Though I don't live there, I will throw in a vote for you to go to Norway. On a cruise last year we visited and Oslo was EASILY one of our utterly favourite ports. Just a lovely city to spend time in. Lots to see and do.

If yo DO go, make sure to make the trip to the Viking Ship museum (across the bay by short ferry ride) which is amazing, but is also located on a part of the land that has lovely white houses with black marley tile roofs...just a really wonderful little community to walk through.

I have also heard nothing but great things about Iceland, though I've not been there myself. Every single person I know who has gone there has had a GREAT time.

Oslo to london can be ridiculously cheap at times (yes morgy I know I was supposed to come visit this summer, but thing changed with work ajd life and....well its complicated) but the train to manc might be so stupidily expensive that a more costly flight in to manc might still be a better option

Very true, thetrainline is looking about 80 return Euston to Picadilly on that weekend (Leaving Saturday 11th in the morning, returning Sunday 12th afternoon - it goes up to about 200 if you want to come on the Friday afternoon!) Using National Express would be a lot cheaper (though the journey would be about double the length - being from Australia, it probably wouldn't seem like such a drag though...) They are showing Friday - Sunday tickets on that weekend at about 25 return, with approx the same amount if you came up on the Saturday morning...

Centz, Grim, I'll confirm with Mrs Tiste tonight if it would be OK (don't see why it wouldn't be) and let you know. Means there is one less expense to worry about! :rtfm:

So how risky/painful is it to get a train from London to Manchester? British trains do not have a good reputation here...

I looked at flights directly from Oslo to Manchester, and they were very affordable. At least now, when it's still so early. It's only NOK 1200, if I don't mind spend 25 hours travelling -.-

Whats that in real money?

@centz
I havent had too much trouble with rail travel beyond its cost.
Booking in advance with trainline.com does mitigate the cost a little bit

Geez Grim, than is longer than my flight from Sydney to London! You can always catch a train from London with me.. best way to meet a new person right? :rtfm:

The ticket prices don't seem too bad to me, but that might be because transport isn't particularly cheap in Australia.

Its a simple equation.
How much is your time worth?
Will you miss a days work for that extra travel?
What else ciukd you di with those 20 hours, its something Ive always thought, people put too small a valur on their own time when looking for bargains and savings.
Try and save money, haggle on prices, most certainly, but always factor the cost on your own time into it.

Mrs. Dutch and I traveled a few times by British Railways last year and the year before and it wasn't bad, I actually enjoyed it way more compared to the railways here.

I can get it down to two hours, it just depends on how much I'm willing to pay  But yes, that is definitely a possibility!!
