Looks like an emergency solution :rtfm:

And I guess I have hijacked the thread. Sorry Mal.

We're not going to wipe ourselves out, there are always pockets of humanity that will bounce back into the gap. Civilizations may be wiped out, but not humans as a species. We have an unprcedented capacity to adept.

Of course if the sun decides to call it a day or if we get hit by a small moon then yeah, it's over. But total extinction will not be achieved by mankind themselves, no matter how hard they try.

The unfortunate thing is that we are on the precipice of an era where individuals and small groups can cause harm at an exponentially disproportionate level. There will be very little we can do to stop it, and it is an inevitability that some will try - and at least one will succeed.

Unprecedented access to technology and knowledge (e.g. one specifically that has extreme harm potential [and extreme benefit potential] is CRISPR [the scariest and simultaneously best part is how easy CRISPR is to do if you have an organic chemistry background]) + global reach + even one determined, intelligent individual = catastrophes on the megadeath level. And, if more than one attempt succeeds, then I think it could potentially lead to an extinction event. Just because it's unprecedented, that doesn't mean it won't happen. Humanity is unprecedented.

The main effective "solution" is Ubiquitous Law Enforcement. But, that is an inherently unstable solution (at least, when run by humans), as explored in many sci-fi books (I'm specifically thinking of Vinge's A Deepness Upon The Sky, which I've been reading, and the Qeng Ho localizers, as well as the historical events of Namqem.)

We need to be a multi-planet species and we need to be that now.

Again, I don't buy it. Any nation out for whole-scale destruction is going to be isolated and pounded upon by other nations. Any group of individuals out to cause large-scale mayhem will want to preserve themselves and therefore make sure that at least some people survive. And finally the suicidal nutcases are usually isolated incidents or loners in which case they lack the scale and impact for wholesale destruction, or it is organisations like ISIS who get fanatics to blow themselves up but the people behind it want to live to see a new world and they need people for that. Nuclear bombs will leave survivors, deadly viruses will leave survivors. Nobody is going to willfully destroy a planet that they themselves are on or if they do they lack the followers to achieve a global impact. 100% termination of the species is simply not realistic. The only way to manage that is through a cataclysmic event (big rock from outer space or sun collapse) or accidental termination such as destroying the ozone layer. And even in the latter event you'll probably have some underground survivors. Or some sort of sterility virus, but again with the current state of human medicine we may even be able to find a solution to that.

Yesterday, upon the stair, I saw a man who wasn't there. He wasn't there again today. Oh, how I wish he'd go away.

A sub..aka.. Meatball sub.. Is not a sandwich as it is not made up of two distinct slices.

A meatball sub is a meatball submarine sandwich. Therefore, bread does not need to be in two pieces to surround the filler.

What the hell kinda of meatball subs are you guys eating...?! There's one slice on top and one slice on the bottom!

What about people who pronounce 'taco' like it rhymes with tobacco? Aren't these the people we should be building a wall to keep out?
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

I don't understand tacos. They are ridiculously difficult to eat, the shell breaks at the most inconvenient locations, and you end up with some sort of glorified nacho dish full of throat-slicing mayhem shreds.

I had tęcos for dinner yesterday.

How is this helping Mal, exactly?

I have a question for you, Mal! How the hell do I know if a guy likes me? Is there some way I can deconstruct all his messages and find some sort of proof? Also, are long-distance relationships viable?

Those aren't taco's.

These are taco's. Specifically from Rick Bayless.

Those little hard things are what people who don't know what tacos are try to pass off as taco's.

I prefer burritos to tacos. Much easier to handle.

However, my Mexican friends tell me they aren't really a thing in Mexico. Just like the Finns don't really drink a lot of Finlandia vodka (which is something I was once told by a Finnish girl).

Why do other countries create these export-based brands and encourage stereotypes of themselves that aren't true? I mean, I purchase a ton of Ukrainian honey vodka with pepper (I do like the spicy kick), but I know for a fact that it's a thing quite a few people back home drink as well, and it's not a made-up thing, but something people actually make and consume.

I can confirm that Burritos are not mexican it is a texmex thing. My mother-in-law had never heard of them until she moved here. Nachos are also texmex not mexican.

There is room in this world for both traditional Mexican tacos and crunchy Americanized tacos, which are known as gringo tacos to some.
