yank that quote out and rebut it without the info? ;)

I was only slightly less lazy than you were in that I didn't read beyond what I quoted from a quick Google search. However, having read slightly more about it he apparently had bipolar disorder, and based on what I remember of his career his comedy can be attributed more to his manic episodes, though you're probably right that his depressive episodes also played a role (perspective and/or attempt at self/society-medicating?):

Quote

Not "Depression": Manic-Depression and Robin Williams

[...] "Depression" is somewhat acceptable; manic-depression is still mostly taboo. Even mental health clinicians[...] downplay or denigrate it.

[...] creativity in mania certainly helps comedians and actors; the mind runs in a million different directions, and new and funny and smart ideas pour out. Williams was a walking manic episode in many of his interviews and skits. Sometimes a person can have mild to moderate manic symptoms all the time, as part of his or her personality, called "hyperthymic" temperament, the opposite of "dysthymic" temperament. In keeping with the stigma and discrimination against bipolar illness, dysthymia is well-known and part of the DSM nosology; hyperthymia was never included in DSM systems, and is little known among mental health clinicians, much less the larger public.

Many persons with manic-depressive illness have hyperthymic temperament all the time – so they're creative and productive and funny, and sometimes famous – and then they have repeated depressive episodes, usually lasting weeks to months, usually happening once a year or two – and, in about one in ten persons, leading to suicide.

So Robin Williams' "depression" should be called what it was: manic-depression.

Also not clear that he was never an asshole. By his own admission:

Quote

His second marriage, to a film producer, ended in 2008 – largely because of his drinking, even though by then he was sober. "You know, I was shameful, and you do stuff that causes disgust, and that's hard to recover from. You can say, 'I forgive you' and all that stuff, but it's not the same as recovering from it. It's not coming back."

And a despicable 50 letters of support to the judge from MOSTLY Scientiolgists/Scientology-adjacent people....that whole ass cult needs to be investigated and shut the fuck down. Every time one of their number get in any kind of trouble, the cult closes ranks around them and lawyers the hell up to avoid punishment or scrutiny.

The Masterson family, like the Ribisi family are Second Generation Scientiologists too, so they are deeper than the average Joe.

Frankly the only reason I think that the top brass wasn't harassing the witnesses in this case as they've done in so many other noted instances in the past when anyone comes for a Scientolgist legally... is that head honcho David Miscavige is in hiding from various lawmakers in the US for his own reasons/crimes and his top priority is not saving Masterson. And if I understand the hierarchy rightly, without Miscavige making calls on this shit, the Sea Org members just continue on as per normal.

Still, glad they threw the book at Masterson...he sounds like he was a fucking nightmare human.

1000%.

Shelly, and David probably knows this, can bring down the whole thing in a heartbeat. It's likely why she's being kept away from everyone and everything. She's seen everything legal and illegal Miscavige and the rest of the Sea Org has done since Hubbard died. She's the only brick they need to pull to bring the whole house down.

Latest article from June of this past year about it.

It's certainly on the table as a strong possibility....but I could also see all her conditioning over the years Plus the Sea Org keeping her tamped down as we know they did in 2005-2007 (the last two times the public saw her) keeping her in a mental state where she thinks that she deserves to be where she is and doesn't bother to try to escape (not that they would let her).

EDIT: From what I can glean, these dudes go hard into the Alt-Right pipeline when they know they have skeletons that may come out as the Alt-Right will defend ANYONE on their side from ANYTHING....the comments in support of Brand on social media are...sickening.

It sounds like Noel Fielding, and David Walliams are both going to be going down too...

Fielding is a disappointment as I only know him from THE IT CROWD, but I found him genuinely funny there....but yeah he's reputedly friends with Brand and was ALSO in a 30+ year old dude in a relationship with a 16 year old girl thing.

Also, I only just found out through all this that the age of consent in the UK is INEXPLICABLY 16...WTF is wrong with you guys over there man? That's fucked up. Can you not vote to change that?

Like voting changes anything over here, QT!

I'm surprised and a little upset by Fielding, he's been a long time favourite of mine, I was a student at the right time for the Mighty Boosh to come out.

David Walliams I'm less surprised by for some reason.
